Strategic Land Use Planning
Sustainable Resource Management Planning Forest and Range Practices Act
The Working Forest policy reflects the balance of interests and social choices developed in local land use plans, and supports working families and communities by providing forest-dependent industries with a clear understanding of local priorities and objectives. Under the policy, BC's forests will remain in public hands. Provisions under the Land Act legally prohibit the sale of Crown land for timber production purposes. A key component of the Working Forest policy is the development of area objectives for timber harvesting, conservation values and other uses. These objectives will be developed over time across the province, using land and resource management plans that have been developed with the input of communities, key stakeholder groups and First Nations. The Agreements provide certainty for forest-based industries, forest-dependent communities and conservation. They are the result of years of scientific study, consultation and negotiation covering a diverse range of interests. This RFA website is a whole-of-Australian Government initiative. It is hosted by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) in association with the Department of the Environment and Heritage . Alert to Firewood Cutters!
If you see cut trees that display any symptoms and plan to remove the wood, you will likely be transporting beetle brood. Unless the wood is burned or debarked before the following May, these broods could emerge and attack adjacent living spruce. To avoid this situation, leave the bark onsite or any cut trees from which broods have departed. These trees appear grey and have dropped all needles.

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Nearly two-thirds of salaried conservation scientists and foresters work for Federal, State, or local governments.
  • A bachelor’s degree in forestry, range management, or a related discipline is the minimum educational requirement.
  • Slower-than-average job growth is projected because of limited growth in government and in forestry and logging; most employment opportunities will be in private sector consulting.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Forests and rangelands supply wood products, livestock forage, minerals, and water; serve as sites for recreational activities; and provide habitats for wildlife. Conservation scientists and foresters manage, develop, use, and help to protect these and other natural resources. Foresters Throughout the forest management and procurement processes, foresters consider the economics as well as the environmental impact on natural resources. To do this, they determine how to conserve wildlife habitats, creek beds, water quality, and soil stability, and how best to comply with environmental regulations. Foresters must balance the desire to conserve forested ecosystems for future generations with the need to use forest resources for recreational or economic purposes.

Forestry Facts: An Overview Australia's forest industry, its employees, and the dependent communities want the public to know the facts about forests and forest products.
The industry is open and visible, and has been under very close scrutiny for many years. Recently, such examination has included the most comprehensive independent study-ever the Resource Assessment Commission (RAC) "Forest and Timber Inquiry" (1992). Governments have also examined forests and forest industries in the Ecological Sustainable Development Forest Report (1991), and the National Plantation Advisory Committee Report (1991).
The National Forest Policy Statement signed in 1992 is the joint response of the federal government and the state and territory governments to the three major reports on forest issues. The Commonwealth Government and State Governments in Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland have entered into a number of Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs) between 1997 and 2001 that provide a framework for forest management and the implementation of the National Forest Policy Statement.
RFAs apply for up to 20 years and have three main objectives:
  • to protect environmental values in a Comprehensive, Adequate and Representative (CAR) Reserve System based on nationally agreed criteria;
  • 114. Canada's Model Forest Program
