Background
The Roundtable on Sustainable Forests is an open and inclusive process committed to the goal of sustainable forest management (SFM) on public and private lands in the United States. Roundtable participants include public and private organizations and individuals committed to better decision-making through shared learning and increased understanding. The Roundtable's primary activity to date has been the implementation of an internationally agreed upon set of criteria and indicators for the purpose of developing a shared understanding of current forest conditions and a baseline against which to mark future progress toward sustainability. To this end, the Roundtable has focused much of its attention on identifying and evaluating the quality of data that can be used to assess the state of the nation's forests and providing input on the production of the National Report on Sustainable Forests 2003 . In doing so, the Roundtable has stimulated a national discussion of SFM and has served as the catalyst for more collaborative data management relationships among several federal agencies.

SFM - Sustainable Forest Management Network

The Sustainable Forest Management Network is a Canada-wide partnership that works to bring the research and teaching capacity of universities together with the knowledge, expertise, and research needs of forestry companies, provincial and federal government departments, First Nations groups, and non-governmental organizations. Its objective is to play a key role, together with its partners, in ensuring that environmentally and socially sustainable forest management methods are being used while income, employment opportunities, and exports are maintained. While there are many other forest research organizations in Canada, the Network's partnership approach, along with its goal of integrating the ecological, social, and economic dimensions of the country's forest sector, is unique. The Network's goal is twofold: generating new knowledge and, through research, finding answers to management questions that affect all the partners. Recognizing that knowledge is of little value if it is not shared, the Network is beginning to publish a series of papers that synthesize the 300 research reports into 16 topic areas. These documents will be condensed into shorter technical notes to help forest managers better understand the underlying research of the decisions they have to make on a daily basis. In partnership with the NRC Research Press, the Network has also published a book that summarizes its seven years of ecological, economic, and social research.

Over the years, forest-related interests, benefits and values have evolved and expanded. As a result, new knowledge and technologies, responsibilities and partnerships have emerged that constantly increase our understanding of Canada’s forest and how we, as citizens of a forest nation, relate to it. To keep pace with this change, we continue to deepen our knowledge about the forest. Today, everyone in the Canadian forest community has a role to play in ensuring our forest heritage. This community has grown to include governments, Aboriginal Peoples (Indian, Inuit, Métis), the timberbased industry, non-timber forest product organizations, academia, research institutes, the recreation and tourism industry, forest practitioners, private woodlot owners, environmentalists and an increasing number of women and youth in these groups. With increasing knowledge, even more organizations and individuals are participating in forest-related decisions. Forest management has become more challenging as forest managers attempt to balance many different concerns, policies and practices. For example, forestrelated objectives and commitments now encompass matters such as the conservation of biological diversity, Aboriginal Peoples’ rights, rural community well-being, employment, private land ownership, international trade and environmental protection. As well, newly discovered uses for non-timber products, such as medicinal plants and bio-plastics from forest products, have been added to the traditional, industrial uses of the forest.
