Forestry Sustainable Development Projects in China With investment totaling 1.9 billion yuan (US$230 million), a “Forestry Sustainable Development Project” has officially kicked off in China according to a recent announcement made by the State Forestry Administration. The project is another major forestry construction scheme to be carried out in China, following three others – the National Afforestation Project, the Forestry Resources Development and Protection Project, and Forestry Development in Poverty-stricken Area. The Forestry Sustainable Development Project includes donations of 16.9 million euros (US$16.78 million) from the European Union (EU), US$16 million from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and a US$93.9 million loan from the World Bank (WB). The project involves three major parts. The first regards the management of 210,000 hectares of natural forests in Hainan Province and is funded by EU. The second part is concerned with natural protection and management of 13 reserves covering 1.16 million hectares and will be funded by the GEF. The third part will involve the planting of artificial forests, and will use money loaned from the WB to support 250,000 hectares in 110 counties from 11 different provinces including Hebei, Shanxi and Liaoning.

Sustainability research and education efforts at Clemson University span all areas of agriculture and forestry. Sustainable agriculture must be ecologically sound, economically viable, and socially responsible. In addition, there are specific considerations for fruits and vegetables to receive "organically grown" certification.. Sustainable forestry refers to an overall commitment to environmental conservation that integrates the production of trees for useful products with reforestation and conservation of soil, air, and water quality, wildlife and fish habitat, and aesthetics. Work in both agriculture and forestry is being carried out at various locations across South Carolina. A demonstration plot at the Calhoun Field Laboratory has been developed to test various niche crops , including organic produce, cut flowers, and medicinal herbs. A farmer’s market was established on the main campus to sell the fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and cut flowers. Future plans include adding free-range chickens to produce drug-free broilers and laying hens.

Sustainable Forest Management Permits
Sustainable forest management permits provide for harvesting and milling capped volumes of timber, and last for 10 years. A permit application generally will not require as much detail as a sustainable forest management plan, but there are a number of features common to both, including the principle of management for long-term forest sustainability. PREPARING PERMIT APPLICATIONS The Ministry of Forestry has permit application forms, which describe the minimum amount of detail required, including maps. The title of the map and map series should be listed, eg, "Q21 Hawera NZ Map 260 Series". The Ministry of Forestry recommends that applicants seek help from forestry professionals experienced in forest appraisal and indigenous forest management, particularly when an inventory is needed to confirm the proposed harvest level allowed under a permit.

Sustainable Forest Products Global Alliance (SFPGA)
The Sustainable Forest Products Global Alliance is a public/private partnership that seeks to make markets work for forests and people. Together, the partners in the Global Alliance work to advance a new model for forest conservation and community development in USAID-client countries in which sustainable forest management is rewarded in the global marketplace. By reducing trade in illegally harvested or unsustainably managed forest products, opportunities for resource-dependent communities and low-income producers will grow. USAID Administrator, Andrew Natsios (center) signs an
agreement with WWF and Metafore, launching the Sustainable
Forest Products Global Alliance. Initiated by USAID along with Metafore, and World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Global Alliance includes corporate and governmental partners such as The Home Depot and the USDA Forest Service. Global Alliance partners work together to increase the demand for responsibly harvested forest products by buyers in developed countries, and to increase supply of these forest products from producers in developing countries by:

Making responsible forestry work for private landowners
In the United States there are over 9.9 million forest owners and 93 percent of them hold less than 100 acres of forest. There is increasing interest by private forest owners to protect their forests from over harvesting and mismanagement.
