Bush urges thinning to prevent forest fires
CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) President Bush Saturday said U.S. fire prevention strategy has been "shortsighted" and called for a greater emphasis on thinning and clearing of forest brush and trees to help prevent wildfires that have burnt the United States during this hot, dry summer. In his Saturday radio address, he said he is directing Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman and Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton to "speed up the process of thinning on public lands" and wants Congress to "pass legislation that will ensure that vital forest restoration projects are not tied up in courts forever." "As we work to put out the fires and bring relief to their victims, we also have a responsibility to prevent the devastation that can be caused by future fires," Bush said. "For too long, America's fire prevention strategy has been shortsighted." Federal and state officials, joined by some environmentalists and academics, increasingly advocate deliberately setting fires in wild areas to restore ecosystems and prevent wildfires from raging out of control. Fires are part of the natural life cycle of forests, they argue, and help maintain a broader diversity of habitats for wildlife. After decades of fire suppression and Smokey Bear, the government now embraces "prescribed fire" as a key tool in managing the nation's forests.

The four-day blaze began on 16 July, when a barbecue in pine woodland went out of control, spread by strong winds across a very dry landscape. Eleven volunteer firefighters died tackling the blaze, which at its height threatened to engulf the nearby villages of Selas and Ablanque. Firefighters succeeded in creating a fire-break to stop its spread, backed up by water-bombing aircraft. A 24 July MERIS Full Resolution mode image with a spatial resolution of 300 meters (984 feet) was processed to reveal burned areas by a team led by Dr. Federico Gonzalez-Alonso, head of the Madrid-based Laboratorio de Teledeteccion (Remote-sensing Laboratory) of the Instituto Nacional de Investigacion y Tecnologia Agraria y Alimentaria (National Institute for Agriculture, Food Research and Technology or INIA). A follow-on to MERIS is planned as payload for the GMES-1 spacecraft, intended to support operational GMES services into the next decade.

Forest Fires
Canada's forest fire season usually starts as early as April, with grass fires that scorch the landscape. Then the season moves into high gear with the first round of forest fires in May and June, with more to come in the dry summer months.
Fighting fires
During those six months, an entire industry comes alive. Provincial governments and Parks Canada hire and train hundreds of firefighters who spend the summer doing the annual battle with fire.
Many are college and university students who need a job. Others are highly trained firefighters who have gone to school to learn the intricacies of fire behaviour and suppression.
They may spend weeks living in fire camps and spend long, hard hours fighting stubborn blazes that will only get worse because of high winds. They will be transported to other provinces to reinforce firefighters worn down by a blaze that won't be controlled.

Northwestern Ontario records 57 new forest fires
Last Updated Mon, 08 Aug 2005 13:18:36 EDT CBC News A total of 57 new forest fires came to life in northwestern Ontario over the weekend, and provincial officials expect to be fighting 20 more by the end of Monday. The culprit is the weather, which is aggravating the threat in forests parched by hot, dry weather over the past few weeks. "Lightning is the main cause of fires in this part of Ontario at this time of year," fire information officer Deb MacLean told CBC.ca. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources employee said about 180 out-of-province firefighters and support staff have been sent from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories to help tackle about 130 blazes that are now burning in Ontario. The biggest fire, called Thunder Bay 57, is burning out of control on 4,000 hectares about 100 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay.

Forest Fires
Forest fires can endanger homes and wildlife and take an immense human and financial toll to control. Yet, forest fires are natural and serve an important function in ecosystems. Most tree species evolved to take advantage of fire, and periodic fires contribute to forest health. In the absence of human settlement, fires often move through the forest burning lower branches and clearing dead wood from forest floor. Clearing the clutter from a forest floor, as one site puts it, "kick-starts regeneration by providing ideal growing conditions." It also improves the forest floor as habitat for many species that prefer relatively open spaces to a dense thicket of brush and dead branches. Further, forests in which fires are suppressed often burn much hotter and more dangerously when a serious fire finally breaks out. But it is understandable for people who live near forests and who own forest land to want their property, and their lives, protected from the ravages of fire so these are particularly difficult tradeoffs to make.
