ARCHIVE HIGHLIGHT Trumpeting Truman
A conversation with George Plimpton about Truman Capote
By Tanya Stanciu and Amy Nickell
From Gadfly June 1998 BUY IT! In his recently published "oral biography," Truman Capote: In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances, and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career, George Plimpton invites us to listen in on the voices of those who knew Truman Capote—Norman Mailer, Gore Vidal, Kurt Vonnegut, Katharine Graham and dozens of others—as they describe this truly original man. Hailing from the tiny town of Monroeville, Alabama, Capote rose to become a powerful player in the worlds of politics, fashion, Hollywood, the arts and high society. Writer, society lion and eventually television celebrity, the ever-entertaining Capote is probably best known for his "true-crime" nonfiction novel In Cold Blood , his creation of Holly Golightly in the short tale of Breakfast at Tiffany's , and his dismissal of Jack Kerouac's work with the famous remark: "It isn't writing at all. It's typing." And, as this interview attests, with a long and respected New York writing and editing career, George Plimpton is no stranger to high society or the arts himself, making him the perfect person to assemble such an extensive account of Capote and his work.

CFLPA Pro Players honours Tony Gabriel at this year's Grey Cup in Ottawa
CFLPA PRO PLAYERS will be hosting a cabaret at this year's Grey Cup to be held in Ottawa.
This will be their first event ever at Grey Cup but it won't be the last!
Each year, a past player from the host city will be honoured. This year, Friday, November 19, 2004 will officially be "Tony Gabriel Night".
Tony Gabriel played in the C.F.L. from 1971 to 1981 as a Tight End.
He was born on December 11, 1948 in Hamilton, Ontario and was part of a large family (11 siblings). As a young boy he worked on his family farm and perhaps it was this experience which gave him his ultimate strength and constitution that would carry him through his C.F.L. days and ultimately make him the legend he is today.
He commenced his illustrious football career in Grade 11 as a flanker, eventually joining the Burlington Braves junior football team. It was here he would meet the legendary Bernie Custis, former quarterback of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the first black quarterback to gain all-star status while leading a professional team. The experience was Tony's first as a tight end. And it proved to be a lasting fit. Gabriel was eventually recruited by Syracuse University as a tight end and in his 3 years with the Orangemen, he set 6 reception records including career catches (87) and most TDs in a single game (4). Gabriel distinguished himself as a tight end and was noticed by both the CFL and NFL.

http://www.vincelombardi.com/about/biography.html
Biography
Vincent Thomas Lombardi was born on June 11, 1913, in Brooklyn, New York. He was the first of Henry and Matilda Lombardi's five children. Vince was raised in the Catholic faith and studied the priesthood for two years before transferring to St. Francis Preparatory High School, where he was a star fullback on the football team.
Vince was accepted at New York City's Fordham University in 1933. After a year on the freshman team, varsity football coach "Sleepy" Jim Crowley (a Knute Rockne protégé) made 170-pound Vince a guard in Fordham's steadfast defensive line, which was tagged the "Seven Blocks of Granite." He was successful off the field as well, graduating cum laude with a business major in 1937.
For the next two years, Vince worked at a finance company, took night classes at Fordham's law school and played semi-pro football with Delaware's Wilmington Clippers. In 1939 he took a teaching and coaching job at St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey. For $1,700 a year Vince taught Latin, algebra, physics and chemistry, and coached the football, basketball and baseball teams.

He resigned the SCLC leadership to run unsuccessfully for Andrew Young's congressional seat (1977). Turning away from the civil rights movement, he devoted his attention to the West Hunter Street Baptist Church and the issues of worldwide peace.

Sixty minute man
By Ron Flatter
Special to ESPN.com
"A linebacker is like an animal. He's like a lion or a tiger and he goes after prey. He wants to eat him, he wants to kick the out of him. That's a linebacker," says Chuck Bednarik on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. In the fifties, the "Sixty Minute Man" was "Lovin' Dan," Billy Ward and his Dominoes' hero of double entendre. The nineties brought Deion Sanders, a wide-receiving, defensive-backing, kick-returning general practitioner, the latter-day "Sixty Minute Man." Both were works of fiction. Some would argue no man has lived up to the reputation of "Lovin' Dan," and Deion never clocked in close to a full hour, not even in the primest of his time. Want to find the real-life "Sixty Minute Man?" Turn to the one who was known as "Concrete Charlie." Almost four decades since he last played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Chuck Bednarik is remembered as the last of pro football's true full-timers - center on offense, middle linebacker on defense, in the trenches on special teams (even before they were called special teams). Bednarik was no "Lovin' Dan." His plaque in the Pro Football Hall of Fame says he was a "rugged, durable, bulldozing blocker" and a "bone-jarring tackler." That meant he was no Deion, either.

Biography Louis BERTIGNAC
Louis Bertignac made a name for himself on the international music scene as guitarist with the legendary French rock group T©l©phone. If, in the 70's and 80's, T©l©phone were the French equivalent of The Rolling Stones, then Bertignac was the definitive Gallic version of Keith Richards … but all good things come to an end and when T©l©phone split in 1986, Bertignac took on the role of Lonesome Guitar Man, launching a successful career as a solo musician.
Louis Bertignac was born in Oran (Algeria) on 23 February 1954. When Louis was three years old his family left Oran, however, and returned to Paris, fleeing the climate of insurrection which was brewing in Algeria at the time. Thus it was that Louis and his younger sister grew up in Paris, roaming the streets of the capital's 12th arrondissement . After settling into life in Paris, Louis soon developed a passionate interest in music so his parents enrolled him in a classical guitar course. The first lesson proved to be a complete disaster, however - indeed, at the end of the lesson Louis declared he was bored stiff with classical guitar chords! Although he soon dropped out of the course completely, Louis was inspired to go off and buy a chord book, and the enthusiastic young guitar fan promptly set about teaching himself to play the instrument from scratch. From the age of 13 Louis attended the Lyc©e Carnot in Paris, where he soon proved himself to be a talented, hard-working pupil and an excellent football player. Music remained his great passion in life, however, and when he was not on the football pitch, Louis would shut himself away in his bedroom, practising his guitar chords as he listened to his favourite groups. (His main heroes at this stage were The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles). Louis would soon start to think about forming his own group and in the early 70's he met up with Corine Marienneau and Richard Kolinka (two future members of the group

Skybook offers you Online Sports Betting and Online Casino Gambling THE 50 GREATEST NFL PLAYERS John Elway It starts with the arm, that magnificent right arm that delivered passes long, short, from impossible angles, off the wrong foot and while he was lying down, falling down, kneeling and running left or right. It was unfailingly dependable for 16 NFL seasons, the scourge of defensive backs and the architect of numerous magic moments. It was the go-to weapon in a sizable arsenal, the one that most likely would fire when everything was on the line. It seemed to be that way forever, from John Elway's early days as a record-setting Stanford quarterback to his selection as the No. 1 overall draft pick of 1983 and his career as the unflappable field general of the Denver Broncos. The arm was good enough to earn him a minor league contract with the New York Yankees and to break the hearts of Cleveland Browns fans in the 1986 postseason with The Drive, the 98-yard march that epitomized Elways reputation as one of the greatest comeback quarterbacks of all time. Elway's other skills were overshadowed but no less feared.
