Forests, environment and materials
Within our forest industrial research programme we concentrate mainly on pulp, paper, surface treatments and printing. However, this also includes energy technology, guidance and automatic control engineering, as well as materials technology. Among other aspects we study how paper and packaging can be treated so as to make them as strong and durable as possible. Our research contributes to creating durable packaging that not only has a good surface printing area but is recyclable. The research aims also at developing new areas of application for paper-based packaging.
Our materials science research is also in cooperation with the forest industry, but is characterized by another important industry, the steel industry. Here the focus is on how steel performs in various types of tools among other aspects.
Nature not only provides an essential base for industry but also represents an important resource both for people and the environment. In our environmental research we examine the human affects on the ecosystem as well as the technical, the social scientific and natural technological aspects of the role of forests in an ecologically sustainable society.

Source: National Union of Public and General Employees (BCGEU)
Vancouver - B.C.'s forests and environment are at risk because of massive cutbacks in staff and resources by the provincial government, says the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union.
A BCGEU survey, released June 15, concludes that the men and women responsible for provincial forests can no longer manage and protect them adequately. The potential of revenue loss to the province is also higher than it was five years ago, the survey found.
"Our forests are the lifeblood of many communities, and the backbone of B.C.'s economy. And yet opposition parties, and the large corporations that harvest our forests, are continually demanding more government spending cuts," said BCGEU President George Heyman.
"The cuts we have seen to date are a threat to the public interest - to our environment, to the health of our working forests, and to the future strength of our economy. Our survey of BCGEU members who work in the Ministry of Forests reveals some deeply troubling information about the government's inability to protect and manage our province's most vital natural resource."
Since 1996, front-line staff in the Ministry of Forests has been cut by 10% and the overall ministry budget has been slashed by 30%. Cumulative budget cuts to the forests and environment ministries total more than $1 billion.

Multidisciplinary approach to study of relationships between the environment and humans, from an ecological perspective; scope and direction of human impact on biosphere, exemplified by population, agricultural practices and pollution. ENVI 121. POLLUTION: NATURAL AND UNNATURAL Did you know that pollution has natural and unnatural (anthropogenic) sources? Because pollution doesn't respect political or geographical boundaries, how do practices and policies in developed countries affect the Third World and vice versa? How much of the global warming and acid rain problem is natural in origin? Why are anthropogenic compounds such as CFCs, DDT and PCBs such a concern? How do natural events such as volcanic eruptions, forest fires and dust storms pollute large portions of the world? Who is responsible for the pollution found in the world's oceans and ice sheets? Students discover the answers to these and related questions by learning how to integrate science and policy perspectives on a global scale.

Welcome The Coalition to Save the Elms is a non-profit charitable community based conservation organization. The Coalition was founded in 1992, in response to the heightened threat to Winnipeg's extraordinary American elm population by Dutch elm disease. As the internal and external forces have changed over the years, the organization has updated its strategy to stress the inclusion of all tree species in Winnipeg's urban forest. Winnipeg is renowned around the world for its exceptional urban forest which is composed of the largest American elm population in North America. The Coalition to Save the Elms has played a vital role in ensuring the continued survival of our precious urban tree population. The vision of the Coalition to Save the Elms is to protect, preserve and promote the health of the urban forest and the urban environment through public awareness and education.

Forests
Forests cover about a third of the Earth's surface and support much of the world's biodiversity. It is estimated that about half of the world's species are found in forested areas, particularly in species-rich tropical forests. Forests also provide critical ecosystem services by replenishing oxygen in the atmosphere, reducing erosion, retaining moisture in the soil, and storing carbon. In addition, forests are one of the world's most important renewable natural resources, supplying timber products for fuel, building materials, paper, and other consumer goods, in addition to non-wood forest products , including fruit, cocoa, coconut, rubber, and coffee. There is also increasing awareness of the economic value of forests for recreation and tourism. According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) , about 56 percent of the world's forests are classified as tropical or subtropical and 44 percent are temperate or boreal. Twenty-seven percent of global forest resources are found in Europe, 25 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean, 19 percent in Asia and the Pacific, 17 percent in Africa, and 12 percent in North America. Historically, large expanses of forestland in Western Europe and eastern North America were cleared for agriculture and for fuelwood and building materials. In the 17th century Britain looked to the richly forested New World as an important source of timber for shipmasts, because its own forests had been depleted. As the U.S. population grew, demand for forest products increased and by the mid-1800s most of the indigenous forest along the Eastern seaboard was cleared. As settlers moved west, mid-western forests were rapidly converted for lumber for housing, fencing, and railroad construction. Forest conversion in the U.S. peaked in the 1920s; demand for lumber was reduced because, among other things, coal and other fuels replaced wood for heating and energy, and steel and other materials were increasingly used for construction (see

Mother Nature mending Florida's fire-ravaged forests
July 9, 1998
Web posted at: 2:36 p.m. EDT (1836 GMT) VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida (CNN) Wildfires have charred hundreds of thousands of acres across Florida since late May, and some of the fires are still burning. RELATED VIDEO
Netshow It could take months, or even years to rebuild fire-damaged structures. It could also take years to rejuvenate the blackened lands. While Florida's residents and officials are still assessing the fire damage, Mother Nature already has started healing the forests. Check out Correspondent Brian Cabell's report.
