50-year recovery for French forest
By CNN's Charles Froggatt
Firefighters tackle a blaze outside Sainte-Maxime, southern France. Story Tools QUICKVOTE Forest fires sweeping southern Europe are:
A natural phenomenon A man-made disaster VIEW RESULTS FREIBURG, Germany Forest land around the French Riviera could take more than 50 years to recover after fires incinerated 8,000 hectares of the Var region, conservationists warn. Providing the area does not suffer further, the charred land could eventually regain the natural beauty that has made it such a tourist attraction but this will take at least half a century, says Professor Johann Goldammer, director of Global Fire Monitoring Center, based in Freiburg, Germany. For the forests to grow back, the area just north of the Mediterranean coast must avoid the nutrient stripping floods and summer fires that are becoming more common in the area because of the region's volatile climate, he told CNN. "Instead of a forest, it could become a secondary shrub," said Goldammer.

Fires break out in Balkan forest and fields amid heat wave
BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) Some 100 fires were burning Tuesday in forests and fields across Romania as a result of a heat wave, and the government urged local authorities and firefighters to provide reserves of water to prepare for more fires. In Croatia, fires, apparently caused by hot temperatures and drought, have been erupting along the coastline and in the hinterland almost daily for three weeks. And in Serbia, where temperatures climbed above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in several cities, hospitals reported a sharp increase in heat-related emergency cases and authorities urged people to stay indoors.

History

Wildland fires spread during the notorious Santa Ana weather; the air pollution is among the worst in the world; and a large and growing number of people exert increasing demands on wildlands for a safe place to live, for water, for recreation, and for scenic beauty. Because of its location in southern California, at the heart of these natural resource problems, the Forest Fire Laboratory provides unique opportunities to study a variety of related topics that have local, national, and international importance. Researchers at the Forest Fire Laboratory cooperate with other Forest Service research stations and Federal agencies, State and county agencies, universities, and private organizations.

Forest Fire in Canada
Fire plays an important role in most forest ecosystems in Canada. As these ecosystems have evolved over the last 10,000-15,000 years (since the glacial retreat at the end of the last ice age), fire has helped to maintain their health and diversity. From a socio-economic perspective fire can, however, have negative or undesirable effects on public health and safety, property, and natural resources. The challenge of managing fire in Canada is to find ways to effectively balance the positive ecological aspects of fire with the negative social and economic impacts. The Government of Canada, through Natural Resources Canada's Canadian Forest Service (CFS), makes an important contribution to fire management in two ways. First, the CFS has maintained an internationally recognized research program since the mid-1920s that has resulted in many innovations and new operational tools. Secondly, over the past two decades we have developed information systems that use advanced technologies (e.g., geographic information systems and remote sensing) to monitor and report on forest fire activity at a national scale. These activities have resulted in Canada becoming a world leader in forest fire research and management and have contributed to the overall safety and well-being of Canadians and to the sustainability of our forests.

Spanish Forest Fire Aftermath Surveyed By Envisat
The damage done to Spain's Guadalajara province by July's fierce forest fire has been measured from space by Envisat.
The four-day blaze began on 16 July, when a barbecue in pine woodland went out of control, spread by strong winds across a very dry landscape. Eleven volunteer firefighters died tackling the blaze, which at its height threatened to engulf the nearby villages of Selas and Ablanque. Firefighters succeeded in creating a fire-break to stop its spread, backed up by water-bombing aircraft.
A large forest fire that killed 11 people, took place in Guadalajara, Spain from the 16 to 19 July 2005. An estimation of burnt area was performed using the MERIS Full Resolution image acquired on the 24th of July 2005. A Matched Filtering analysis was applied on the layer stack obtained from the thirteen reflectance bands plus the Bottom of Atmosphere Vegetation Index (BOAVI) and Top of Atmosphere Vegetation Index (TOAVI) bands. Forest Fire Prevention
The Department of Natural Resources is responsible for wildfire protection on 12 million acres of private and state forest land. While fire can play a beneficial role in the forest ecosystem, it can be a destructive force that endangers our natural resources, our property, and even our lives. Our Fire Occurrence Map (it's about 300k if you want to view it) depicts fire occurrences over DNR protected lands from 1985-1994. The computer generated map shades a square mile of land for every fire that occurred in that area over the five-year period. As you view the map do you see that the most wildfires burn in the state's most populated areas? It's not that surprising if you look at the fire statistics for fires that have occurred on DNR protected lands. Over 85% of all fires were caused by people. People start fires, and people can prevent them. If you are a rural homeowner, or visit forested lands, there are things you can do to protect yourself, your forests, and even your home from wildfire. Most fires are caused by escaped debris fires. Most of these fires can be eliminated if
