Rock Island Arsenal
Museum
The Rock Island Arsenal Museum was established in 1905, making it the second oldest U.S. Army museum after West Point. The museum has been closed down twice, during W.W. I and W.W. II, in order to create more space for manufacturing. It has been in its present location since 1948. In 1959, the museum's name was changed to the John M. Browning Memorial Museum. In 1986, the museum's name was changed back to the Rock Island Arsenal Museum. This was done in order to better represent the museum's primary purpose, which is to collect, preserve, and display the history of Rock Island Arsenal and Arsenal Island. Rock Island Arsenal is an active U.S. Army factory, which manufactures ordnance and equipment for the Armed Forces. It is located on Arsenal Island in the Mississippi River. The Arsenal Museum interprets the history of Arsenal Island to include the building of Fort Armstrong in 1816, the Black Hawk War, the Confederate Prison Camp 1863-1865, and the establishment of the Arsenal in 1862. The theme of the Museum is People, Processes, and Products. The exhibits depict the people involved in the Island's history, the manufacturing processes used at the Arsenal, and the equipment that the Arsenal has produced. Also, included at the museum is an extensive collection of military firearms, both foreign and domestic. Over 1100 weapons are currently on display.

Digger History Medals of interest to Australians
  • The process of awarding orders, decorations, medals for heroism, medals for exemplary service, medals for serving in a campaign and medals for long service is a well established and growing practice. Pick the time period or country that interests you from the list below and have fun . . .
Victoria Cross Sub category index
Instituted in 1890, the Liyakat Medal became the basic military decoration of the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) until the end of the First World War. It was issued in gold or silver. Awards made during this war only bore a ribbon clasp of crossed sabers with the year 1333 (1915) in the same metal as the medal. Medal for the China War (Boxer Rebellion)
  • There is a difference between "bars" and "clasps" although sometimes the two get mixed up. Supporting "bars" are another thing altogether. A bar represents the award of another medal of the same type. As wearing 2 or more identical medals would look silly a bar is worn on the riband of the medal to indicate the second award.

How can some Muslims preach peace and others holy war? Learn about the tenets of the world's fastest-growing religion. The scarring images. The minute-by-minute accounts. The stories of heroism and death. The America that is forever changed. On Sept. 12, the day after our sense of security was shattered, reporter Alex Tizon and photographer Alan Berner ventured out to chronicle what connects us, and what keeps us apart in their "Crossing America" series. Now, we continue our journey in a collection of reported "postcards."
