Sustainable development underpins our mission as founded in conservation law and expressed through the State and Private Forestry, National Forest System, Research and Development, and International programs. The Forest Service is part of a much larger global effort to foster sustainable resource management and development. Our domestic interest includes all of the nation's forests, not just National Forests and Grasslands. Continue article Advertisement
Clearly success depends on making connections across disciplines, interests, boundaries, and landscapes. The challenge is to agree on a common vision for sustainable development and implement it in ways that make sense in different places at different scales and on different lands.

ABSTRACT As defined here, sustainable forestry ensures each ecosystem provides its fair share of values, neither overly depriving itself or other times and places of the ability to provide values. This "working" definition builds on other efforts to examine sustainability and uses the Montreal Process criteria as values to be sustained. It is first important to ensure that each "potential forest ecosystem" contains enough "intact forests" to provide the values, followed by ensuring each forest provides the values through a combination of reserves and active management. Economic development, less-consumptive lifestyles, a better rural infrastructure, more wood product use, and other factors can be helpful at the proper times and places.

Sustainable Forests Speech
October 18, 2001
Oregon State University
Good morning.
It is a pleasure to be here today with people who are on the cutting edge of the discussion about sustainable forests. I commend the Board of Forestry and the Department of Forestry for their leadership in this area.
Today I want to give you my own personal vision about sustainable forests to help facilitate this discussion. But first, what do we mean by "sustainable?"
I define sustainability as managing the use, development and protection of our environmental, social, and economic resources in a way and at a rate that enables people to meet their current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. What is important to understand about this definition is that it requires that we recognize the interdependence between our environmental, economic and community needs - that we find a balance between these often-competing values.
Imagine, if you will, three overlapping circles - one representing our economic needs, one representing our environmental needs and one representing our social or community needs. The area where the three circles overlap is the area of sustainability - the area through which run all the elements of a good quality of life: a healthy, functioning natural environment; a strong economy with jobs and job security; and safe, secure communities where people have a sense of belonging and purpose and a commitment to each other. These elements - these threads, which together weave the fabric of sustainability - are things we hold in common. They represent a common set of desires and aspirations that add value and quality to our lives.

Abstract
"Commercial forestry is an important industry in South Africa, generating considerable employment and foreign exchange. The industry has grown rapidly after the World War II with active government support. However, since the beginning of the transition to democracy in 1991, there have been increasingly vociferous attacks on the industry regarding its urban and big business bias and its role in damaging the environment. The transition to democracy has brought a change in the structure or make-up of its stakeholders which have diverse expectations from the industry. At the same time, the sustainability of the industry is a major concern for policymakers and has to be dealt with in conjunction with concerns from its stakeholders and society at large. This study points out a need for new institutional or policy reforms and suggests a set of policy guidelines that might defuse the tension in the industry and set it on a sustainable path." Assistant Director- and head of the FAO Forestry Department The keynote opening speech at the first technical session of the Eleventh World Forestry Congress, 14 October 1997, Antalya, Turkey. It is my privilege to open the technical portion of this Eleventh World Forestry Congress. In so doing, let me express my appreciation for the excellent arrangements made by the Turkish Government and particularly the Ministry of Forestry. Our hosts have worked extremely hard to prepare the ground for us. In addition, many others have contributed to the voluminous documentation of the Congress. Our task is to take these ideas and discuss. debate and develop them over the next eight days, using the best knowledge from around the globe to arrive at a declaration and set of ideas that will carry world forestry into the twenty-first century, stronger, more secure and more able to meet the challenges before it. The theme of this Congress is "Forestry for sustainable development: towards the twenty-first century". Thus, this Congress is about the role of forests and trees in contributing to overall sustainable development. It is about trees in forests, but also about the multitude of other plants and animals that inhabit forests, and about the soil, water and air. This Congress is also about trees

Mr. Piare Lal India In behalf of my colleagues, we would like to complement the host organizations. The DENR for the wonderful arrangements for this conference and also for the freedom of suggestions wherein everyone had been given the opportunity to participate and to convey his viewpoints. Indeed, this has been a great learning and knowledge sharing experience that has enhanced everyone's knowledge. I would also like to take this opportunity to say thanks to the session chairs, Mr. Ramon Paje, Mr. Al Rashid Ishmael, Dr. Efransjah, Mr. Tolentino and Mr. Jim Carle. Although, we had been here just for three days, I'm sure all of us will be carrying very happy memories of this visit to the Philippines. Many of us might not have the opportunity to really see the country but this workshop by itself will make this visit always memorable. I'm sure the recommendations which had been drafted by the delegates and coordinators are worthy subjects of follow up actions by governments and policy makers. Finally, I must thank all of you once again. To those ladies and gentlemen who had work behind the scene especially Mayumi, our friend here who has been helping in the presentations, and all of the colleagues who supported her as well as the other organizations, our heartfelt gratitude and sincere thanks. Thank you very much.

Sustainable forestry in Bolivia: Beyond planned logging
Journal of Forestry , Mar 2003 by Fredericksen, Todd S Putz, Francis E Pattie, Preston Pariona, William ... Pena-Claros, Marielos ABSTRACT Forestry in lowland Bolivia has taken great strides in the past few years, progressingfrom a virtual absence of management to a system of regulated management planning. Nearly 1 million hectares of natural forests are now certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. To ensure sustainable forest management, however, Bolivian foresters need to go beyond the basics of planned logging and apply silvicultural treatments to secure regeneration, improve tree growth, and maintain stand quality. This change is a tall order in a developing country battered by a deep economic recession, where timber-mining interests are still powerful and silviculturists are in short supply.
