These web pages were created to provide the layperson with an easy understanding of what forensic science entails. With a large number of homepages on the net for forensic organizations, no one seems to have taken the time to explain the basics or to make them easily understood. Below, you will find brief explanations of some of the main disciplines within Forensic Science. Click on the icon to see a more in-depth explanation of that topic. The Forensic Icon Bar at the top of each page is an image map, linking directly to any of the other subject pages and to this index page. What is Forensic Science? Forensic Science is any aspect of science as it relates to the law. Typically, it includes the disciplines listed below, but just about any area of science could be called into question in a court of law. Firearms and Toolmark Identification. Firearms examination involves the identifying characteristics between firearm and projectile, projectile and target. Typically, this includes matching bullets to the gun that fired them. Toolmark identification involves the identifying characteristics between tools, such as a pry bar, and the object on which it is used, such as a door frame. Also included in the category are explosives and imprint evidence. Forensic Psychiatry and Profiling.

Advice about a Career in Forensic Science
Comments by Dale Nute
Adjunct Faculty,
Florida State University
Recognizing that free advice is worth what you pay for it, the following is provided free of charge. It is based on my experience and therefore is somewhat limited and even if it were more expansive, it all may change tomorrow anyway. With that said, let's get started. A major caution before we begin. Forensic scientists work in the justice system. If you have a criminal record, you have virtually no chance of getting a job as a forensic scientist. If you use drugs (and in Miami, even tobacco) you usually can forget it. Life ain't fair! There are lots of good jobs that overlook youthful indiscretions but the justice system does not. It all begins with what you want to do. There are six general areas of practice (any I've left out I don't know enough about to give even free advice). If you know that you are interested in one of the areas, click on it and go directly to that discussion.

A Career In Forensic Science
What is Forensic Science?

In civil cases forensic scientists may become involved in some of the same sorts of examinations and analyses but directed to resolving disputes as to, for example, the cause of a fire or a road accident for which damages are being claimed.
Forensic scientists can appear for either side - prosecution or defence in criminal matters, and plaintiff or defendant in civil ones. They tend to present their findings and opinions in written form either as formal statements of evidence or reports. Sometimes they are required to attend court to give their evidence in person.
Forensic Medicine and Forensic Dentistry
By analogy, this is the application of medical and dental knowledge to legal problems. Forensic medical examiners, who deal with the living and forensic pathologists, who deal with the dead, are qualified medical practitioners who, having completed their training as doctors, choose to specialise in either field. Forensic odontologists are qualified dentists who have undergone additional training and who provide expert evidence on dentistry.
Scientific Support within the Police Forces
Civilians are now employed by many police forces to provide a variety of technical services. These include photography, the collection and comparison of fingerprints, vehicle examination and the detailed examination of scenes of crime. Scene examiners, often referred to as SOCOs (Scenes of Crime Officers), will normally have some scientific training.
