Vocational Certificate in Forestry - Level 2
This one year course, accredited by the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC), is offered at the Teagasc Agricultural College, Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan. Forestry is a significant growth area in Irish agriculture with about 12,000 hectares being planted each year. Over the past 10 years up to 150,000 hectares have been planted by over 10,000 landowners. Planting trees and maintaining forests are highly mechanised but labour intensive activities with a high demand for trained personnel. This course provides the training for people who wish to take up these jobs in forestry as workers and supervisors. Jobs in the area are readily available and pay rates are good. There is no minimum educational entry requirement for the course but students who have completed the Leaving Certificate are likely to benefit most from it. Applicants must be over 17 years on 1 October in the year of entry to the course. On successfully completing the course students may progress to the Vocational Certificate in Forestry - Level 3 or go directly into employment.

Program Overview
The two-year Forestry Technician program prepares graduates with a wide range of skills, enabling them to work with forestry consultants, professional foresters, biologists, and other scientists. Extensive fieldwork is carried out on a regular basis and annual field camps are part of the program. A 50-hectare outdoor laboratory that is partially forested is part of the campus. Students learn about logging, the manufacture of forest products, forest management, forestry laws, forest ecology, and research in the forestry field. Further, the sustainable development concept is defined, discussed, and applied in practical ways. Sault Ste. Marie is an appropriate setting for learning about various forestry activities. It is located in the heart of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence mixed forest with ready access to the boreal forest to the north. The Great Lakes Forestry Centre, the Ontario Forest Research Institute, the Forest Pest Management Institute, the Ontario Aviation, Flood and Fire Management Centre, the headquarters for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Forest Management Branch, a Ministry of Natural Resources District Office, a provincial fish hatchery, Algoma Forest Coalition, and several other forest product companies are located in or near the Sault.

Runnymede Campus
The Campus is situated at Cooper's Hill on the slopes above the River names at Runnymede. It commands views of Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, and West London. Windsor Castle and the Thames are clearly seen from the site. Close by is the Kennedy Memorial is and, further down the slopes, is the Magna Carta memorial erected by the American Bar Association to commemorate the sealing ofthe Charter in 1215. History: 12th - 19th Centuries In 1160 Abbot Hugh of Cbertsey gave the site to the Priory of Ankerwyke. Henry VIII granted it, in 1539, to Andrew, Lord Windsor, by which time it had become the manor Parnish (or 'perchnos' stubble land with pear trees). The first trace of the name "Cowper" appears in 1547; the family were continual offenders against the Forest Laws. In 1550 Edward VI gave the site to Sir Thomas Smith, Secretary of State. Owned by John Lee in 1652, it passed by marriage to Simon Harcourt in the 18th Century and remained in the family until it was bought in the 19th Century by Baron Albert Grant the financier. He entertained lavishly and a visit by the Prince of Wales is recorded. Following the financial collapse of Grant, the building was put up for sale. Royal Indian Engineering College Sir George Chesney was succeeded as President in 1880 by Sir Alexander Taylor who was awarded a GCB in 1889 and retired from the College in 1896. His statue stands near the main drive, and bears the legend "a hero of the Indian Mutiny". It was brought all the way from Delhi in 1960 by his grandchildren and the Cooper's Hill Society. Taylor was succeeded by the General Pennycuik who presided over its culture in 1906. The work of the College was moved to India where a new college was created using the Cooper's Hill name.

Education, Training and Advocacy The original focus of VDT's work was environmental awareness relating to community timber resources and the training of villagers in the process of small scale sustainble forestry. VDT quickly became recognized within Papua New Guinea and through out the South Pacific as a leader in eco-forestry training and advocacy. Over the last 7 years VDT has delivered more than 60 courses, work shops and trainings to over 1600 participants. 95% of these participants were village residents. Currently VDT provides the following forestry courses and workshops: Small Scale Sustainable Forestry Courses : Many of these 3-week training courses are conducted in partnership with the Timber Industry Training College in Lae. The VDT portion includes both the theory and practical adoption of small-scale forestry operations. A portion of the time is spent in the field at different VDT village partner projects. While VDT's partnership with TITC is continuing, the new training facility at Kamiali will allow an expansion of these courses; it will also increase the opportunity for more village residents from along the Morobe Coast and other parts of Papua New Guinea to benefit from attendance at such trainings. Resource Awareness Workshops: These 3-day workshops are conducted in different regions of Papua New Guinea and offer village communities the opportunity to discuss what is happening to the country's forests and consider the question: "What are you doing about it?" These workshops encourage people to share their perspectives and draw on the positive and negative results within communities through out Papua New Guinea. A major objective of the course is for people to consider alternative methods for developing their resources and to support them in taking appropriate actions.

Wageningen foresters help set up international forestry courses throughout Europe
The SILVA Network, led by Wageningen foresters, is helping foster close cooperation between European universities, both for education and research. Wageningen staff give lectures in Spain and Sweden, and students from all over Europe will be able to follow international lectures through the Internet in the near future. The Virtual Forestry Academy is the newest plan to emerge from the network of foresters. The idea is to enable the different areas of expertise of the more than thirty university forestry departments in Europe to be utilised more efficiently. "Courses will be created for students from all over Europe, in which the introductory and concluding sessions are given in person by a lecturer, and the middle part takes place through e-mail and the Internet. It's still early days, but the SILVA Network makes this kind of experiment possible," says Professor Frits Mohren, chair of the Forest Ecology and Forest Management group at Wageningen University. The SILVA Network (European Forest Science Academic Network) was set up in 1989, as the result of an Erasmus exchange programme, at the initiative of a number of university lecturers including Dr Pieter Schmidt at Wageningen University. He was chair of the network until 1997.

OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT REPORT DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY VIRGINIA TECH April, 2001 Background Information The purpose of the Department of Forestry at Virginia Tech is to educate undergraduate students to recognize and solve the problems of modern forestry, while insuring that these students have prerequisite entry-level technical skills. The purpose of the department's graduate education program is to produce outstanding researchers, educators, and practitioners by combining high-quality faculty and a student body selected from the best candidates in this country and abroad with courses offering the most advanced knowledge. The department is meeting these objectives today with strong and active programs in teaching, research, and extension. The department currently has 26 faculty (including partial appointments), 8 technical staff, and 6 clerical staff to support these objectives. The department's FTE distribution is 10.35, 9.55, and 2.85 in teaching, research, and extension, respectively. These faculty numbers, which were badly eroded starting with the first round of budget cuts in 1989, are not yet restored to adequate levels.

Contents Previous Next Education for agro-forestry Peter A. Huxley Introduction Because agro-forestry is so relevant to the development needs of tropical and sub-tropical countries the growth of agro-forestry education is likely to proceed even faster in the developing world than elsewhere. There is another factor which may promote this, the fact that many institutes of education in developing countries are less affected by historical constraints and rigid organization, so that they may benefit by a greater infrastructural flexibility. At least, it is to be hoped that this is so! In addressing the possibilities for agro-forestry education I feel that there is room for a very wide range of informed opinion and considered views. In preparing this paper I have, therefore, set some ideas down more in the form of a structure for discussion than as a formal paper. See also Contant (1979), Roche and Cooper (1980). 1. Do we Actually Need to Set up New Programmers or Courses to Teach a Subject Called "Agro-forestry"? I would unhesitatingly suggest, therefore, that we do need to teach agro-forestry as a specific subject in its own right.
