Also, please use the Navigation Guide to the right to learn more about our program, forensic science, and other opportunities at Eastern Kentucky University. History The Forensic Science Program at Eastern Kentucky University was established in 1974 by Dr. Robert E. Fraas, who served as the program director until undergoing transition retirement in Summer 2003. During this time, the program has gained a national reputation for excellence in undergraduate education in Forensic Science. We now have over 200 majors from more than 20 states and two foreign countries. In the years from 1997-2003, an average of 15 people graduated from the program each year. The program has been developed to offer two options for a B.S. Forensic Science: Chemistry and Biology. The Chemistry Option is geared toward preparing the student for work in most sections of the forensic laboratory, including trace, drugs, arson, and toxicology. The Biology Option prepares the student for work with DNA. Once again, the links at the right enable on to see the curriculum for these two options, and a brief description of the forensic science courses we offer.

Any type of organism can be identified by examination of DNA sequences unique to that species. Identifying individuals within a species is less precise at this time, although when DNA sequencing technologies progress farther, direct comparison of very large DNA segments, and possibly even whole genomes, will become feasible and practical and will allow precise individual identification.
