ICT4LT Module 2.4
Using concordance programs in the modern foreign languages classroom
This is a very large module: around 50 pages. Please wait for it to load completely; it may take several minutes.
Contents
Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce language teachers to the use of concordances and concordance programs in the modern foreign languages classroom. Concordancing is part of corpus linguistics Module 3.4 Section 2.2 of this module includes a brief introduction to corpus linguistics.
Authors of this module
With an introduction by Graham Davies, Thames Valley University, UK.
Introduction by Graham Davies
Collins Cobuild English Dictionary , is: Fun with Texts and adapted for the 1992 DOS version by Marco Bruzzone. Nowadays I often use a concordancer to check my own writing style. It picks up my over-frequent use of certain words, and it is particularly helpful when used in conjunction with a thesaurus. A thesaurus never gives you enough authentic examples of usage to tell you how to use a word with which you are unfamiliar, but a concordancer does - providing you have a decent corpus of authentic texts: see Activity 12 in Section 4.

Enrollments nationwide have risen 4.8% since 1995, reversing a 3.8% decline between 1990 and 1995. Within the UC system, this growth has been even more dramatic, with enrollments in foreign language courses up by 10.8% between 1994 and 1998. THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Area teachers are learning some new lessons themselves, as more non-English- speaking students attend schools in the Washington metropolitan area.
The growing number of immigrants and U.S. citizens who are not fluent in English has teachers trying to figure out how they can teach subjects to children who may be having trouble understanding them. Currently, schools in Maryland and the District teach students who combined speak more than 200 foreign languages.
More than 11,000 of 140,000 students in Montgomery County are enrolled in the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. Those students come from more than 160 countries, and they speak more than 120 languages.
Nearly 16,000 of 130,000 students in Prince George's County schools speak about 130 languages.
In the District, more than 8,000 of the school system's estimated 67,000 students are enrolled in the city's bilingual education program. Those students speak 113 different languages.

Primaries to teach languages
Shake-up means courses will start from age of seven
Rebecca Smithers, education correspondent
Tuesday February 12, 2002
The Guardian

The government will today set out details of a 10-year strategy to improve language teaching in state schools in England and Wales which will include giving every seven-year-old the opportunity to learn a modern foreign language. Sensitive to the expected criticism over proposals in an education green paper today to allow pupils to drop languages at the age of 14, ministers want to underline the importance of learning them in primary school.
