The Alberta Centre for Boreal Studies About Us Fact Sheets Reports What's New The Alberta Centre for Boreal Studies was initiated by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (Edmonton Chapter) for the purpose of providing reliable up-to-date information to the public about the ecology and management of boreal forests in western Canada. The information in this site may be freely copied and distributed, though we ask that acknowledgment be given to the Centre. New Book!
Alternative Futures: Alberta's Boreal Forest at the Crossroads
Alternative Futures is a citizen's guide to the issues facing Alberta's northern forest. Dr. Schneider reviews the history and current state of the forestry and petroleum industries, and describes the ecological impacts these industries are having on the forest. Considerable space is dedicated to the description of new approaches to forest management, based on maintaining natural patterns and processes. The Otorongo Holistic Ecology Centre, situated in Moyobamba, is an independant organization working with principles of deep Ecology in the defence and conservation of the Amazonian Forests. We are a 'not for profit' organization dedicated to the preservation of the incredible biodiversity of the Amazonian Forest, including the habitat of the great Jaguar (panther onca) known locally as the Otorongo. Our vision and mission are to work inspiring in the local population the respect for the Forest and thus the appropriate and sustainable use of the natural resources. The Centre, founded by Huayqui Ocean, Visionary, Musician and Ecologist, proposes a life style where we are fully linked in coexistence with the organic elements of Nature, so that from there we may be led to a revaluation of all that surrounds us. For we are interdependent; linked with all that exists in natural form. Understanding this we live in a more harmonious way. Our thoughts and feelings are connected with the treatment that our local and planetary habitat receives. For that reason our main objective is the creation of Eco-Communities, model societies with Holistic principles, integrating ancestral knowledge and ecological technologies. These are tools which will give us impulse and encouragement to find solutions to local and global problems.

New England Forest Ecology
Carbon, in the form of carbon dioxide (CO ), is an important greenhouse gas released to the atmosphere through both natural and human activity. The concentration of CO in the atmosphere has increased since the start of the industrial revolution, and a continued release of greenhouse gases threatens to disrupt global climatic patterns. Forests are an important component of the global carbon cycle. Each year they withdraw carbon from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and release it to the atmosphere through both plant and microbial respiration (Fig. 1). The processes of photosynthesis and respiration are strongly affected by climatic conditions, particularily temperature and precipitation. With a changing global climate, the role forests play in the uptake and release of carbon could be altered. Figure 1: The terrestrial carbon cycle In order to gain a better understanding of how forests are involved in the cycling of carbon, we have been participating in collaborative studies examining forest respiration and photosynthesis at two New England study sites: one in Howland, Maine, and one at Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts (Fig. 2). Our research effort focuses on several aspects of the forest carbon cycle, including how temperature and moisture affect the release of carbon through soil and dead-wood respiration, how standing forest biomass contributes to carbon storage, and the development of models to predict how forest carbon storage is affected by variation in temperature and precipitation. More recently, new projects at Howland Forest are investigating how disturbance (nitrogen deposition and management) alters the carbon budget of this forest.
