forest, Environmental Studies
Related Category: Environmental Studies The chief economic product of forests is timber, but the economic benefits, in terms of climate control, pollution abatement, and wildlife maintenance, have rarely been calculated. The economic importance of nontimber forest products is also increasing. The forest is also vital as a watershed . Because of the thick humus layer, loose soil, and soil-retaining powers of the trees' long roots, forests are vitally important for preserving adequate water supplies. Almost all water ultimately feeds from forest rivers and lakes and from forest-derived water tables. In addition, the forest provides shelter for wildlife, recreation and aesthetic renewal for people, and irreplaceable supplies of oxygen and soil nutrients. Deforestation, particularly in the tropical rain forests, has become a major environmental concern, as it can destabilize the earth's tempeature, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels. Efforts to control deforestation, including those at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development , remain ineffective.

Cutbacks putting B.C. forests, environment at risk
Vancouver - B.C.'s forests and environment are at risk because of massive cutbacks in staff and resources by the provincial government, says the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union.
A BCGEU survey, released June 15, concludes that the men and women responsible for provincial forests can no longer manage and protect them adequately. The potential of revenue loss to the province is also higher than it was five years ago, the survey found.
"Our forests are the lifeblood of many communities, and the backbone of B.C.'s economy. And yet opposition parties, and the large corporations that harvest our forests, are continually demanding more government spending cuts," said BCGEU President George Heyman.
"The cuts we have seen to date are a threat to the public interest - to our environment, to the health of our working forests, and to the future strength of our economy. Our survey of BCGEU members who work in the Ministry of Forests reveals some deeply troubling information about the government's inability to protect and manage our province's most vital natural resource."
Since 1996, front-line staff in the Ministry of Forests has been cut by 10% and the overall ministry budget has been slashed by 30%. Cumulative budget cuts to the forests and environment ministries total more than $1 billion.

Polis'kyi Reserve (#5 on the map) is located in Zhytomyr region of Ukraine on the border with Byelorussia. It was organized in 1968 for the protection and research of forest-swamp ecosystems of Ukrainian Poles'e. The reserve is subordinated to the State Forestry Committee. Protected area of 20104 hectares lies in the upper Ubort' river territories. Pine stands dominate the landscape of the reserve. Pine stands of more 100 years old cover the area of 2000 hectares. Swamps are important element of this reserve. The total area of swamps is around 5 thousand hectares, that is 22% of the total area of the reserve. Polis'kyi Reserve plays an important role in forecasting changes caused by land amelioration program conducted in 60-70's. The reserve protects 20 plant and 14 animal species listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.

Welcome to the ODI Forest Policy and Environment Programme (FPEP). FPEP seeks to inform the processes of policy change in tropical forestry in ways which improve the livelihoods and well-being of the forest-dependent poor, whilst also securing the long-term future of forest resources. We do this by:
  • conducting independent policy-orientated research on forestry issues; providing policy and institutional advice to international and national donors, governments, parliamentarians and civil society groups; contributing to strategic global, regional and national learning through workshops, information exchange and dissemination activities.
Current research centres on:
Environmental governance

Forestry provides an important entry point for governance initiatives. The very factors that make forestry such a challenging sector also mean that it offers valuable ways of understanding governance, governance failures, and assessing the impacts of public policies on the poor and the environment. Free trade is one thing. Free trade at the expense of nearly all
national environmental regulation is another. The World Trade

The industrial forest trade is anything but "free"; as the Earth, indigenous peoples, and the world's populace in general bears the price of failing ecosystems. Bhimgad awaits justice
Illegal felling, mining, and conversion of forest land into non-forest uses, have all been unchecked here. Repeated hearings in the Supreme Court were ignored by forest officials. Kanchi Kohli reports that the case presents both new opportunities for holistic conservation as well as risk of the Court's orders being flouted brazenly.
18 February 2005 - In December 2004, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Karnataka, issued show-cause notices (asking those who receive them to explain why they should not be disciplined or prosecuted) to forest officers - right from the Range Forest Officers, Assistant Conservator of Forests to the Deputy Conservator of Forests and Conservator of Forests of Belgaum Circle. Forest Health Land Use Management Back to Main... ... Forest Health In the boreal forest, there are many factors that affect the dynamic nature of the forest ecosystem through creating disturbances. These include insects, fungi, microorganisms, and some plants and animals, both native and non-native species. Saskatchewan Environment carefully monitors and, when appropriate, manages these, always with the objective of maintaining the long term health of the forest. Forest Land Use Planning How we all see forest lands varies considerably. We see it: as a place to hunt, hike and fish; as an essential ecosystem for our healthy environment; as a precious habitat requiring protection; or as timber resources, mineral resources, fuel, manufacturing, and exports. All of these are important visions of the forest that can be part of a land use plan. Forest Management Saskatchewan, a prairie province, is more than 50 percent forests. Management of the forest addresses how we maintain or enhance the health and integrity of these ecosystems including The Forest Resources Management Act and other legislative processes.

The widening rift in the conservationist movement has allowed the bigger and more powerful forest encroachers to hide behind the controversy over tribal lands and sharing of forest resources.
