Combined Major Courses with TEFL
TEFL Schemes
We offer five schemes which give background training in the teaching of English as a foreign language (TEFL). These schemes are offered jointly by the Department of Linguistics and Modern English Language and the Department of European Languages and Cultures. The five schemes are:
  • English Language and TEFL French and TEFL German and TEFL Spanish and TEFL Italian and TEFL
These schemes will be particularly attractive to students considering the possibility of a career in foreign language teaching. Although the schemes focus on the teaching of English, they will provide basic background for anyone wishing to become a teacher of any foreign language. The French, German, Spanish and Italian schemes will also be valuable to students planning to teach English during their year abroad; the programmes will provide preparation for that teaching, and will build on it during the final degree year. Minors should note that you may take Ling 270 as a course within your degree scheme. Details of these programmes are given below.

New Directions in Foreign Language Learning: Faculty Development at the University of South Carolina Jessamine Cooke-Plagwitz Academic Director, Mimms Language Learning Center University of South Carolina Columbia, SC 29208 jplagwitz@sc.edu Abstract: Foreign language instructors are some of the most innovative teachers in education today, and educational institutions worldwide are encouraging their foreign-language faculty to increase their use of technology in the classroom. To that end, The University of South Carolina has created a new role for the Academic Director of its Foreign Language Learning Center. The Director oversees a Faculty Development Center for faculty interested in incorporating technology into their curricula. The Center provides an area where interested faculty can develop courseware, design and maintain Web pages, work with audio and video, and simply experiment with instructional technology in a non-threatening environment. In addition, the Center offers a series of IT workshops geared specifically towards foreign-language faculty. This article outlines the nature of the Center’s faculty development efforts.

This tool includes two kinds of resources. The first focuses on specific topics, and includes ready-made sets of activities relevant to these topics. In this category we currently provide a resource called "Languages of the World: An Enrichment Unit", which is meant to add depth to the study of language, put languages in context, promote diversity awareness, and touch upon major issues in linguistics and language learning. The activities are intended for students of foreign languages at the high school or college level.
The second kind is a loose collection of links to the Web pages of several organizations and professionals in the field that teachers might find useful in that they contain a great deal of information and links to other sites that we chose not to repeat on our site. http://www.ksu.edu/mlangs/missionstatement.html
Our Mission Overview of the Department: The Department of Modern Languages plays a multi-faceted, pivotal role within the missions of the University, the College and the community by providing opportunities for the development of the skills and knowledge that help define an educated person in the new millennium. Citizens of our state and nation must be prepared to meet the economic and political challenges inherent in a linguistically complex, diverse international community. Put simply, it is increasingly important in today's world for Kansans (and all U.S. citizens) to be able to communicate in a foreign language and to be sensitive to and appreciative of the cultural diversity within and outside of our own borders. The Department of Modern Languages provides opportunities, training and expertise at several levels to allow students to gain such expertise. Indeed, the fact that the majority of Modern Languages majors chooses to pursue double majors confirms the desirability of integrating foreign language communication skills and an appreciation of cultural diversity into career and life goals. The Department of Modern Languages is in a unique position to promote the University's strategic planning themes of expanding international programs and muliculturalism. Finally, the Department is committed to improving foreign language instruction in the State of Kansas in the face of a predicted serious shortage of language teachers at the secondary level, and to incorporating advances in technology into language teaching and learning. A rapidly growing graduate program and the successful implementation of two teacher training institutes (supported by federal grants) attest to the Department's belief that we can be effective in our efforts to work with teachers statewide and regionally to enhance the articulation of foreign language programs.

(Written 2002) UNFORTUNATELY .. I have to inform you that this School is not a VALID OPTION for ESL'ers. There are countless numbers of individuals who have been "screwed" by Chang Chun who brings teachers to Zibo to teach illegally on F business visas. He infact has no authority in China to employ "Foreign Experts" (as we are known as by the Govt), and cannot provide the legal work visas or resident permits needed to teach in China. China is a wonderful country with many, many generous, kind people .. just make sure your host is one of them and NOT in it just for the money they earn from your teaching services.
