Brief Guide to Library Research
Information resources have exploded over the last ten years both in terms of types of media, and in the technology of access. In addition to print books and journals, video and film, electronic resources, such as CD-ROM, the Internet, and World Wide Web require that we all learn new ways of finding information that is relevant to our study and research. There are a number of ways you can get information, many formats and searching techniques. It is often hard to find your way. Researching the literature relating to forest or natural resources policy and law requires using different tools than when researching the scientific or professional literature in these fields. This lesson will cover some of the tools available at the UW Libraries, and give some tips on how to conduct a search for information using a variety of electronic and print products from various library units including Government Publications.
Catalogs vs Indexes
A Catalog represents the materials that a library owns . The records in the UW Libraries Catalog indicate the books, journal and series titles, individual reports and conference proceedings that are on the shelves in particular locations within the UW Libraries. You will not find titles of articles in the journals, or individual papers from conferences listed in the Catalog; however, some individual research reports have separate records.

Getting started tips:
International Forestry
BEGIN BEFORE YOU ARE READY:
  • Consider possible research topics early While you can get a good deal of material "locally" and via the Web, it may take a little longer than you expect to get paper copies of other material. If you use Hotmail or another "free" email service, plan to use your ONID email when you are searching databases because:
    • free email services frequently do not allow you enough memory space to receive PDF files, or
    • automatically file items sent from databases into your "junk mail" and
    • when this happens, it is your time that is wasted.
PLACES TO GO, PEOPLE TO SEE:
  • Visit the Library or take a virtual tour to familiarize yourself with what is where.
  • Before you begin looking for information on your topic contact the OSU Natural Resources Librarian for suggestions on search strategies and databases:
  • Contact the person working at Library Reference Desk (737-7295) when you are in the building or need to know something specific (do we have a particular book, etc.).
  • For more specific assistance contact me Bonnie Avery at bonnie.avery@oregonstate.edu

The Constitution of FAO states that "the Organization shall collect, analyse, interpret and disseminate information relating to nutrition, food and agriculture". As part of this mandate, a system of FAO depository libraries is maintained, in order to make the publications of FAO freely available to the general public.
The libraries listed in this directory are normally national libraries, or major research libraries or educational institutions with programs related to the goals and objectives of FAO, open to the public free of charge. Each member country is entitled to at least one depository library.
Each entry in this list contains the following information:
  • the name and address of the library
  • the beginning year of deposit
  • the language of material deposited
The designation of depository libraries and the distribution of material to them is the responsibility of the Information Division of FAO. Correspondence concerning changes of name and addresses, requests and suggestions should be addressed to the Chief, Sales and Marketing Group, Information Division, FAO, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, 00100 Rome, Italy, fax (+39 6) 5705 3360, or by E-mail at Publications-Sales@fao.org
