Boreal Forest
Boreal forests (also known as taiga forests) are located just south of the tundra and stretch across large areas of North America and Eurasia. Boreal forests are one of the world's largest biomes and encompass about 11 percent of Earth's land. Winters are long, cold, and severe in boreal forests. The landscape is dotted with patchy areas of permafrost, as well as numerous lakes, ponds, rivers, and bogs. However, the majority of the land mass is covered with evergreen forests that consist primarily of conifer (cone bearing) trees such as black and white spruces and eastern larch. Compared to the size of this biome, there are relatively few tree species represented. North American boreal forests support only about 20 species of trees. Boreal forests have a very short growing season during the warmer summer months. Little precipitation falls throughout the year, so inhabiting plants are well adapted to surviving in drought conditions. These forests are predominated by coniferous trees, which have needle-shaped leaves that have minimal surface area to prevent excessive water loss. As these needles fall from the trees, the forest floor becomes littered. As these needles decompose, they add an acidic quality to the soil, which naturally has a very low nutrient content. These two traits, along with a cold environment, short growing season, sporadic permafrost, and slow decomposition contribute to the overall low productivity of boreal forests.

As anyone can tell you, a forest without trees just isn't a forest. All forests have lots of trees, so does that mean that a forest in Russia is pretty much like a forest in Brazil? No way! Forests are different all over the world.
Two things can help you determine what kind of forest you're looking at: the climate (warm or cold) and the kinds of trees you see. Some trees are called evergreens, because they never lose their green leaves or needles. Others are deciduous, which means their colorful leaves come tumbling to the ground each fall.
Expansive deciduous forests once covered the eastern half of what is now the United States, but much of this temperate climate forest has been cut down to clear land for crops and cities. If you hike what's left of these woods in the fall, you'll see a forest in color. The oak, beech, maple, and hickory trees turn shades of red, gold, and orange before dropping their leaves. You may see white-tailed deer and maybe, if you're lucky, black bears.

VICFORESTS: MAKING SURE THERE ARE NONE
Vicforests recently removed 90 scheduled logging coupes in East Gippsland from the Timber Release Plan (aka WUP Wood Utilisation Plan) and added 137 new coupes. Therefore this year 47 new coupes have been allocated ranging from 18 hectares in size to 120 hectares in size. The coupes are classed as either Seed Tree Regeneration (this means clearfell) or a thinnings coupe. Thinnings coupes in the past have been scheduled in forest that has been previously clearfelled. They clear part of the forest to give more room to their crop (their crop being our state forest). Of these 137 new scheduled coupes however there are no thinnings coupes in previously clearfelled or regenerated forest. They are all scheduled in mature forest otherwise known as old-growth forest and forest that has been selectively logged or burnt by wild fire (in this case the 39 fires). One may ask how do you thin an old-growth forest, answer you can’t which means we are now seeing 120 hectare clearfells in East Gippsland. So maybe this is why VicForest were not too effective in informing the public about these changes.

http://www.ec.gc.ca/acidrain/acidforest.html
What does acid rain do to trees? The impact of acid rain on trees ranges from minimal to severe, depending on the region of the country and on the acidity of the rain. Acid rain, acid fog and acid vapour damage the surfaces of leaves and needles, reduce a tree's ability to withstand cold, and inhibit plant germination and reproduction. Consequently, tree vitality and regenerative capability are reduced. Acid rain also depletes supplies of important nutrients (e.g. calcium and magnesium) from soils. The loss of these nutrients is known to reduce the health and growth of trees (see below).
How else does acid rain affect forests?
Prolonged exposure to acid rain causes forest soils to lose valuable nutrients. It also increases the concentration of aluminum in the soil, which interferes with the uptake of nutrients by the trees. Lack of nutrients causes trees to grow more slowly or to stop growing altogether. More visible damage, such as defoliation, may show up later. Trees exposed to acid rain may also have more difficulty withstanding other stresses, such as drought, disease, insect pests and cold weather. The ability of forests to withstand acidification depends on the ability of the forest soils to neutralize the acids. This is determined by much the same geological conditions that affect the acidification of lakes. Consequently, the threat to forests is largest in those areas where lakes are also seriously threatened - in central Ontario, southern Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces. These areas receive about twice the level of acid rain that forests can tolerate without long-term damage. Forests in upland areas may also experience damage from acid fog that often forms at higher elevations.

1. BACKGROUND At the close of the twentieth century, there are approximately 3,500 million hectares of forests in the world, representing 27 per cent of land use. Of this total forest area, 2,000 million hectares are found in developing countries, mostly in the tropical and sub-tropical regions (FAO 1997). Although the original forest area is not known precisely, it is estimated that the world has lost approximately 40 per cent of the original forest area of 6,000 million hectares over the last 8,000 years (Bryant, 1997; Laarman and Sedjo, 1992). Most of the loss in forest area is a direct consequence of human intervention in the 20th century. There are many different types of tropical forests, ranging from the rain forests of the Amazon to the dry woodlands of Southern Africa, from the coastal mangroves of Southeast Asia to the alpine forests in the Andean highlands of South America.

The Ten Mile/Black Warrior roadless area in Boise National Forest near Lohman, Idaho, is one of dozens created by the Clinton administration.
MSNBC staff and news service reports WASHINGTON - Following through on a pledge to change Clinton-era protections on 58.5 million acres of forest, the Bush administration on Thursday announced it will let governors petition for more or fewer restrictions on logging, mining and other development there. The action, affecting forests mainly in the West, impacts the "roadless rule" that President Clinton had put in place little more than a week before leaving office in January 2001. Clinton's regulation blocked road construction as a way to prevent logging, mining and other industry activities in the backcountry. Under existing local forest management plans, some 34.3 million acres could be opened to road construction. That would be the first step in allowing logging, mining and other industry and wider recreational uses of the land. Under proposed rules, new management plans have to be written for the other 24.2 million acres before road building can commence.

More than 100 British MPs have signed a petition calling on the Australian Prime Minister to intervene to stop the clear felling of Tasmania's old growth forests. Co-ordinated by a Liberal Democrat, Norman Baker, 104 MPs from all parties have asked for protection of the Tarkine and Styx Valley, which contain some of the oldest trees on the planet. "Here in the UK we see Tasmania as one of the world's most attractive places, in particular for its wild and scenic places, enhanced by those grand forests which are yet to be properly protected," the letter, which was sent to John Howard this month, says. The MPs warned that international visitors were less likely to visit Tasmania after recent articles on the old growth forests in newspapers such as The Observer and Le Monde "We draw your attention to the fact that tens of thousands of British tourists annually spend tens of millions of dollars in Tasmania, creating Tasmanian jobs and contributing to the local economy," the letter says.

Walden Backs Key Biomass Provisions in Energy Act Benefiting Forests, Environment
Incentives for the production of power using woody biomass included in the comprehensive Energy Policy Act approved by the House
WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. House of Representatives this week approved legislation that will improve the health of our nation’s forests while encouraging the development of renewable energy using woody biomass debris found on our forest floors that could become fuel for catastrophic wildfire. Representative Greg Walden (R-OR), a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and his colleagues passed the bipartisan Energy Policy Act of 2005, which included key provisions to encourage the development of woody debris as an alternative source of energy. “The Healthy Forests Restoration Act (HFRA) is making great strides in improving the health of our national forestlands through fuels reduction efforts to prevent catastrophic wildfire,” said Walden, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Forests and Forest Health, co-author of HFRA, and vice chair of the bipartisan House Renewable Energy Caucus. “However, as it stands now, there are still millions of tons of debris found on the floors of our forestlands. This woody material, if not put to productive use, simply creates a tinderbox in our forests or is piled up in landfills. The continued coordination between the Congress and the Departments of Agriculture, Energy and the Interior in finding innovative and cost-effective ways to use biomass will help advance efforts in both hazardous fuels reduction and the development of alternative fuel sources.”
