61. Forestry For Non-Foresters, Part I And Part II

http://www.gactr.uga.edu/conferences/2005/May/17/nonforesters.phtml
The field of forestry is often described as a mix of science and art. Blending the needs and objectives of landowners and society with the characteristics and potential of land is a complex endeavor. Forestry history in the South is rich and exciting and has led to one of the most ecologically diverse and economically important regions in the country. This course will provide an introduction to forest management in the South.
Anyone with an interest in forestry and forest management is invited to participate. The course will be especially useful for landowners and those who work with foresters and the forest industry. Others who will benefit include media professionals, attorneys, accountants, administrative support personnel, teachers, natural resource professionals, and real estate appraisers.
This course is being held at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education in Athens, Georgia. Part of the course features visits to a local forest and a sawmill (transportation included). Protective headgear will be provided; however, outdoor clothing for these trips is recommended (sturdy shoes a must!).
Bill Hubbard , a faculty member of UGA's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences since 1993, serves 13 state universities and the USDA Forest Service as a coordinator of regional programs and projects. Bill has 18 years of experience working with landowners and natural resource professionals on forestry-related educational programs. He also has taught several forest economics and forest management courses at the University of Florida. For 5 years he has served as regional coordinator of the "Master Tree Farmer/Master Wildlifer" satellite short course programs for landowners and professionals.

Introduction Why study forestry at UC? Background required ... Contact
Introduction
Forestry is a major export earner for New Zealand - with dairy and meat it is one of the three most important exports. But while earnings from dairy and meat are increasing slowly, export earnings from forestry are set to skyrocket over the next 10-20 years as the amount of wood available for harvest rapidly increases - forestry is likely to become the single biggest export earner for New Zealand within the next few years. Forestry is extremely diverse, with a degree in forestry leading to potential careers in conservation and environmental management, growth and harvesting of production forests, wood processing, marketing, biosecurity or policy. In all sectors there is a need for graduates who have good management skills, are quantitatively competent and are able to tackle a diverse range of problems with imagination and innovation.
Why study forestry at UC?
The New Zealand School of Forestry at the University of Canterbury is the only university department in New Zealand which offers degrees in forestry.

Forestry Major
Geology Major Natural Resources Major A study of forest ecosystems and the environmental components and processes (biological, physical, and chemical) that affect them. Forestry majors at Sewanee will integrate traditional forestry courses (such as dendrology, silviculture, biometrics, forest ecology, and natural resource management) with a wide-ranging number of courses outside the department, including economics, biology, statistics, chemistry, and mathematics. Courses in geology, soils, hydrology, tropical and boreal forestry, wildlife management, and natural resource policy are also encouraged or required. Altogether, a total of nine full department courses, plus the junior presentations and senior project seminars, are required, as shown in the table below. A summer internship in a forestry-related field is strongly recommended. Forestry majors also may participate in a 3-2 program with Duke University, taking three years of work at Sewanee and two years at Duke, culminating in both a Sewanee's Bachelor's degree and a Duke Master's degree. The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources offers one of the most flexible Bachelor of Science degree programs in forest resource management available in the United States. Accredited by the Society of American Foresters, the curriculum combines a broad education in the arts and sciences with courses in applied forest sciences and the unique opportunity to minor in an area of special interest.
The Bachelor of Science degree in forest resource management prepares you for employment in both the public and private sectors. You may be employed as a manager or administrator by a forest landowner; as a technical specialist in the production of timber, water, wildlife, aesthetic values and/or recreational use of the forest; or as a professional in other areas dealing with the conservation of our natural resources.
Although most Clemson graduates remain in the Southeast, Clemson University foresters work in almost every state and in several foreign countries. The curriculum also provides the necessary prerequisites for students who wish to pursue

[Map of Creswick Campus] ... Township] Creswick is one of eight campuses that make up the University of Melbourne's Institute of Land and Food Resources . The campus is situated 120kms from Melbourne and just 10 minutes from Ballarat, Victoria's largest regional city. The Creswick campus was established as the Victorian School of Forestry in 1910. Today the campus offers a broad range of educational opportunities. It is the location for the 3rd year of the University of Melbourne's Bachelor of Forest Science . An Advanced Diploma and a number of TAFE courses are also offered. Twenty-five to thirty postgraduate research students are also based on site undertaking projects in a range of forest disciplines. The School of Forest and Ecosystem Science, a collaboration between the University of Melbourne and the Department of Sustainability and Environment, is a new addition to the Creswick campus. The CRC for Wood Innovations and CRC for Catchment Hydrology are also based on site. These provide state-of-the-art resources and a valuable learning environment for the University of Melbourne's undergraduate and postgraduate forestry students. The Creswick campus offers a unique educational opportunity with the lecture theatres surrounded by forests that are regularly used as our outdoor classrooms. This environment provides students with the opportunity to achieve the highest level of scientific learning while also developing the practical skills required to understand forest ecosystems. Students have access to the many practical facilities on the campus as well as the adjacent landcare centre, nursery, training sawmill and a diverse range of forests.

    Habitat for Biologists
Help us raise $200,000 for cabins at Itasca.
Nature continuously restores habitats for wildlife at Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories, but hasn't been as kind to human habitats, most of which were built at the station between 1909 and the 1960s. Moreover, state funds aren't keeping pace with renovation needs. So, the College of Biological Sciences has launched "Habitat for Biologists," a campaign to improve Itasca facilities. Currently, we are raising $200,000 for two building projects:
    1) $150,000 to restore historic cabin 4, built in 1911 from tamarack logs on a stone foundation. Cabin 4, which has three bedrooms, is for faculty and visiting scientists.
    2) $50,000 for a new cabin for women students to replace cabin 30, which was condemned and demolished in fall 2004.
We hope you will consider making a tax-deductible contribution to one of these projects. We are also looking for volunteers who can help build cabin 30 over two weekends in September.
