Media campaign promotes Tas forestry deal
Monday, 16/05/2005 A million-dollar media campaign has begun to sell Tasmania's $250 million forestry package. Full-page ads have been taken out in local and national newspapers. But as Liz Rodway reports, the ads have not quelled concern from some sectors. "The forestry package has received support from the CFMEU and Timber Communities Australia. "But the Wilderness Society, the National Association of Forest Industries and Tasmanian farmers see flaws in the agreement. "The Prime Minister met with the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association over the weekend and agreed to set up a taskforce to address their concerns about an end to landclearing by 2015. President Roger Swain says farmers were kept in the dark on the changes, which will see thresholds for forest protection raised. "Beekeepers say the phasing out of clearfelling old growth will help the preservation and regeneration of their valuable leatherwood trees." The impact of the forestry deal is also being felt in other states.

Will Labor re-open the forestry package?
One of Federal Labor's environment spokespeople has signaled a re-writing of the Tasmanian forest policy, announced by the Prime Minister last Friday. While Labor Leader Kim Beazley offered his support for the package, quoted in The Age saying that "The outcomes are pretty good and we want to move on" , Labor's Peter Garrett has offered a different perspective. Mr Garrett told the Age today: "To suggest it's the end of the debate implies the policy's perfect. I personally think it can be improved upon ..." The Age , 18 May 2005, p18) Labor is again walking both sides of the street. The Tasmanian forestry package provides a magnificent win for the environment as well as a robust jobs outcome. Labor must now come clean and reveal how many jobs would go under Peter Garrett's plan to revise the forests package. Media Contact:

JULY 30, 2004 Michigan Tech and the Alberta Village Museum Association will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the acquisition of the Ford Forestry Center at Alberta on Saturday, Aug. 7.
The sawmill was the key part of Alberta, a model community built by Henry Ford in the 1930s and named after the daughter of H. C. Johnson, the supervisor of Ford's UP operations. The mill and the people who ran it provided wood for Ford cars, but as the company's demand for wood decreased, it scaled back its Alberta operations. In 1954 the Ford Motor Company donated Alberta and 1,700 acres of surrounding forest to Michigan Tech. The School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Tech has been running the Center since. The School now uses the center for their Fall Practicum for juniors in Forestry and Applied Ecology and Environmental Sciences degree programs, teaching, outreach, and research efforts. The Alberta Village Museum Association also runs tours of the sawmill.
