BILL BROWN, The Material Unconscious: American Amusement, Stephen Crane, and the Economies of Play (Cambridge: Harvard UP, 1996), pp. 384, $22.95. At first glance, The Material Unconscious would seem to fit neatly enough into such a program. Introducing his method via a barometer mentioned fleetingly in Flaubert's story "Un coeur simple," Brown shows that previous historicist readings fixate on the object only to leave its specificity behind, rapidly working it up into an example of some larger formation (such as the rise of scientific measurement). In marked contrast, his own approach delves into science journals and nineteenth-century French biographies to uncover a wealth of detail about the historical trajectory of this precise sort of barometer-all in the service of transforming a familiar, overly sedimented "history" into one far richer, more uneven, and still unknown.

Interview: Frederick W. Smith
Founder, Federal Express
May 23, 1998
Jackson Hole, Wyoming Back to Frederick W. Smith Interview Where and when did you get the idea for Federal Express? The original idea came in two parts. The first part was when... I was a student at Yale and wrote a paper about the computerized society that was on the horizon. It was pretty clear then, with IBM installing the big computers around, that the world was going to change. And the paper was about how this was going to change a lot of things, and in particular it was going to change the way things had to be distributed and moved to support those automated devices.
Then I sort of let that lie. I didn't get a particularly good grade on it, as I recall. I don't think it was prescient, or brilliant in any respect. When I graduated from Yale in 1966, I went into the service, like a great percentage of my classmates at that time. The Vietnam War had begun in earnest, and I spent four and a half years in the Marine Corps. That's when I sort of crystallized the idea for FedEx on the supply side, how to solve the problem that had been identified in that paper. In the military there's a tremendous amount of waste. The supplies were sort of pushed forward, like you push food onto a table. And invariably, all of the supplies were in the wrong place for where they were needed. Observing that and trying to think about ways to have a different type of a distribution system is what crystallized the idea.

Do you know what it takes?
Talent, desire, and unforeseen factors aside, becoming a professional football player requires a ruthless amount of discipline and hard work. Yasmine El-Rashidi takes a look at the basic needs of any football fitness programme
Click to view caption The facade of the pro tour is one of fame and fortune. Behind it, however, is the reality of brutal training and a hectic lifestyle Whether in sports, on the stage, or even in the literary arena, we have all at some point in our lives submerged into the magical world of our imaginations and envisioned we were before a gathering of devoted fans. For me it was a daily occurrence. Every morning, on the clay courts of my neighbourhood sporting club, I would imagine I was on the centre court of Wimbeldon. I would run, slide, and serve as if it was championship point, and for every game I would mentally take, I would hear, see, feel, the support of the crowd. The only person there on those school day mornings well before the city was awake, was my father. I visualised to stay focussed, because it was that dream of fame and recognition that kept me going through the solitary hours of training. Perhaps it was my downfall that glory, in reality, is transient the reflection of just a fraction of a professional athlete's career.

    • Begin by defining stereotype. Stereotypes are oversimplified and sometimes mistaken beliefs about a place, thing, or group of people. They often draw on one narrow aspect of a location or social type, amplify it, and then invest an entire area or group with this characteristic. Often negative, stereotypes can suppress the complexities and diversity inherent in any region or group and can keep us from understanding people as individuals. Stereotypes can be used to reaffirm mainstream ideology For example, the classic hero in a Hollywood Western is independent, single-minded in his pursuit of a goal, able to resist feminine temptations, and not averse to using violence to gain a moral end.

Think Like a Champion . "All I could think about was never playing football again." Think Like a Champion is dotted with short testimonials from other players or celebrities who have known Shanahan over the years, and in one the superstar quarterback Steve Young writes that Shanahan reminds him of "the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail The feeling is mutual. Shanahan recounts with pride the day that Young, while under Shanahan's tutelage, threw for an extraordinary six touchdowns in the Super Bowl. An ordinary player would rest easy after a day like that. Not Young. "That night," Shanahan says, "just as he got in the limousine to take him back to our team hotel, [Young] felt lightheaded. He felt like he might pass out. He felt his stomach turning worse than it did before the start of the game. Suddenly Steve could not help himself. He leaned over and threw up. All over his agent's shoes. Then it was back to work. Once you achieve each of your major goals, like Steve did, it's time to set more." Great football coaches have always been obsessive types, men of enormous determination and will. Vince Lombardi, perhaps the greatest football coach ever, cut short his honeymoon so he could get back to the high school where he was then coaching before the first fall football practice. Shanahan didn't take his honeymoon at all. The day he got married turned out to be the same day that recruiting season started for Northern Arizona State, where he had just been given the job of running back coach. Instead of going to Acapulco he and his newlywed put their belongings in a U-Haul and drove nonstop from Atlanta, Illinois, to Flagstaff, Arizona, through a tornado, dust storm, sleet, and snowstorm. "My thinking has always been," Shanahan writes, "that you should do anything, move anywhere, outwork anyone so long as you have the chance to chase your passion and dream."
