Biography of Don DeLillo (1936-)
Don DeLillo Don DeLillo was born on Nov. 20, 1936, in New York City's borough of the Bronx, to Italian immigrants. DeLillo had little contact with literature until he was 18, when he describes being carried away by the power and beauty of language. He attended Fordham University in New York, but found the city a far more exciting playground, citing its access to experimental art, jazz, and movies (he describes French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard as the primary influence over his early work). He had a brief stint in the advertising world, and though he claims it was an uninteresting time of his life, his obsession with media and American culture may find its roots there, as well as in his immigrant background. DeLillo's first novel, Americana (1971), traces these issues of media and culture through the travels of a television executive who tries to rediscover America through a film project. DeLillo delved into deeper questions of death, celebrity, cults, and consumerism in End Zone (1972), about a football player, and Great Jones Street (1973), about a reclusive rock star. His next series of books Ratner's Star (1976), Players (1977), Running Dog (1978), and Amazons (1980, written under the pen name Cleo Birdwell) all deal with highly specific fictional worlds. Ratner's Star, for instance, is about astronomy, and Amazons tells a woman's "true" memoirs of playing in the National Hockey League.

George Santayana
Philosopher, poet, literary and cultural critic, George Santayana is a principal figure in Classical American Philosophy. His naturalism and emphasis on creative imagination were harbingers of important intellectual turns on both sides of the Atlantic. He was a naturalist before naturalism grew popular; he appreciated multiple perfections before multiculturalism became an issue; he thought of philosophy as literature before it became a theme in American and European scholarly circles; and he managed to naturalize Platonism, update Aristotle, fight off idealisms, and provide a striking and sensitive account of the spiritual life without being a religious believer. His Hispanic heritage, shaded by his sense of being an outsider in America, captures many qualities of American life missed by insiders, and presents views equal to Tocqueville in quality and importance. Beyond philosophy, only Emerson may match his literary production. As a public figure, he appeared on the front cover of Time (3 February 1936), and his autobiography (

Considering the experiences of Boobie Miles and Brian Chavez, for example, what role does football play in their lives and in the lives of the people of Odessa? Does football play a similar role in your own community? To what extent do Boobie and Brian's ambitions and experiences prepare each of them differently for life after football?
Of the Odessa team preparing for the game against Midland Lee, Bissinger writes that "the perfection of their equipment ... the solemn ritual that was attached to almost everything, made them seem like boys going off to fight a war for the benefit of someone else, unwitting sacrifices to a strange and powerful god." (p 11) In what ways might they be viewed as "unwitting sacrifices"? How would you describe the "strange and powerful god" to whom they were being sacrificed? Bissinger notes that the tradition of Odessa's Permian Panthers "was enshrined on a wall of the field house" (p 24) and also "in the county library, where the 235-page history that had been written about Permian football was more detailed than any of the histories about the town itself." What conclusions concerning Odessa might be drawn from the fact that its high school football program is valued more highly than the town's history? What value does your community place on high school sports? How does what Bissinger characterizes as "the hearty, hair-trigger temperament of the place" affect our view of Odessa and its residents' attitudes and behavior? What examples of this "hearty, hair-trigger temperament" do you observe in your own community or on the national level? In what ways might it be seen as characteristically American?
