The following is about a racist decision on forestry by the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources. It involves the government justifying exclusion of native people from decision-making. I follow up the article with my own explanation of why I am calling the govnerment's position racist.
As published on June 25, 2005
Natives left off forest management task force
First Nations community will have no say in any recommendations on future of province's forest industry
FREDERICTON - New Brunswick's First Nation communities won't have a voice on the recently-announced task force looking at the future of forest management in the province, says Department of Natural Resources Minister Keith Ashfield.
"This task force is more science-based, information-based," the minister said yesterday.
"This is very much a science-based task force and it has a very specific direction and we want to move it along fairly quickly," he said.

Landowners call for Forestry Law repeal GULF and Sandaun landowners have urged the Government to repeal the recent controversial amendments to the 1991 Forestry Act. Charging that the changes denied their rights to be consulted on the development of their resources and would affect lawsuits they commence against logging companies, the landowners said the amendments should be repealed during Parliament's October sitting Jant logging operations criticised July 22, 2005 . Local MP, Alois Kingsley has strongly criticised the forest operations of the Japanese owned JANT logging company in Madang Province. In Parliament this week the MP said that local people had not received any tangible benefits after more than 30 years of logging and they suffered from the damage to the environment. Kingsley also questioned why the company was being allowed to export wood chips rather than processing the timber on-shore. Rimbunan Hijau subsidiary accepts expulsion July 16, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Government of Canada invests in the New Brunswick Aboriginal Forestry Initiative under the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership program FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK "This project is clearly going to make a positive difference in the career choices open to Aboriginal peoples, and a definite contribution to the prosperity of local communities and Canada's economy as a whole", said Minister Scott. "The Government of Canada is proud to be part of a project that will strengthen Canada's Aboriginal labour force by ensuring long- term sustainable employment and address the increasing need for technicians and foresters." Combined funding from all partners will be of $5.4 million, and the expected result for this initiative is the creation of approximately 100 long-term forestry-related jobs and skills upgrading for approximately 200 Aboriginal people. The forestry sector is an important part of the New Brunswick economy contributing to over 15,000 direct jobs and almost as many indirect opportunities, as well as accounting for annual wages and salaries of approximately $925 million. Commenting on the initiative, New Brunswick's Minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, the Honourable Brad Green, noted that it will foster greater opportunities for Aboriginal employment through partnerships with Mi'kmaq and Maliseet communities and praised the Aboriginal partners, saying "Their leadership, foresight and spirit of co-operation are key to the project's success."

July 6, 2004 MACARTHUR FOUNDATION PROVIDES $1.5 MILLION TO GOVERNMENT OF BHUTAN FOR NEW FORESTRY SCHOOL School to Train Conservationists for Country's Vast Forest Reserves CHICAGO, ILThe John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has announced a grant of $1.5 million to the Royal Government of Bhutan to establish a new forestry schoolthe Ugyen Wangchuck School of Forestry and Environmental Studiesto train conservationists and managers for the country's forest nature reserves, which cover 35 percent of the country. "Bhutan's forest cover is one of the most extensive in the world for a country of its size, and we feel privileged to help the government preserve its natural treasure," said Jonathan Fanton, President of the MacArthur Foundation. "Nearly 72 percent of Bhutan's land remains under natural forest cover and more than a third of the country is under formal protected status. Its protected area network is also one of the few systems that reflect modern scientific approaches to conservation. With the new forestry school, Bhutan is poised to develop one of the most sophisticated country-wide conservation programs in the world." "We are envisioning that the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute of Forestry and Environmental Studies will not only contribute to the conservation of our country's rich and diverse biodiversity, but that it will also serve as a great resource for conservation efforts across the Himalaya region," said Sangay Ngedup, Minister of Agriculture for the Royal Government of Bhutan.

U.S. Climate Change Action Plan The U.S. Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) relies primarily on innovative partnerships with the private sector, states, and localities to address the challenge of global warming while strengthening the economy. The CCAP is a comprehensive plan targeting major greenhouse gases in all sectors of the economy. The EPA contribution to the CCAP involves more than 50 voluntary programs that build upon existing programs, technologies, and voluntary efforts to deliver cost-effective results. Agriculture related programs, jointly administered by USDA and EPA, include the AgSTAR Program and the Ruminant Livestock Efficiency Program (RLEP).
The AgSTAR Program focuses on working with farmers on technologies that capture the methane released from manure management systems. The program encourages the use of methane recovery (biogas) technologies by confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Also, methane recovery achieves other environmental benefits including odor control. This voluntary program is jointly sponsored by EPA, USDA, and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
