NCSSF's Findings Report The National Commission on Science for Sustainable Forestry has completed approximately half of its initial five-year program to advance the science and practice of biodiversity conservation and forest sustainability. This report presents the Commission's first findings, based on results of NCSSF-funded projects and Commission deliberations to date. VIEW THE REPORT NCSSF Global Markets Forum Report The globalization of the world's forest industries has begun to raise questions about the competitiveness of the U.S. timber industry in the face of lower production costs from oversees competition. On February 15-16, 2005, NCSSF brought together a small group of leaders from conservation groups, industry, government, and academia to examine the potential impacts of shifting markets on U.S. forest biodiversity.

Sustainable Forestry
Since the late 1980s, questions about the sustainable management of the world's forests have led to the development of a number of forest certification systems. The goal of forest certification systems is to develop standards that ensure that forests are being managed with an eye toward protecting all the values that forests provide to society. Concerns such as sustainable harvest rates, the protection of water quality, and the continuation of appropriate levels of biodiversity, among others, are all factors in forest certification systems. Take a big step toward a career in forestry
Junior Forest Rangers (JFR), now in its 38th year, is a work/education summer program. High-school students aged 16-18 can learn about environmentally sound forest management techniques and career options. A balance of work, field tours and presentations helps participants understand how the government and forest industry face the complex challenges of forest resource management. A crew may be located anywhere in Alberta and work on various projects from tree planting and trail building, to fire-hazard reduction. Crewmembers receive training in equipment use and maintenance including chainsaws. They participate in field tours and presentations while learning directly from practicing foresters. Crewmembers are paid $30 per day (Monday through Friday), regardless of whether on a work or educational day. Meals, transportation and tent accommodation are provided free-of-charge. Students seeking credit for their JFR experience are encouraged to make arrangements with their schools prior to the program. Before applying, recognize that the rewards of the program are accompanied by challenges:

97. ETHZ - Polyproject PRIMALP - Sustainable Primary Production In The Alpine Region
An interdisciplinary ETHZ research project on sustainable agriculture and forestry in the Alpine region. Read project presentation, abstracts, and biography.
http://www.primalp.ethz.ch/
Our Mission Polyproject PRIMALP — Sustainable Primary Production in the Alpine Region The quickly changing ecological, economic, social, and political environments confront society and science with new challenges to solve existing and newly emerging conflicts which impede both a sustainable land use, and sustainable agriculture and forestry in the Alpine region. A broad interdisciplinary co-operation is required to develop improved technical, organizational and political concepts and solutions for sustainable future primary production. These principles are pursued within the scope of the Polyproject 'PRIMALP — Sustainable Primary Production in the Alpine Region'. The project has two main objectives:
  • Identification and development of sustainable agricultural and forestry production systems for the Alpine region ('best practices' projects); Development of tools and models for the analysis and evaluation of infrastructure requirements and policy decision-making ('best policies' projects).
Specific research topics are dealt with as individual projects . The results of the individual projects are integrated into a ' Core Project '. Within the scope of the Core Project, an ecological-economic model is built. It serves as a tool for the evaluation of alternative production systems and as a means for the development and communication of consistent concepts for a resource-efficient and sustainable agriculture and forestry in mountain regions.

International concerns about sustainable development were given expression through the 'Earth Summit' in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and were debated again at the WSSD held in Johannesburg in 2002.
