In August 2002, President Bush unveiled the "Healthy Forests Initiative," a legislative plan to reduce risks posed by wildfires. Environmental groups say the plan is healthiest, not for the forests and communities affected by wildfires, but for the timber companies that would be permitted to thin the forests. Some criticisms leveled against the "Health Forests" plan:
  • The plan does not put enough emphasis on protecting residents from immediate risks.
  • Increased logging called for in the plan could actually worsen the problem of forest fires.
  • The plan could limit public input into Forest Service decisions.
  • The plan could limit use of the courts to challenge the legitimacy of fuel reduction projects.
The Bush administration makes a case for its plan on a website at WhiteHouse.gov . The proposed legislation, says the website, "will grant the federal government additional tools to address the problem of unnatural fuel buildup in our forests." Forest thinning projects needed to reduce fuel buildup are "too often hindered by unnecessary procedural delays and litigation," according to a Bush press release . The Bush plan proposes to reduce such hindrances.

Sam.Hodder@tpl.org Maine Forest Conservation Project Gets Big Boost From Congress Washington, D.C. –- The Trust for Public Land (TPL), a national conservation organization, and the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), the nation’s oldest conservation and recreation organization, today praised the U.S. Congress for providing $4.5 million in USDA Forest Legacy funding for the Katahdin Iron Works (KIW) Project in central Maine. The project has received strong support from U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and U.S. Representative Michael Michaud, who were instrumental in securing this funding as part of the Fiscal Year 2006 Interior Appropriations bill that will now go before the President for his signature. Federal funding is critical to ensuring the success of the Katahdin Iron Works Project and protection of Maine’s forest resources as part of broader conservation efforts. The 37,000-acre KIW property serves as the centerpiece of AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative, a land conservation effort that integrates habitat protection, recreation, education, and sustainable forestry in the 100-Mile Wilderness region of Maine, which stretches from the town of Monson north to Mt. Katahdin along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The primary goals of the Katahdin Iron Works Project are to protect the property’s significant natural resources, contribute to local economic development through sustainable forestry on the property, and management of the property’s recreational opportunities to attract new nature and recreation-based tourism. Little Lyford Pond Camps, which the AMC operates on the property, serves as the recreational hub for the project and base for exploring the region.

Forest Service Dismantles Blockade at Hobson Salvage Sale
imc volunteer, 18.07.2005 21:22 Reports from the field indicate that Forest Service law enforcement officers, with the help of a logging crew, dismantled the road blockade in the Hobson old growth reserve timber sale in the Biscuit Fire area on Sunday. One arrest was made. Using bulldozers and skidders, the log cabin structure was pushed out of the way, clearing access for logging crews set to begin this week. Activists remain in the area, supporting a tree-sit in one of the units.

PL WINS RIGHT TO DELAY WATER QUALITY HEARINGS A long-running procedure by State Water Quality officials to address Pacific Lumber’s logging effects on whole watersheds was ground to a screeching halt late Tuesday, when a Superior Court Judge granted the timber corporation’s last-minute plea for a restraining order to stop a hearing that would take evidence of harm caused by logging. The Court’s intervention comes nearly two years after a decision by the Regional Water Board to draft permits called Watershed Wide Waste Discharge Requirements that would promote recovery of Freshwater Creek and Elk River - two North Coast drainages which are heavily clogged with Pacific Lumber’s logging-induced sediment. PL says the permits will cause them financial harm.

Commitment to new Centrelink Headquarters [16 September 2005]
Tuggeranong is set to become the location of one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the Australian Capital Territory after Centrelink signed a building and leasing deal with Allco / Multiplex today. This significant deal means Centrelink will lease new purpose built office space planned for Tuggeranong Town Centre over a period of 18 years. The new national head office will comprise two buildings, nearly 200 metres in length with the upper levels connected via bridges. It will house 2 790 staff and is expected to be complete by mid 2007, with Centrelink staff moving in by the end of that year. The Minister for Human Services the Hon Joe Hockey MP, said the development is a significant financial commitment by the Government for Centrelink. Signing an 18 year lease ensures that one of the Department of Human Services critical agencies operates within an efficient environment to meet its service expectation.
