By Alex Kirby
BBC News Online environment correspondent The bush fires raging across swathes of New South Wales are terrifying. For people in the areas ablaze they spell disruption at least, the prospect of losing their homes, and the possibility of death. For wild species, like kangaroos and koalas, death on a large scale is already a reality. Yet the fires may offer benefits to the forests in the longer term. No forest has ever existed without having to cope with periodic fires. The State Forests of New South Wales website says: "Fire is very much a natural part of many Australian ecosystems. "The Aborigines used fire on a regular basis, and had a profound influence on vegetation. Since the exclusion of Aboriginal burning, many areas of forest have undergone a change, particularly in the understorey. No trees without fire "Many areas which were once quite open and grassy now contain thickets of shrubs and vines."

Years after the fire, the damage becomes clear
By Alex Kirby
BBC News Online environment correspondent Fires in the Amazon forest are killing more trees than anyone had realised, according to UK scientists. They say the fires have a delayed effect, with trees often dying two or three years after they were damaged. This, they say, could double present estimates of the amount of vegetation lost and carbon dioxide released. This could become more important in the future if climatic patterns change significantly. Carbon emissions during severe El Nino events could be equivalent to 10-12.5% of annual global carbon emissions from fossil fuels
The UEA scientists
The scientists, from the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, UK, report their findings in Ecology Letters. They inspected all standing woody stems of 10 centimetres diameter or more in seven plots measuring 10 by 250 metres spread across 32 square kilometres of forest in the central Brazilian Amazon.

Forest fires cover Moscow in smoke
Cars pass by the Kremlin's towers, barely visible through thick smoke MOSCOW, Russia Doctors are urging Muscovites to stay indoors to avoid heavy white smoke from scores of forest fires stoked by a record heatwave. Hundreds of firefighters, using helicopters, planes and dozens of fire engines, are battling to control flames racing across about 300 hectares (740 acres) of woodland south of the Russian capital. At least 119 peat fires were ablaze in the Moscow region on Wednesday, up from 76 the day before, the Emergency Situations Ministry said. Normally only a handful of such fires are reported each summer. The army was helping firefighters and volunteers in Shatura, a town southeast of Moscow that has been particularly badly affected. Moscow's ambulance service said about 5,900 people suffering from the effects of the smog, expected to choke the city for another five days, had called for urgent help over the past 24 hours.

Deaths as forest fires hit Europe
Firefighters tackle a blaze outside Sainte-Maxime, southern France. Story Tools SAINTE-MAXIME, France At least five people have been killed and thousands evacuated as forest and brush fires hit a swathe of Europe from southeastern France to northern Portugal. In France, two towns were evacuated as the flames spread at a devastating pace, forcing tens of thousands of people to spend the night in temporary shelters. Officials speculated that the blazes about 30 broke out nearly simultaneously on Monday were criminal in origin. Firefighters found evidence of Molotov cocktails in the region, according to radio and television reports. By Tuesday, the local government in the Var region of France said the fires were under control, following a 24-hour battle by nearly 2,000 firefighters, Reuters reported. President Jacques Chirac warned that anyone who set fires in the tinderbox conditions would face "punishment of exceptional severity." Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, who toured the region, called the fires "an ecological massacre."

... (update 10.09.2005) Inforest Action INFOREST, as EU scientific and technical focal point for the new EU regulation "Forest Focus" and responsible for the creation of the European Forest Information and Communication Platform (EFICP), provides support to the relevant Commission services responsible for the protection and monitoring of European forests, and those services dealing with regional planning. INFOREST supports as well as the relevant services in the Member-States and Candidate Countries, which are already part of the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) scheme. For this purpose, INFOREST, in collaboration with DG ENV, has established a wide institutional network of civil protection and forest services in the Member States. The activities in INFOREST, which address Forest Focus, EFICS (European Forest Information and Communication System), and the 6th Environmental Action Plan, include the establishment of information systems and networks that enhance the collection, dissemination and access to reliable, harmonized, statistical and geo-referenced information on forests. This includes information on forest resources as well as forest condition data regarding the effect of atmospheric pollution and fires on forests. INFOREST coordinates the support to Forest Focus through the establishment of a Cross-Unit Working Group in which 5 Units of the IES are represented. INFOREST, as coordinator of this group, ensures the fulfillment of the commitments of the JRC towards other EC Services, the EEA, and other international research organizations. Ongoing competitive activities (e.g SPREAD, EON 2000+) are intended to serve as precursors towards new indirect actions.

European Forest Fire Information System - EFFIS The European Commission DG Joint Research Centre set up since 1999 a research group to work specifically on the development and implementation of advanced methods for the evaluation of forest fire risk and mapping of burnt areas at the European scale. These activities led to the development of the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). Since the year 2003 EFFIS is part of the Regulation (EC) No 2152/2003 (Forest Focus) of the European Council and Parliament on monitoring of forests and environmental interactions. All the EFFIS activities are coordinated with DG Environment to reach the final users, Civil Protection and Forest Services, in the Member States. EFFIS is aimed to provide relevant information for the protection of forests against fire in Europe addressing both pre-fire and post-fire conditions. On the pre-fire phase, EFFIS is focused both on the development of systems to provide forest fire risk forecast based on existing fire risk indices, and on the development of new integrated forest fire risk indicators (

Remote Sensing of Land/Forest Fires
Fire is traditionally used by the shifting cultivators and small-scale farmers as a tool for clearing land in the Southeast asian region. In recent years, fire has increasingly been used by large plantations to clear land and for conversion of forest into plantations and agricultural land. In time of drought, the fires may go out of control, resulting in severe damage to the forest and the surrounding region. The 1997/98 forest fire episode in Southeast Asia has attracted international attention. The fires which occurred primarily in the Sumatra and Borneo islands and aggravated by the drought due to the El Nino Southern Oscillation phenomenon, resulted in increased aerosol loading (smoke-haze) over the region. The economic damage resulting from the haze has been reported to be in the range of billions of dollars. Millions of hectares of land/forest have been burnt. The environmental impacts of the fires include the loss of biodiversity, loss of forests as carbon sinks and emission of greenhouse gases which may influence the global climatic systems. In response to this situation, daily fire monitoring operation of the region using full-resolution SPOT images has been carried out at CRISP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Singapore. CRISP has also acquired many SPOT, ERS and RADARSAT images of the areas affected by fires.

Debunking the "Healthy Forests Initiative"
The Healthy Forests Initiative (HFI) is President Bush’s response to the past year’s forest fires. The initiative is based on the false assumption that landscape-wide logging will decrease forest fires. This premise is contradicted by the general scientific consensus, which has found that logging can increase fire risk. This disconnect between what the administration says and what science says about logging and fire reveals the administration’s true goal which is to use the forest fire issue to cut the public out of the public lands management decision making process and to give logging companies virtually free access to our National Forests. The HFI, if fully enacted, would:

Abstract
There are about 9000 forest fires recorded annually in Canada. An average of 2.1 million hectares are burned every year; virtually all of it is boreal forest. Lightning accounts for about 85% all hectares burned annually, and people cause the rest. The fires caused by people are more numerous, but burn a smaller area than those ignited by lightning.
