From an ecological perspective, the definition of a forest includes all these things, from the trees to the bacteria, and the soil type to the microclimates. See the " Tree Basics " page for more about the definition of a forest. Forest management systems are rooted in forest ecology (pun intended!). There are three groups of concepts with forest ecology, or the ecology of just about any natural system. Each of the three groups of concepts interact with other to variable degrees, at variable times, and in variable ways.
  • Composition : These are the pieces of the puzzle. Structure : This is how the pieces are arranged. Function : This is what each piece does and the interactions among the pieces.

THE FISHER MUSEUM AT HARVARD FOREST I n 1907, Harvard acquired 2 000 of its 3 000 acres of forest in Petersham, Massachusetts (65 miles west of Cambridge) to serve as an outdoor classroom, a laboratory, and a demonstration site for field experiments. In the 1930s, Richard T. Fisher, the first director of the Harvard Forest, was able to commission, through the generosity of Ernest Stillman, a series of 23 dioramas depicting the history of central New England Forests, their management and ecology. These models, made by the studio of Guernsey and Pitman in Cambridge, form the core of the Fisher Museum (dedicated in 1941), and represent an internationally renowned educational and artistic achievement. Additional exhibits relate to the forest history, ecology, and ongoing research. T he Harvard Forest was named a National Science Foundation Long-Term Ecological Research site in 1988. Subsequently, it became the northeastern field site for the National Institute for Global Environmental Change.

What Programs Does Ferry Beach Provide?
Ferry Beach Ecology School (FBES) is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to providing ecological education to 3rd-8th grade classes. Our interdisciplinary ecology curriculum focuses on teaching hands-on lessons in basic ecology by using the outdoors as a classroom a classroom where learning occurs through exploration, scientific investigation, discovery and sensory awareness. FBES naturalists take students to a variety of ecosystems residential programs , as well as day programs and outreach programs to public and private schools. Why Do Classes Come to Ferry Beach? A trip to FBES can be a once in a lifetime opportunity for students to explore and learn about ecosystems such as tidepools, beaches, dunes, salt marshes and coastal forests- places that many of them may never have seen before. The experience of being away from home and learning to live with and get along with others is also invaluable. School teachers from all over New England use this experience as an integral part of their science curriculum. Pre-visit and post-visit activity manuals as well as free teacher training during your visit to Ferry Beach Ecology School help to ensure that the week can be incorporated into the regular school year.
On lessons , students learn to use disciplines such as oceanography, geology, biology, chemistry, climatology and history as tools for understanding ecosystems, organisms, and ultimately, their relationship to the world they live in. . Vi erbjuder utbildningsprogram i biologi, geovetenskap, miljö- och hälsoskydd samt ett stort antal fristående kurser för över 800 heltidsstudenter. För de studenter som saknar behörighet till naturvetenskapliga och tekniska studier finns möjlighet att läsa på ett ettårigt tekniskt/naturvetenskapligt basår. Vi bedriver forskarutbildning inom ämnena ekologi, miljövetenskap, naturgeografi och systematik. Vi har omkring 50 doktorander och utexaminerar ungefär 10 doktorer varje år. Vi forskar om såväl nordliga ekosystem som frågeställningar av global betydelse. Den handlar t. ex. om växter och djur på landhöjningsstränder, dynamiken hos fisksamhällen i sjöar, rinnande vattens betydelse för växter och djur, dynamiken hos sorkar och lämlar och systematik hos svampar och lavar. Ancient Forest Ecology

Ancient Forest is forest that has never been managed, or signifigantly changed by humans, and it is increasingly rare and precious. But quite apart from its beauty or spiritual value, untouched forest gives us insights into how natural forests work. When we manage forests we can never fully understand, or anticipate, the outcome unless we can compare it to natural forest. Natural forests also give us insight into how global changes in climate, air pollution, diseases, and other wide-ranging changes are affecting our forests. Ancient forests are a valuable asset that have often recieved surprisingly little study, and are fast being lost.
Ancient Forest and Old Growth
The most studied kind of ancient forest is called "old-growth forest". Old-growth forests differ from younger forests in three main ways. First, they have trees that are much older than the average age for the tree species. Second, they generally have greater numbers of snags, or dead standing trees, than younger forests. And third, they have a large number of logs on the forest floor compared to younger forests. In some old-growth forest ecosystems, there are numerous logs across streams which tend to form debris dams that are less common in younger forests.

Ponderosa Pine Fire Ecology

The ponderosa pine forests of the Colorado Plateau have evolved over thousands of years. Over this time the tree has developed several adaptations which help it survive in its dry, often warm habitat. A once common occurrence in these forests which has shaped the pine's particular ecological adaptations is wildfire . Recent studies indicate that the ponderosa pine forests on the southern plateau near Flagstaff, Arizona and along the Mogollon Rim were subjected to low-intensity ground fires perhaps every 2-12 years over historical time. However, beginning in the early 1900s this pattern of fire drastically changed. A fire suppression policy implemented by the United States Forest Service and other land management agencies at this time greatly decreased the occurrence of fire in these forests. Tourism and Recreation in our Forests
Nature-based tourism world-wide is growing rapidly. It is destined to become a major contributor to Western Australia's economy, and the forests of the South West will play a significant part. They are already among WA's most popular attractions, with more than three million visits each year. But for the tourism industry to thrive, it must be based on sustainable development and use of our natural advantages. The ultimate success of nature-based tourism depends on the conservation of our amazing array of native plants, animals and landscapes. Western Australia's forests are looked after to ensure that our natural attractions are sustainably managed and that appropriate facilities are provided for visitors including camping areas, picnic sites, walk trails, roads and information centres. The Department of Conservation and Land Management's budget for recreation and visitor service projects in forest regions is extensive and includes projects such as the Treetop Walk and Ancient Empire interpretive trail in the Valley of the Giants near Walpole, the Great Forest Trees Drive in Shannon National Park, and the Three Trees Climb encompassing the Gloucester, Diamond and Bicentennial Lookout Trees.

Forest ecology - much more than trees
When we think of forests, we often think only of the trees that grow there. And while many tree species are impressive - such as the 82m (274 ft) California Sequoia that is the earth's largest living thing or Methuselah, a California Bristlecone Pine that dates almost 4,770 years - trees represent only a tiny percentage of life in the forests. Part of what makes forests so amazing are the complex relationships between flora and fauna - like the incredible salmon forest story.
Forest friends
Critters like insects, slugs, voles, and shrews are perhaps not as majestic as ancient trees, but they are as important to the health and longevity of a forest. Mosses and lichens are also essential elements of a forest, and if any of these pieces of the puzzle go missing, the entire forest can be critically impaired, especially in the long- term. These often-considered lesser species can have the same function as a canary in a coal mine, warning us when human activities are undermining the forest ecosystem. And in order to protect valuable species - like spotted owls or marbled murrelets - we must protect their forest habitat. The lowly mushroom is an excellent example of how a visually small part of the forest is actually a significant element of the forest ecology.

Murray et al of the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. With fewer than 20 similar sites in the world, these unique ecosystems offer special opportunities for students to learn about the interrelationships between geology, hydrology, soils, plant communities, wildlife habitats and disturbance factors. The shallow, nutrient- and moisture-deficient soil (classified as a dysic lithic borofolist soil) contributes to the fire-prone environment. The dominant tree species in the barrens is the stress-tolerant and fire-dependent jack pine and here it is growing near the southern extent of its natural range. Understory plants are mostly ericaceous shrubs such as blueberry, huckleberry and sheep laurel. Many wildlife species utilize both the barrens and the adjacent hardwood forests to meet their life requirements.
