Key Points
  • Private military companies (PMCs), performing an array of security tasks for a variety of clients, have proliferated. In pursuing its war on terrorism, the Pentagon is increasingly relying on the services of PMCs, as overseas training programs expand.
When the Soviet Union collapsed, U.S. forces were downsized, but they were not sufficiently reorganized to meet the demands of regional and ethnic conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, and new missions such as counternarcotics and counterterrorism. In scrambling to meet more requirements with fewer personnel in a more competitive labor market, the U.S. government has turned to private contractors to carry out logistical support, site security, foreign military training, observation missions, and other functions. Today, at least 35 PMCs are based in the United States. Although older companies such as Vinnell, SAIC, and Cubic have expanded into new services, some of the highest profile firms (including MPRI, which L-3 Communications purchased in 2000) are products of the post-cold war. One of biggest growth areas for these companies has been in providing military training. During the 1990s, U.S. private firms trained militaries in more than 42 countries. For instance:

Well folks, that time in my life has finally arrived; I have finally graduated and found employment. Due to these new circumstances, IntellNet has moved with me, hence this downtime. I plan on bringing the site back, however I am still looking for a colocation facility. I would like to find a friendly organization willing to place our server in their facility for little or no charge, however I am accepting proposals for colo services. I would prefer a facility in Virginia, however I would not rule out other parts of the country. We have a 2u Dell Poweredge server and would look for minimal human support and some sort of tape backup procedures.
That said, please email any proposals to me.
I do wish to thank the very awesome folks at Tundra Hosting for hosting this temporary page for me. They have great hosting packages for those wishing to create a presence on the internet, from personal pages to e-commerce sites. Please check them out while I go look for a new home for your beloved IntellNet :-) and if you are a colo facility, please drop me a line.

With U.S. special forces now participating in a ground war in Afghanistan, FRONTLINE updates this 1998 investigation of a United Nations peacekeeping mission gone awry. On October 3, 1993, elite units of U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force were pinned down on the streets of Mogadishu by forces of the Somali warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid. Seventeen hours later, eighteen American soldiers were dead and seventy-five lay wounded. The Rangers and Delta Force are now fighting in Afghanistan. FRONTLINE investigates new charges that Osama bin Laden trained and supported the Somali fighters responsible for the attack and explores the lessons learned by the U.S. military. published sept. 1998

Gerhard Schroeder's Minority Report and Its Consequences
Slavoj Zizek.
Frankfurter Rundschau 1/03.
So while the US presents its domination over other sovereign states as grounded in a benevolent paternalism which takes into account the interests of other states, it reserves for itself the ultimate right to DEFINE its allies' "true" interests. The logic is thus clearly formulated: even the pretense of a neutral international law is abandoned, since, when the US perceive a potential threat, they formally ask their allies to support them, but the allies' agreement is optional, the underlying message is always "we will do it with or without you," i.e. you are free to agree with, but not free to disagree — the old paradox of the forced choice is reproduced here, the freedom to make a choice on condition that one makes the right choice. The US displeasure of Gerhard Schroeder in September 2002, when he won the elections with his firm stance against the American military intervention in Irak, was a displeasure at the fact that Schroeder did what a normal politician in a functioning democracy and a leader of a sovereign state does — while agreeing that the Iraqi regime is a threat, he simply articulated his disagreement with the way the US government proposed to deal with this threat, thereby stating an opinion shared not only by many other states, but also by a considerable percentage of American people and congressmen. Schroeder was thus the first to get the full taste of the Bush doctrine — and, to pursue the homology even further, was his disagreement with the US plans to preventively attack Iraq not precisely a kind of real-life "minority report," signaling his disagreement with the way others saw the future?

McCain expresses support and pride for Bush's candidacy
Sen. John McCain of Arizona focused on a vision for America's role in the world during his speech Tuesday night in Philadelphia. By Ian Christopher McCaleb and Mike Ferullo/CNN PHILADELPHIA (CNN) Arizona Sen. John McCain told attendees at the second evening of the 2000 Republican Convention on Tuesday that he believes Texas Gov. George W. Bush possesses the combination of ideals and abilities needed to lead the nation forward toward opportunity, coupled with dignity. "I say to all Americans, Republican, Democrat or independent, if you believe America deserves leaders with a purpose more ennobling than expediency and opportunism, then vote for Governor Bush," McCain said as he delivered Tuesday night's central address. The Republican Party steered the second night of its 2000 convention further away from the bellicose partisan displays that have characterized conventions past, to focus on national strength, gratitude to the nation's war veterans, and honor for the party's living former chief executives.

var loc = "../../"; "Give War a Chance" is the story of two American leaders whose lives and experiences reflect the Vietnam generation's conflicting views about the use of America's military might. It is the story of Richard Holbrooke, U.N. Ambassador-nominee, architect of the 1995 Bosnian peace accords, and ret. Admiral Leighton "Snuffy" Smith, a Vietnam war hero who became NATO's commander in Bosnia and whose mission was to enforce the Bosnia peace. Give War A Chance
FRONTLINE explores the bitter divide between military and civilian attitudes about where, when, and why America employs military force. In examining the gulf between what American diplomats want and what the military is prepared to deliver, correspondent Peter J. Boyer follows the inevitable collision from Vietnam to the Balkans between diplomat Richard Holbrooke and Admiral Leighton Smith. Their careers, and ultimate clash, represent the most vivid example of this critical foreign policy dilemma
Special reports on FRONTLINE's web site include one examining the evolution of the doctrine on the use of military force and, a chronology of significant U.S. military interventions over the past 30 years. Also published on the site is an analysis of the new kind of diplomacy'nation-building' backed by military might. Several top experts debate the pros and cons. The site also offers brief biographies of Holbrooke and Smith, parallel chronologies of their lives and careers, and, a selection of key readings on the issues examined in the FRONTLINE broadcast.
