Spring, 2005 The 2005 season has seen new and revised material added to the RL1908.com web site, and also a new book release:
The Rugby Rebellion - The Divide of League and Union
In preparing the content for RL1908.com back in 2000 and '01, I relied upon existing rugby league history books and magazines. However, over the following seasons, I started to undertake my own research for RL1908 articles. In doing so I began to find that many rugby league (and rugby union) books and magazines are not always accurate, particularly in regard to the pre-WW2 era. Many publications also simply re-tell what has been printed before - over time a number of myths and errors have become the "truth". Now, I won't claim that my writing and RL1908 is not just as guilty of this charge as everyone else. As I said, some of the material added to the web site in the first few years (particular

About Guitarra Contact Us MUSICIANS GUITARRA MAGAZINE: We have the pleasure to be here with Professor Thomas Patterson, head of the guitar department at the University of Arizona. Professor Patterson, can you tell us a little about your professional background both as a guitarist and as a guitar teacher?
THOMAS PATTERSON: I studied with some important people like Segovia, Oscar Ghiglia, and Michael Lorimer, as well as Abel Carlevaro. Besides, I also learned from my friends that are professionals. All the knowledge I've gained over the years is from exchanging information with other professionals as well as from my students.
GM: We understand you not only took lessons from guitar teachers but also from a piano teacher at some point.
TP: Yes, when I was in school back in 1969, guitarists did not have the same luxury as of today of choosing the school they wanted to go to study in. Besides Northern California there was not much more around. Where I went to school I took lessons with a violin professor for a year or so and with a piano professor. They were my weekly teachers, instead of a guitarist. Then I traveled to the San Francisco Bay area to study with the people I mentioned earlier.
GM: How valuable was this experience of taking lessons from non-guitarist musicians? Do you think it is an experience that every guitarist should have at some point?

Some say, "a schooled regimen", and others prefer...'a gift from God', 'a natural talent', or, 'an over-active right side'. Personally, I believe that everyone is born with a specific passion to help them with a life that smiles. I encourage "I hate my life"-ers to believe in their's. Passion has no respect for time. Learning, practice, failures and success all seem to take simple moments. My passion is art. Perhaps, because the essence of art is sharing. I invite you to come share in mine and show me your own passion! "A self-taught artist for over twenty-three years, I followed my passion for realism through the mediums of pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor and oils. My methods and techniques can be generalized into one word...'transparency'. I work with multiple layers of paint, which requires patience between applications. I find this gives me incredible depth and luminosity in my paintings. I am a true purist with my work-including, no use of masking fluids or tapes in my watercolor pieces. "What is white is the paper..." was an attraction I found through my use of charcoal and I have followed that passion through to the other mediums. Reading the eyes of animals, for years, gave way to telling stories of travels-through the portraiture of beautiful and historical places visited. I hope my art is a reminder of your own story there, or, encourages you to go make one"…bj

My Ascent into 8th Grade Stardom Essay written by Mike Calimbas My Ascent into 8th Grade Stardom
It was very hard moving to a new town in the summer of 1994. This event meant having to attend a new middle school and reestablish myself in a new environment. Even though I had moved about every two years of my entire life, that did not make this time any easier. I still had to make new friends and ground myself all over again.
Middle School, like most other middle schools, had an "in" crowd. At Crossroads, it was mainly the football players. After I started school at Crossroads, football tryouts were being staged. I saw this as a most significant event on my path through adolescence, a chance to get recognized by my new school, as well as a chance to make some friends and gain some glory along the way.
Getting up at one Saturday morning and going up to the school, I was very nervous about whether I would make the team or not. I've always had athletic ability, but since this was a new town, I was unsure about how my skills would compare with the other kids. Football tryout was a grueling event. When tryouts started, it was explained to all of us that the coaches would run drills in order to gauge our skills, and then place us in specific position groups. After the drills, which I did exceptionally well in , Coach Jones placed me in the running back group. He told me that I was extremely strong and fast, and that I would make a good tailback. It felt so good, not only making the team, but being singled out by Coach Jones as possibly one of the better players on the squad.

So while you can go to the nearest book store and find a shelf of books on breast cancer or prostate cancer or heart disease, you simply are not going to find a book on testicular cancer. Fortunately, that does not mean that they don't exist; you just have to look harder. The online bookstores make this simple. What follows is a list of all the books that I could find that dealt in some way with testicular or extragonadal germ cell tumors. While a few medical books at the bottom of the page discuss the nature and treatment of the disease, most of these books talk about cancer through a biography. I have not read them all, but the ones I have are very compelling and informative. For your information, all these links go to amazon.com . THE FANZINE SPECIFIC QUALITIES

    THE NEW FOOTBALL CULTURE
However, one final point on football fanzines, is that they are self-reflexive. The writers in fanzines do not exaggerate their own significance or importance. Instead, they know their limitations. They know they will not transform the culture of football, or upset the power relations inside football. As Picture 10, here we have the stereo-type of Scottish fans: dour, uniform, colourless, pessimistic, purchasing the official programme of the club (the propaganda sheet of the club), accepting of the poor conditions inside the ground, and poor quality of football that he must watch. And the question is, do you really think you could transform this passive football culture? Fanzines are well aware of their relative powerlessness. So, if we are to interpret the sociological meaning of the new football culture, we might point to some key issues:
  • There is real scope for a 'soft Marxist' interpretation. And, this would centre on the Gramscian point, that a political struggle is certainly taking place, to try to win hegemonic control over the cultural and economic sphere of football. Financially, this means that football seeks a new bourgeois audience. It is assisted in this project by the underlying contraction of the working class, and the rise in numbers and cultural power of the service class, the new middle class.

Jackie Robinson: A Portrait Betty Harper Introduction The middle school at which I teach was once a predominantly Caucasian school that was founded fifty-three years ago. The student population has changed a great deal since then and is now 80% Hispanic, 15% African American, and 5% other ethnicities. My students are academically inclined to be at risk for failure, but this school year marked an improvement both for them and for our school. Having received an “acceptable” score for several years on state standardized tests, my students have helped to raise the ranking of the school from “academically acceptable” to “recognized.” ( Texas uses a system of grading schools that ranks them as “low performing,” “academically acceptable,” “recognized,” and “exemplary.”) On my campus, students from special education and general education classes are combined in an inclusion process which helps each special education student to enhance his or her social skills and to learn the importance of organizational skills and staying on task. Our campus includes a Bilingual / LEP program inclusive of English as a Second Language (ESL). Additionally, our school has a Vanguard (
