Nature of the Discipline
Agriculture, including Veterinary Science, is essentially a practical professional course of study at the University of Melbourne. Considerable research is undertaken within the Faculty but a substantial amount of this is carried out in the field and in the laboratory. For research study, therefore, journal literature has the greatest prominence and monographic material is mainly geared to a postgraduate study level. The Library aims to collect sufficient core monographic material to support teaching, and basic texts in other areas to support general inquiries. As with other sciences, the major journal literature in the agricultural sciences is increasingly available in English language editions, as are conference proceedings and technical report literature. There is currently little, if any, demand for foreign language material. Overseas students are well accustomed to studying in English.

Introduction Research Management Human Resource Research Facilities ... Strategic Plan
    Introduction
As part of Government’s efforts to improve the agricultural sector through well-targeted research, the National Agricultural Research Project (NARP) was initiated in 1991. It was designed to create an agricultural research system whose impact would be evident by helping to make agriculture more productive, alleviate hunger and poverty, generate employment, and improve the natural resource base of the country. It was also established to formulate a long term National Agricultural Strategic Plan (NARSP), support its implementation and ensure improvement in research management and research linkages and develop research skills of present and future scientists within the National Agricultural Research System (NARS). The NARP was implemented by the Agricultural Forestry and Fisheries Sector (AFFS). Research Management Development
This entails the development of processes and institutional arrangements to improve how research is conducted and managed in Ghana at the national, institute, and programme levels. It was also to ensure that research priorities are linked to the national development objectives and also to develop a National Agricultural Research Strategic Plan. Attainment of Objectives:
    • A structure, such as the National Agricultural Research Committee (NARC) was established as the apex body responsible for agricultural research policy. It has, however, been designated as the Agricultural Research Policy Co-ordinating Committee (ARPCC). The functions of ARPCC covers agricultural research policy formulation and setting broad macro priorities in the allocation of resources to agricultural research. It is now to be replaced by a similar body with members of the "Council" of CSIR. The Committee is to be chaired by the MOFA representative on the Council.

    31. Ghana Agricultural Information Network System (GAINS)
under the CSIR, the faculties of agricultural libraries of the Universities, of Food and agriculture Library; forestry Research Institute Library (CSIR)
    http://www.csir.org.gh/gains.html
    WHAT IS GAINS?
GAINS is an acronym for Ghana Agricultural Information Network System.
It is the Library and Information System Component of the Government of
Ghana/World Bank supported National Agricultural Research Project (NARP).
GAINS links the libraries of all the agricultural research institutions
under the CSIR, the faculties of agricultural libraries of the Universities,
the library of Biotechnology and Nuclear Agricultural Research Institute (BNARI)
and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA).
The network was established to strengthen the information infrastructure
to support agricultural research management which will eventually lead to
    increased agricultural production. Objectives:
The main objective of GAINS is to establish a coordinated system under the leadership of INSTI (CSIR) to identify. Collect, process and disseminate agricultural information generated in Ghana or elsewhere in whatever format to support agricultural research and ultimately increase agricultural production to the economic and social benefits of the country. Structure: GAINS is made up of the National Focal Point which is located at INSTI and fifteen libraries representing key agricultural research institutes, Faculty of Agriculture of the Universities, BNARI and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The structure is based on the principle of collaboration and cooperation and it is a flexible one which emphasizes a participative model rather than a rigidly hierarchical one

    George A. Smathers Libraries History
First Library and Professional Development, 1918 - 1937
When Miltimore came to the university in 1918 there were less than 500 students and the library had about 20,000 books and 130 periodicals. The library consisted of one room and a small office on the first floor of Peabody Hall, and the library staff consisted of student assistants. There was little seating available and the students often had to sit on the floor. Dr. Enwall taught a psychology class across the hall and allowed its use for seating when he wasn’t using it for class. The academic departments, coordinated by the Library Committee, had charge of the book and periodical budgets. With a new building, an increasing collection, and a larger staff, 1925/26 was a time for organizational development. Assistant librarian positions had recently been created and the Library was finally organized into departments, starting with the Cataloging, Circulation and Reference Departments. It may have also been around this time that Miltimore’s title evolved from Librarian to University Librarian to distinguish the director from the other librarians. Reports in the early 1930s were from the University Librarian, although the signatures at the end of the reports still had the title Librarian. The library also acquired its first special collection, the donated Rev. Rees W. Edwards Memorial Collection for religion and philosophy (consisting of about 250 volumes).
