You are in: Forensic Science and Drug Monitoring Home Welcome Qualifications The Course ... Welcome to Forensic Science and Drug Monitoring Home Page The forensic scientist plays an important role in the community through the provision of expert evidence in courts of law. The outcome of many civil and criminal cases is influenced by scientific findings and their interpretation. As an expert witness, the forensic scientist must demonstrate professional knowledge and competence, as well as personal integrity. The scientist thus requires formal academic qualifications before embarking on a career in forensic science. Forensic science covers a wide range of disciplines, many of which are based on chemistry. As their career progresses, forensic scientists often develop specialisms, but a broad knowledge of forensic science is a prerequisite.

Introduction
Ontario's Centre of Forensic Sciences (CFS) is one of the most extensive forensic science facilities in North America. The central laboratory is located in Toronto, the Northern Regional Laboratory (NRL) in Sault Ste. Marie. The two laboratories conduct scientific investigations in cases involving injury or death in unusual circumstances and in crimes against persons or property. Highly specialized forensic examination and analysis are conducted in the following areas:
  • biology; chemistry; documents and photoanalysis; electronics firearms and toolmarks; toxicology.
Independent scientific laboratory services support the administration of justice and public safety programs across the province. Law enforcement officers, crown attorneys, defence counsel, coroners, pathologists and other official investigative agencies make use of CFS services.

Forensic Science Activities Fingerprinting Shoe Prints Lip Prints Handwriting analysis ... Chromatography Fingerprinting Have students read the handout Fingerprinting Background Information . Divide the class into groups of 4-5 students. Give each student a sheet where they can record their group's fingerprints. The easiest way to record fingerprints is to have students rub an area on a piece of paper with a pencil. The students then rub their fingers over the graphite on the paper. Next, apply a small piece of tape to the finger, lift and place the tape on the sheet of paper. You will then have a record of each student's fingerprints. You may also place the tape on a sheet of overhead projector film and then you can project the image of a fingerprint for the entire class to see. Make a copy of the fingerprinting record sheet for each group so that you may use it in this activity and future crimes. Choose one set of fingerprints to be those of the culprit in each case the students solve involving fingerprints. The case: Yesterday, someone put salt in the sugar bowl on the teacher's table in the lunchroom. Later in the day a large jar containing a mysterious white substance was found stashed behind the curtain on the stage. The substance was later determined to be salt. Upon investigation, a set of fingerprints was found on the jar. Your job is to examine the fingerprints and decide if anyone in your class is the culprit in this crime..

Buel E, Schwartz MB, LaFountain MJ
Abstract
Capillary electrophoresis is a relatively new technology for the forensic analysis of STRs, and may be an excellent alternative to traditional gel-based methods. Eighty samples, obtained from six different laboratories which had previously analyzed the samples using a variety of gel-based methods, were reanalyzed by CE. It was determined that CE could obtain the same allelic designation as that reported by the comparison laboratory. Seven different loci employing two separate multiplex amplifications were used for the comparison study. One basepair resolution and average standard deviations within the range of 0.075 to 0.117 basepairs were observed.

spotlight /forensic Forensic Science Summary Legislation Publications Programs Related Resources Forensic Science "Robert Melias became the first person convicted of a crime in England on the basis of DNA evidence in 1987" ( Convicted by Juries, Exonerated by Science: Case Studies in the Use of DNA Evidence to Establish Innocence After Trial , National Institute of Justice, 1996). Summary The extensive use of biological evidence to identify victims and offenders has had a significant bearing, in recent years, on the course of law enforcement investigations, criminal court proceedings, and victim service provider issues. DNA evidence arguably has become the most well-known type of forensic evidence, probably because it can be uniquely identifying and because it is the genetic blueprint of the human body. For these reasons, DNA evidence has become a highly influential piece of the crime puzzle ( The Future of Forensic DNA Testing: Predictions of the Research and Development Working Group , National Institute of Justice, 2000).
