Chosen as Richard Nixon's vice president after the resignation of Spiro Agnew. Later succeeded Nixon as president when he resigned. First person ever to hold the office of U.S. president without the vote of the people involved. Was sworn in as Vice-President on 6 December 1973, after the resignation of then Vice-President Spiro Agnew. Served in the House of Representatives from 1949-1973. In 1963, President Johnson appointed Ford to the Warren Commission, which investigated the assassination of President Kennedy. Ford is the last living member of that Commission. He pardoned President Nixon for his involvement in Watergate, which was largely unpopular with the American public. Many believe the pardon cost Ford the 1976 election, but Ford maintains that it was the right thing to do for the good of the country. Even Senator

(Portrait) Gerald Ford became President after Richard Nixon resigned in August 1974. Ford's experience as a member of the intelligence subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee gave him a deep appreciation of the value of intelligence. Fundamental changes in the way CIA operated occurred during the Ford administration. Congressional oversight of CIA and its operations tightened as a result of the Church Committee hearings in 1975, which investigated alleged CIA misconduct.
"IN THE WORLD IN WHICH WE live, beset by continuing threats to our national security, it is vital that we maintain an effective intelligence and counterintelligence capability. This capability is fundamental in providing the safeguards that protect our national interests and help avert armed conflict. The Central Intelligence Agency has had a notable record of many successes in this field, but by the nature of its operations, such successes and achievements cannot be divulged publicly. "It is essential in this republic that we meet our security requirements and at the same time avoid impairing our democratic institutions and fundamental freedoms. Intelligence activities must be conducted consistently with both objectives."

The Secrets of Gerald Ford's Success ... 30 Years After he Became President It's Time to Consider What Made Him Tick
    By Yanek Mieczkowski
Mr. Mieczkowski is an associate professor of history at Dowling College in Oakdale, NY. His book on the Ford presidency, Gerald Ford and the Challenges of the 1970s, will be published next year by the University Press of Kentucky. August 9, 2004 marks the thirtieth anniversary of Gerald Ford's inauguration as president. Ford arrived at the White House through unique circumstances, not only by Richard Nixon's resignation, but also because he owed his elevation to the presidency largely to his character. In the atmosphere of moral turpitude surrounding Vice President Spiro Agnew's resignation and the Watergate scandal, congressmen wanted a new vice president with unblemished character, speculating that he might someday become president. Feeling burned by Watergate, the public, Congress, and the media became vigilant over political behavior, and one reason that Ford survived vigorous scrutiny and held the country together during his two and a half year presidency was through his integrity. Over the years, most notably after Bill Clinton's impeachment, questions about presidential character have sometimes resurfaced; the issue will always resonate, especially in an election year. Some of Ford's fundamental traits served him well during his almost three decades in public life, and they stand as refreshing reminders in today's political climate, which mirrors the polarization of the 1970s. Many observers found Ford's personality bland and uninspiring. Yet that view was simplistic; no one arrives at the Oval Office devoid of personality and values. A glimpse into Ford's character shows facets that were a road map for leadership; they also recall decent, homespun traits increasingly invisible in today's leaders.

President Gerald Ford Celebrates 90th Birthday AgeVenture News Service 7/12/2003 U.S. Senator Larry Craig (R-Idaho), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, sent birthday greetings today to former U.S. President Gerald Ford, who will turn 90 years old on July 14, 2003 (photo: President Ford with Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney 1975). “As Chairman of the Senate’s Special Committee on Aging, I’m pleased to extend to President Ford a hearty happy birthday greeting as he turns 90,” Senator Craig said. “President Ford’s long life is part of growing trend – people are living longer and longer lives and in the coming decades we will see more than a million people who are 90 or older living in the United States. It’s a great time to be alive.”
“President Ford brought a healing influence to this nation which was wounded by Watergate and still troubled by war in Vietnam. His dignity, grace and honor helped bring a peaceful closure to those difficult days,” Craig said. Although it has been nearly 30 years since he led the nation, Ford’s legacy lives on as those who served in his administration. Vice President Dick Cheney served as Ford’s Chief of Staff, and as did Donald Rumsfeld, who now serves as Secretary of Defense. Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan served as chairman of the President Ford’s Council of Economic Advisors.
President Gerald R. Ford was born on July 14, 1913 at Omaha, Nebraska and was originally given the name Leslie Lynch King, Jr. His parents separated just two weeks after he was born and in 1917 his mother married Gerald R. Ford, and they soon began calling her child Gerald R. Ford, Jr., although his name was not legally changed until he was 22 years old.

He said it himself: "I'm a Ford, not a Lincoln."
After the Watergate scandal and the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974, a Ford seemed to be just what the country needed a return to normalcy.
Gerald Rudolph Ford was sworn in as the 38th President of the United States on August 9, 1974, in the wake of Watergate. On that day, he said, "Our long national nightmare is over. Our constitution works. Our great republic is a government of laws and not of men."
One month later, on September 8, 1974, President Ford issued an unconditional pardon for Nixon. The widely unpopular decision brought a quick end to his honeymoon with the American public. Some experts say that Ford's credibility was so damaged that it crippled any chance for re-election in 1976 when Jimmy Carter defeated him. The loss ended Ford's political career, one that had lasted more than three decades.

Writings A Time to Heal Consulting Editor Biography: Early Years Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. was, in many ways, the perfect choice to restore America's broken confidence after Richard Nixon. Straightforward and honest, a man of recognized decency, he traced his personal qualities back to his Midwestern childhood. Raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, by his mother and stepfather, Ford didn't learn that he was adopted until he was almost fifteen. "My stepfather was a magnificent person," he remembered, "and my mother equally wonderful. So I couldn't have written a better prescription for a superb family upbringing." Ford grew up to become an outstanding football player, serving as captain of his high school team, then playing all through his years at the University of Michigan. At Yale University, where he attended law school, he worked on the side as a football coach. When he returned home at the end of World War II, in which he served overseas as a navy combat officer, it was with a new feeling for public service. "I came back a converted internationalist," he recalled, "and of course our congressman at that time was an avowed, dedicated isolationist. And I thought he ought to be replaced. Nobody thought I could win. I ended up winning two to one."

79. Character Above All: Gerald Ford Essay
Essay provides a brief look at the circumstances and events that molded the president's character.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/character/essays/ford.html
GERALD R. FORD
Excerpted from an essay by James Cannon Gerald R. Ford became President not because he was popular with the American public, not because he campaigned for the job, but because of his character. More than any other president of this century, Ford was chosen for his integrity and trustworthiness; his peers in Congress put him in the White House because he told the truth and kept his word. He was nominated for Vice President after Spiro Agnew was forced to resign to avoid indictment for accepting bribes. Ford was confirmed by a House and Senate that expected him to replace a President who was also facing indictment for crimes...... Ford personified what Nixon was not. Ford was honest. He could be trusted. Throughout twenty-five years in the House of Representatives, Ford had proved himself to be a man of integrity. It was for that integrity that the highest powers of Congress, Democratic and Republican, chose Ford to be Vice President, knowing that Nixon's presidency was doomed...... Surely character begins at home, and in Ford's case we know for certain that it began with his mother.
