The Washington Post, Sunday Dec. 12, 2004

For Sports Fans
Many kids idolize sports stars, but athletes aren't always the best role models. In the series of picture-book autobiographies published by Positively for Kids, however, top professional players underline the importance of character traits such as honesty and hard work as they tell how they have achieved success in sports. Co-written with Greg Brown, the books immediately capture readers' interest with their bold graphic design, fast-paced texts and abundant photographs showing the athletes as children and young adults. In each book, the athlete-author emphasizes a particular piece of advice, encapsulated in the title: Vince Carter: Choose Your Course; Brad Johnson: Play With Passion; Sue Bird: Be Yourself; Eric Gagne: Break Barriers; Tony Gonzalez: Catch and Connect. The players share stories of their childhood dreams and fears while explaining how they developed the skills that brought them fame. Aimed at ages 7-12, the books cost $15.95 each and conclude with a couple of pages of sports statistics, an index and related Web sites. Aaron Brooks: Rise Above
Carmelo Anthony: It's Just The Beginning "Carmelo has special gifts that he has channeled into the game of basketball-true athleticism and the heart of a champion. What he has worked through and what he has achieved in his short life is nothing short of remarkable. Kids everywhere should read this story about hope, guts, and insuppressible spirit."

Looking at each book, in order of mention, we start off with Whale Hunt in the Desert: The Secret Las Vegas of Superhost Steve Cyr (319 pages, hardbound, $24.95), written by Deke Castleman. Perhaps it's best to start off with isolated tidbits from one of the most fascinating books of recent years profiling a man who went from brash telemarketer with a hotel management degree from UNLV to help establish a new style of luring the highest of high rollers.
"Most whales are used to running everything and everyone in their lives. They generally get whatever they want whenever they want it," says Cyr.

More specifically, complex training alternates biomechanically similar high load weight training exercises with plyometric exercises, set for set, in the same workout. An example of complex training would include performing a set of squats followed by a set of jump squats. Methodology
This research study had two primary purposes. The first was to assess the types of gambling behavior in which college student athletes engage. The second was to determine the rates at which student athletes participate in these activities and, more specifically, to see if patterns of participation differed by gender. A self-administered, written questionnaire was used to gather responses to closed-ended questions. Approval to use human subjects for this investigation was obtained from the University of Michigan Institutional Review Board. The specific research methods are described in the following sections. Setting for the Study Selection of participants, which were student athletes from football, and men's and women's basketball teams, was as follows:
  • All NCAA Division I-A football playing schools were included in the study. After identifying 112 Division I-A institutions, the institution's football and basketball conference was reviewed with the goal of including all of the members of the basketball conference in the population. For example, Temple University competes in football in the Big East and in the Atlantic 10 in basketball. Therefore every school from the Atlantic-10 was included in the study. If an institution was included in the sample because one of the institution's conference members plays Division I-A football, their football program (if one exists) was included in the sample. For example, Villanova University was included in the study because their basketball program competes in the Big East. Their football athletes, even though they compete at the I-AA level, were also included in the sample of football athletes. However, Villanova's football conference was not sampled. Institutions from the Ohio Valley Conference and Big Sky Conference were added to round out the sample.

    Zemek's 2003 Pulling No Punches
A no holds barred look at the world of college football going into the 2003 season By Matthew Zemek Its easy (heck, it seems to be the intended POINT of this kind of piece) to really live on the edge, get all sarcastic and emotional, and to simply unload on certain groups of fans and their schools. Its fun, it generates mail, and it creates a heckuva lotta conversation. In short and simple terms, I love the sport of college football as much as ever, but that I hate the business of it more than ever. While my primary job is to report on the SPORT of college football, it would be irresponsible, ignorant and morally bankrupt for me to happily report only on the action between the white lines, and to totally ignore the poisoned and broken state of collegiate athletics, particularly in big-time football and basketball. Reporting only on the bread and circus games while either refusing or brushing off the call to speak to issues of social morality, academic honesty, and institutional integrity would make me nothing more than a cog in an entertainment machine. Id be an Access Hollywood kind of (so-called) journalist, just a pretty face who deals only in light, happy, breezy, breathless coverage of entertainment events without having the slightest care for taking on ventures that matter in terms of human hearts and minds.

A conversation with George Plimpton about Truman Capote
By Tanya Stanciu and Amy Nickell
From Gadfly June 1998 BUY IT! In his recently published "oral biography," Truman Capote: In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances, and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career, George Plimpton invites us to listen in on the voices of those who knew Truman Capote—Norman Mailer, Gore Vidal, Kurt Vonnegut, Katharine Graham and dozens of others—as they describe this truly original man. Hailing from the tiny town of Monroeville, Alabama, Capote rose to become a powerful player in the worlds of politics, fashion, Hollywood, the arts and high society. Writer, society lion and eventually television celebrity, the ever-entertaining Capote is probably best known for his "true-crime" nonfiction novel In Cold Blood , his creation of Holly Golightly in the short tale of Breakfast at Tiffany's , and his dismissal of Jack Kerouac's work with the famous remark: "It isn't writing at all. It's typing." And, as this interview attests, with a long and respected New York writing and editing career, George Plimpton is no stranger to high society or the arts himself, making him the perfect person to assemble such an extensive account of Capote and his work.

Friendliness is the biggest hurdle that sports management sims have to face. Unwieldy text-based interfaces and dated production values, which leave games looking like spreadsheets, have been the death of many-an-otherwise-exacting simulation. This is a particular problem in the early editions of a budding series, and as such, titles are usually made on a shoestring budget. So it's a welcome surprise that .400 Software Studios' Total Pro Football (only available online at the official Web site) gets all of these elements correct, right out of the gate. Colorful graphics, an interface that practically leads you by the hand, and fantastic depth make this the best inaugural football sim since the release of the original Front Office Football.

Review: 'Golden - The Hobey Baker Story'
by Adam Wodon /Columnist Hobey Baker lived so long ago (1892-1918), in a time when broadcast media did not exist, and before film was popularized, that we know very little about him beyond some faded photographs and romanticized writings. Hobey Baker was inducted into the initial class of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945. He is also in the College Football and U.S. Hockey Halls of Fame. As a result, those who have read about Hobey Baker's life won't get much new out of New Hampshire Public Television's production of "Golden: The Hobey Baker Story" (debuts Wednesday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. on NHPTV). NHPTV only had so much material to draw from. Nevertheless, it is a valuable work, to finally have, in "Biography" form, a visual history of Hobey Baker. Paul Lally produced, directed, wrote and narrated the show. He spent six months researching and conducting interviews and came away with a first-rate product. (The program can be had on DVD with a $90 pledge. Details here .) That it gets over-flowery at times can be forgiven considering that all the primary sources of information about Baker are filled with a romanticized image of the perfect golden boy next door. For those who only know that Hobey Baker is the man college hockey's most famous award is named after, it's hard to imagine that Baker was once a living legend. At a time when hockey was not exactly a popular sport in the United States, Baker drew huge crowds in the thousands to see him play in cities like New York and Boston. He was one of the most well-known sports figures of his time, rivaling the likes of Jim Thorpe and Ty Cobb.
