What is a forensic scientist?

A forensic scientist examines physical evidence and then testifies about the results of their examination in court. They are in fact defined by the expectation that they may give expert testimony about their examinations and further provide interpretations or opinions regarding the results. As explained in Thornton "Forensic" comes to us from the Latin forensus , meaning "of the forum." In Ancient Rome, the forum was where governmental debates were held, but it was also where trials were held. It was the courthouse. So forensic science has come to mean the application of the natural and physical sciences to the resolution of conflicts within a legal setting.
The single feature that distinguishes forensic scientists from any other scientist is the certain expectation that they will appear in court and testify to their findings and offer an opinion as to the significance of those findings. The forensic scientist will testify not only to what things are, but to what things mean. Forensic science is science exercised on behalf of the law in the just resolution of conflict. A true forensic scientist is not a policeman, nor are they partial about the outcome of their examinations. They are objective investigators of fact. Subsequently, a forensic scientist may work in a state run crime lab, but many work in private practice.

It is a specialization within the overall medical/scientific field. Those involved in criminalistics are experts in analyzing all types of physical evidence that might provide circumstantial evidence in the trial of a case. Crime scene investigation involves the examination of this evidence along with the use of scientific methods and deductive reasoning to gain an understanding of the events surrounding a crime. Forensic science as a whole covers all aspects of the process whereby investigators use dental psychological biological chemical , and mechanical techniques to determine the causes of a person's death, disability, injury or disease. It is in general a highly technical field, and the acquisition of a graduate degree can be of great assistance in learning in-depth forensic techniques as well as advancing in the field.

The Laboratory s forensic science Center was established in 1991, Following isan update on activities at the forensic science Center since early 1994.

FOR MOST PEOPLE, "forensic science" means cops and fingerprints and DNA analysis. All of that is still true, but these days forensic science encompasses much more. Some "whodunits" are more complicated and can involve an international cast of characters. Forensic science now also is used to verify and monitor compliance with such international agreements as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Chemical Weapons Convention, and to learn whether a country is developing a clandestine nuclear weapons program.
The Laboratory's Forensic Science Center was established in 1991, and in its short life has become a leader in law enforcement, national security, defense, and intelligence applications. Using sophisticated analytical equipment, experts in organic, inorganic, and biological chemistry can determine the composition and often the source of the most minute samples of material. Lasers are also being used to "interrogate," or examine, a variety of materials.
What You See Is What You Get
By combining three technologies into a single systeman ion trap mass spectrometer for analysis, a high-powered microscope for viewing, and a laser for ionizing samplesthe Center has created something entirely new for forensic analysis: imaging laser-ablation mass spectroscopy. Conceived in 1994 and still being refined, this new process allows considerably more accuracy in analyzing samples than standard mass spectroscopy.

"The forensic sciences refer to a group of subspecialties in science and medicine that apply their principles and methods to legal questions of a criminal or civil nature" ( Nash and Faraino 1999, p.59 ). Forensic science includes, but is not limited to, pathologists, psychiatrists, odontologists, toxicologists, molecular biologists, entomologists, and criminalists. Practitioners are finding themselves increasingly in demand in the courtroom as expert witnesses. With the advent of shows such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation , forensic science sites on the Web have multiplied exponentially. Sites are produced by government and professional organizations and forensic specialists, as well as by forensic scientist aspirants.
