Private Forestry Associations Offer Many Benefits to Forest Landowners Virginia Forest Landowner Update Summer 1999 Volume 13, No. 3 One of the greatest challenges faced by new and veteran forest landowners alike is obtaining timely information on natural resource management issues. While the first place to turn for assistance is often your state government agencies, e.g., the Virginia Departments of Forestry, Game and Inland Fisheries, and Cooperative Extension, private forestry associations offer many benefits to forest landowners that state agencies do not. Most notable, all forestry associations work at the state and/or federal level to seek regulatory change for the benefit of forest landowners. Forestry associations also offer resources such as magazines and annual conferences that share up-to-date information on regulatory issues, timber and estate taxes, forest products marketing and other topics. Perhaps the most important benefit of private forestry associations is their close cooperation with state and federal natural resource agencies to provide quality education programs such as field days, bus tours, conferences, and short courses for forest landowners.

Principal types of forestry associations and their function Such forestry associations can play an important part in deciding forest policy.
http://www.fao.org/docrep/55408e/55408e04.htm
The function of professional forestry associations
THERE IS NO DOUBT that trends in the development of economic and social conditions in the modern world lead to the formation of groups. Both the individual and the small concern with no outside backing feel incapable of solving problems. Private demands are of no avail in face of the complex structure which controls daily life, and the financial means at the disposal of a single individual are inadequate for the achievement of broadly-based schemes. On the other hand, when charged with the duty of carrying out some program or agreed policy, government departments are finding it increasingly difficult to gain the essential co-operation of the individual and generally approach a specialist association which can assist their efforts and even become the means of attaining their objectives. It is therefore not to be wondered at that many and varied associations concerned with problems connected with forests and forest industries have been and are increasingly being organized in countries where these problems are of some social and economic importance. These associations are coming to play an ever increasing part in the direction and development of national forest policy. A group only takes definite shape or becomes an association when all its members agree to adhere to its constitution. But what generally speaking is a forestry association and, in particular, what is a professional forestry association?

5. FORESTRY POLICIES LEGISLATION AND INSTITUTIONS
5.1 Main Forestry Policy in Future
In Korea, the most important forest policy up to now is reforestation. It has been necessary and urgent for Korea to accomplish the reforestation and erosion control as soon as possible in order to increase protection from the loss of farmland, droughts, floods, etc.. As a result, international organizations like FAO, WRI consider Korea as an outstanding example of a successfully reforested country in the world. However the reforestation in Korea should be more evaluated than any other countries from the point of view of intentional reforestation of devastated mountains, not for industrial timber production. The current objectives of Korean forest policy can be summarized as follows: first, harmonious forest land management between conservation and development, second, fostering competitive forestry by improving the management and structure, and finally establishment of land environment to improve living conditions and to preserve beautiful landscapes. In future, Forestry Administration will focus on the following main targets: First, improvement of reasonable forest land use system.

Advanced Present > National Forest Week INTRODUCTION National Forest Week is of interest to all Canadians because forests are so important to their country and themselves. It is a "once a year" event and helps remind all that day in, day out and through the years, forests are an essential part of the Canadian landscape and lifestyle. The following are suggestions for anyone who wants to take part in this special Week. The opportunities for participation are almost boundless - restricted only by the limits of imagination, interest and information. WHAT IS NATIONAL FOREST WEEK? National Forest Week is an annual observance in Canada during which attention is focused on the country's woodlands. Its main purpose is to help increase public awareness of the importance of Canada's forests and their careful management for present and future needs. It is a "do it yourself" event during which individuals, groups and those involved in various phases of resource management are encouraged to do something special to emphasize their interests in forestry. National Forest Week has been held since the 1920's, starting at that time as Forest Fire Prevention Week and developing over the years to its present form. During that period, its focus has expanded from prevention of forest fires in the early days to a broader look at many influences which can affect the forest and are affected by it.

delivers a renewable source of materials for industry, can provide food and shelter and stores solar energy for later use. Well managed forests can also provide a wide range of other benefits including recreation, amenity and environmental enhancement. To achieve this balance requires highly skilled professionals. The Internet provides an effective way of finding and sharing information (data and knowledge) about forestry. The GAOF web site provides a range of forest information but also the various mailing lists available to the members are a source of shared forest knowledge As a profession forestry employs many people with a wide range of skills but there are many others amongst our members are genuine 'Forest People'. Whether you have a specific enquiry of a technical nature or are just generally interested in forestry, 'Ask a Forester' will try to answer your question or put you in contact with your local forester. 'Ask a Forester' is a free service provided by the Global Association of Online Foresters. The aim of the GAOF is to help you to make friends with other 'Forest People' from all corners of the world and to promote all aspects of forestry.

http://solstice.crest.org/environment/renew_america/98nar/98h3673.htm
Description of Program The SFIs' program was developed by professional foresters, conservationists and scientists. These men and women were inspired by the concept of sustainability that evolved from the 1987 report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, and was subsequently adopted by the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative program is based on the premise that responsible environmental policy and sound business practices can be integrated to the benefit of companies, shareholders, customers and the people they serve. Augmenting the efforts of individual member companies to promote sustainable forestry on industry-owned lands, a network of alliances has been assembled to advocate sustainable forestry practices to private landowners, loggers and foresters. Allies include state forestry associations, logging associations, government agencies, logging contractors, state universities, along with numerous conservation organizations. In 32 states, industry representatives have joined with these groups to form SFI implementation committees that are responsible for promoting SH principles and expanding their use. This is critical since 9.3 million private forest land owners control almost 60 percent of the nation's timberland and produce more than half of the nation's wood supply. In 1997, more than 86,000 private landowners across the country received information on sustainable forestry practices through the SFI program.
