Forestry Management There are approximately 1,153 acres of forest resources, consisting of twelve sites of forest resource land that have merchantable timber and reproduction. Pierce County property being used for other purposes other than forest resource management may or may not be adjacent to the forest resource acres. The lands in the forest resource inventory are a mix of county owned and tax title properties. The Pierce County forest resource lands are being managed to maintain and enhance forest health, anesthetics and ecosystem values. Management operations consist of periodic commercial entries to Salvage (dead, dying, damaged, downed, and hazard trees) and Silvicultural crown thinning to improve the quality and growth of residual trees. Particular attention is given to protecting and enhancing snags and wildlife trees during the management operations. The long term health and viability of the forest resource is the ultimate management objective for the Pierce County forestlands.

Conservation Lands
The Conservation Authority has acquired in excess of 1052 hectares/2,600 acres of land. More than half of these lands are wetland areas that work in achieving the Provincial objectives to protect these unique environmental areas. The remaining acquisitions consist of floodplain lands, ecologically senstive areas and lands suitable for recreation. All of these lands are subsequently utilized in the Authority's Land Management Program where they assist the Authority and area municipalities in meeting parkland and open space objectives.
Reforestation and Treeplanting
Under the Lake Simcoe Water Quality Improvement Program (LSWQIP), funding is offered to assist private landowners in completing environmental projects designed to improve local surface and ground water quality, reduce soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat.

Forest Management
This option emphasizes the science-based management of forest lands, ecosystems and related natural resources to produce sustainable outputs of timber and other forest benefits. The forest management option prepares students for employment as professional foresters who find employment with land management agencies, timber and wood products companies, trade organizations and forestry consulting firms. Students in the forest management option obtain the measurement, assessment, valuation and decision making skills that are necessary for managing forest lands and ecosystems for multiple outputs in a sustainable manner. Forest management option students take the initial general education coursework and the forestry core group of courses. Coursework in the junior and senior years places an emphasis on timber management and how it relates to other natural resources and ecosystem values. By using a set of controlled electives, students may concentrate coursework in land management, wood products, business or marketing.

THE URBAN FOREST
The urban forest is the complex system of trees and smaller plants, wildlife, associated organisms, soil, water and air in and around our city. It is the trees along our streets and in our parks, the vegetation around our homes and businesses, and the plants in the natural areas throughout the city. The urban forest provides beauty and benefits to Portland residents. It provides improved air and water quality, savings from decreased heating and cooling costs and increased property resale values. The urban forest is vital to our efforts to restore fish and wildlife habitat. It provides countless opportunities for recreation and makes our neighborhoods more pleasing. It plays a significant role in the high quality of life that Portland residents enjoy. Some of the benefits of the urban forest can be measured. The energy saved, the water kept out of treatment plants, and the benefits of cleaner air can be quantified. It is estimated that one large residential tree produces $4,000 of net economic benefit over its first fifty years1 and increases residential resale values by 6 to 9%.2 The trees in the Portland metropolitan region save over $20 billion in storm water costs by eliminating the need for expensive treatment, as well as saving nearly $2 million annually in summer energy savings.3 Other benefits are less easily measured, but no less valuable. We use the urban forest for recreation and depend on it for spiritual renewal. The aesthetic and inspirational value of the hundreds of thousands of trees in Portland's urban forest is incalculable.

2002 Brule River State Forest Annual Report
Forest Management Forester Dave Schulz Spring 2002 Cutting was completed on the final hail damaged timber sales that occurred in the Stone Chimney road area. Totals for this salvage logging included 1500 acres, 29,000 cords, and $917,000 in stumpage fees collected. This made for an extremely busy time for sale administration. During most of this time daily visits to active timber sales were made to ensure contract compliance. Office administration (paperwork) continued well into summer before all sales were closed out. Site preparation and planting activities were conducted on 300 acres within the hail-damaged area. This included using a machine to create scalps to plant trees into and having a contract hand planting crew planting approximately 300,000 seedlings (168M red pine, 60M white pine, 36M jack pine, 24M white spruce, 6M white cedar, 6M tamarack) within this area. The crew we had was from Guatemala and was excellent. They had some trouble with their motel (Twin Gables) burning down on the first night in town, but the community truly helped them out as many of their belongings were lost in the fire. A successful volunteer tree planting day was held to plant trees within the Wilson Creek corridor along Hwy P. About 30 people showed up from groups such the Brule River Sportsman’s Club, Trout Unlimited, and Wisconsin Professional Loggers Association. About 8,000 trees were planted in tough conditions on a snowy April day.

"Prior to making the switch to X-Hive, we unfortunately had to say NO to a variety of requests from potential customers. By migrating to the X-Hive database, we've been able to dramatically increase the flexibility of our offerings -which now enables us to adapt the general application in order to fit unique customer requests. As a result, we are confident we'll be able to close a lot more deals." Gary Mullaney, Forest Technology Group FTG's Senior Systems Developer, Per Englund concurs with Mullaney. "In order to bring new customers on board, we needed to be able to configure a wide array of disparate data in a very short period of time, and share this data in a remote fashion. Since we've made the switch to the X-Hive/DB, we've been able to add the functionality we need to accommodate custom data, and we're now able to package it up in a manner that our customers demand."

Forestry management on indigenous peoples’ lands
:: Introduction
:: De facto situation and indigenous peoples’ concerns and desires

:: Understanding the terms of the legislation

:: A guarantee of the community’s constitutional rights
Introduction How may indigenous communities legally explore lumber in their areas? The explanation is made by Paulo Pankararu ISA Law Program-Programa Direito Socioambiental- ISA The commercial exploration of lumber on indigenous community lands is a controversial question which has been receiving different analyses, either in the conceptions of the indigenous communities themselves, or by anthropologists, environmentalists, specialists in law, public institutions and non-governmental organizations. The central aspect of the controversy is whether the indigenous communities can or cannot explore or commercialize wood on their lands. This controversy has been the result of a lack of a clear interpretation of pertaining legislation and consistent public policies to support the sustainable development of indigenous communities.
De facto situation and indigenous peoples’ concerns
However, despite the vehement degree the sectors defended the prohibition of the sale or commercialization of lumber from the indigenous lands, millions of cubic meters of wood have been extracted illegally from these lands, enriching only the owners of the lumber companies. This shows that it is simply not enough to establish regulations, which prohibit the commercialization of the lumber and resources of these lands to protect the interests and patrimony of the indigenous communities. The debate should concentrate on the de facto situation of the communities and their concerns regarding their resources.
