Daily Forest Fire Danger Report
The Forest Fire Danger Level for Wednesday, September 21, 2005 is LOW The DEP's Forest Fire Control Office urges all who enjoy the use of Connecticut's parks, forests and open spaces, to use fires with caution and practice forest fire prevention tips especially during forest fire season. People need to obey local laws regarding open fires carefully dispose of hot charcoal , and completely extinguish smoking materials As Smokey Bear says "Only you can prevent wildfires!" Connecticut traditionally experiences high forest fire danger in the Spring from mid-March through May. DEP's Division of Forestry constantly monitors the danger of forest fire to help protect Connecticut's 1.8 million acres of forested land. Throughout the Spring forest fire season, DEP sends daily advisories on forest fire danger levels to DEP's state park forest field staff, municipalities, fire departments and the media. Forest fire danger levels are classified at low, moderate, high, very high or extreme. In an average year approximately 1,300 acres of Connecticut woodland are scorched by forest fires. If you have received a permit from your local Open Burning Official to burn brush on your property, the permit is not valid if the Forest Fire Danger is rated

Landscapes such as those seen in Yellowstone have long been shaped by fire and not just the cool, creeping ground fires often described as "good" for grass production. The natural history of fire in the park includes large-scale conflagrations sweeping across the park’s vast volcanic plateaus, hot, wind-driven fires torching up the trunks to the crowns of the pine and fir trees at several hundred-year intervals. Many of Yellowstone’s plant species are fire-adapted. Some (not all) of the lodgepole pines ( Pinus contorta ), which make up nearly 80% of the park’s extensive forests, have cones that are serotinous sealed by resin until the intense heat of fire cracks the bonds and releases the seeds inside. Fires may stimulate regeneration of sagebrush, aspen, and willows, but the interactions between these plants and fire is complicated by other influences such as grazing levels and climate. Though above-ground parts of grasses and forbs are consumed by flames, the below-ground root systems typically remain unharmed, and for a few years after fire these plants commonly increase in productivity. In the first sixteen years of Yellowstone’s natural fire policy (1972-1987), 235 fires were allowed to burn 33,759 acres. Only 15 of those fires were larger than 100 acres, and all of the fires were extinguished naturally. Public response to the fires was good, and the program was considered a success. The summers of 1982-1987 were wetter than average, which may have contributed to the relatively low fire activity in those years.

Abstract
A hotspot is a mark on an infrared satellite image that gives the appearance of burning vegetation. Fire Monitoring, Mapping and Modeling (Fire M3) System is a national fire information system that identifies, monitors and maps large forest fires on a daily basis using the hotspots. It provides an overview of forest fire activity in Canada on a daily basis. This map shows all the fires that were detected in the 2005 forest fire season. Read more about this map

MADRID, Spain (CNN) A forest fire apparently sparked by a weekend barbecue has killed at least 11 firefighters and continued to burn out of control on Monday in a hilly area east of Madrid, forcing the evacuation of 400 villagers, a regional government spokeswoman told CNN. The blaze has burned more than 8,000 hectares, or 19,700 acres, in Guadalajara province, just east of Madrid, said Environment Minister Cristina Narbona, in an interview with Radio SER, monitored by CNN. Spain's state news agency EFE reported it was the deadliest forest fire, in terms of the death toll, in the past 13 years. The 11 forest agents, under contract to battle forest fires, were led by Felix Mansilla, a Guadalajara provincial fire fighting coordinator. He was among the dead. They were trapped by the fast-moving fire along with their vehicles, two water tanker trucks and a few all-terrain vehicles, the spokeswoman, Nuria Lozano, said.

Forest Fires and Percolation
Blaze Applet Imagine a forest in which the trees were planted by scattering seeds randomly all over the ground. The trees are now full-grown, tall and green. Some trees stand alone; others are in clusters. The forest is peaceful on a quiet, windless day. Now imagine that all the trees along one edge of the forest are suddenly set on fire. As each tree burns, the fire spreads rapidly to the trees next to it. Every tree in the same cluster burns, as the fire spreads from each tree to its closest neighbors. But fire does not spread from one cluster to another, because it cannot jump across the space that separates clusters; there is no wind. If the trees are planted sparsely, with just a few trees scattered over a large area, chances are the fire will burn only a small number of trees and then die out; most of the forest will be safe. That's because sparsely planted trees, scattered randomly, tend to stand alone or in small clusters separated from one another. In contrast, suppose that the trees are planted very densely, with lots of trees crowded into a small area. Then the fire is likely to spread through nearly the entire forest. That's because densely planted trees, scattered randomly, tend to form large clusters. There may even be one large cluster that reaches from one side of the forest to the other. The trees in such a large cluster form a connected path that allows the fire to spread from tree to tree across the entire forest.

Introduction
This page intends to explain how to use the software to display a simulation of the two-dimensional forest-fire model on an X11 display. However, the code can also be used to do `real' simulations, and in fact some older versions of it have been used to perform the simulations in . If you intend to make extended use of it in this or a similar way, you might find the information provided here insufficient. In this case, just send me a message and I will give you the necessary information.
The forest-fire model simulated by this program is defined on a quadratic lattice. Any site can have two states: It can either be empty or occupied by a tree. A Monte-Carlo step consists in selecting a site and applying the following update rules to it:
a) If it is empty, grow a tree with probability p=1.

Welcome to the FOREST FIRE IN THE NORTHERN ROCKIES web site. Our goal is to provide a clearinghouse of scientific information regarding the historic role and present place of fire in western Montana and northern Idaho. Why? Because the forests in our neck of the woods are unique. Although they are superficially similar to those of the Southwest and other western lands, the ecological nuts and bolts of these habitats differ considerably. Historic patterns of fire occurrence and present challenges in fire management differ as well.
These pages house comprehensive reviews of topics - from fire history, to the ecological effects of fire, to the rationale behind forest restoration and rehabilitation - all based on information specific to forests of this region. We have tried to condense pertinent yet often complicated findings from local studies into a series of summaries accessible to folks at all levels of education and from all walks of life.
Fire has long been a fact of life in the Northern Rockies, and our forests have developed accordingly. Yet, to many people who call the region home, it's not clear what to make of wildfires. Certainly fires that threaten lives and property are not welcome in our backyards. But should fires ever be allowed to burn? If so, which ones and why? Knowledge of the long-standing relationship between fire and our forests is needed to objectively address these and related questions like:
