Eli Manning
GROWING UP
As the youngest of the three athletic brothers, Eli was at the bottom of the pecking order. Peyton loved to pick on him, and Eli often looked to Cooper for protection. Peyton, an SEC fanatic, would pin down Eli, pummeling him until he recited all of the teams in the conference. The youngster, who was never much for trivia, learned a lot by default.
Eli had an advantage in the recruiting battle over him because Peyton and Cooper had gone through the same process. As he headed into his senior year, the pressure to choose a school intensified. Ole Miss was an obvious choice. Both Archie and Cooper were Mississippi grads, though the younger Manning never suited up for the Rebels. After being diagnosed with a congenital spinal condition, Cooper decided to give up the sport, rather than risk being paralyzed.
Archie Manning, 1983 Topps In the summer of 1998, Eli attended a football camp at Ole Miss, a move that fans took as an indication of his desire to become a Rebel. But the teenager was still undecided. Tennessee worked hard to lure him, as did Georgia, Texas, LSU and Florida. In the midst of this recruiting frenzy, Eli enjoyed a great senior year at Newman. Again he quarterbacked the team to the playoffs, posting an 11-1 record. Eli ended his high school career with 7,389 yards and 89 touchdowns, 200 more yards than Peyton but three less scores.

Biographical Sketch
Paul A. Schack, department store executive and local historian, was born to East European parents in South River, New Jersey, in 1902. His father, Alexander Schack, had emigrated to the United States from Russia at the age of 28, in 1895. Alexander became an embroiderer and eventually erected a large embroidery factory on Robert Street in South River. In 1905, he built the Riverside Hotel, which he owned and managed for the remainder of his life. He also acquired a wholesale bottling and distribution establishment in South River and came to be recognized as one of the leading businessmen in the community. Alexander was one of the founding members of the Sts. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church and remained prominent in church affairs until his death, from influenza, in 1919. Paul Schack's mother, Mary Lukac, was born in Stara Lubovnia, Slovakia, in 1883. She emigrated to the United States in the late 1890s and married Alexander Schack at the turn of the century. The couple became naturalized American citizens and had six children, Amelia, Paul, Mamie, Walter, Sophie and John. Walter W. Schack attended the University of Alabama and Rutgers Law School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart in 1943. Walter W. Schack served as the mayor of South River from 1954-1959 and was the first person of Russian descent to attain that office.

100 Greatest Players of All-Time
#9 Nile Kinnick Nile Kinnick, Halfback
Iowa, 1937-1939 As we've gone along in our analysis and ratings of the 100 Greatest Players, much stock has been put into the legendary aspect of the player and what he meant to his school and to college football. No player in college football history meant more to a whole state than Nile Kinnick meant to Iowa becoming its most popular hero and is still today its most revered icon. If you want the ultimate model of what a student/athlete should be, Kinnick was it as a Heisman winner on the football field and a honor student and class president off of it. The Iron man of Iron Men: Iowa football wasn't exactly a power in the world of college football in the 1930s as its neighbor to the north, Minnesota, was busy owning the Midwest. After going 2-13-1 and scoring a total of 82 points in 1937 and 1938, Dr. Eddie Anderson took over the head coaching job and Iowa went on to have a season for the ages winning games in dramatic fashion with a group of two way players outlasting several big-time powerhouses with specialists on offense and defense. Kinnick had a flair for the dramatic making the game-winning play against Indiana choosing to throw for a fifteen yard touchdown pass rather than try the game-tying field goal. After an early 27-7 loss to Michigan, he took care of Wisconsin on a late touchdown pass for 19-13 win. Losing player after player to injury, Iowa had only 14 healthy players late against Purdue in the 4-0 win. Iowa upset No. 1 Notre Dame 7-6 using only 15 players with Kinnick punting 16 times for 731 yards including a 63-yard boot under a heavy rush pinning the Irish on the six-yard line late in the game. Many still consider it the greatest clutch punt in college football history. Kinnick also scored Iowa's only touchdown. The following week the "Iron man" team of Iowa upset the might Minnesota squad 13-9.

Jackie Robinson
Also known as: Jack Roosevelt Robinson, John Roosevelt Robinson
Baseball player, activist Honored internationally as the central figure in baseball's "Noble Experiment," Jack Roosevelt Robinson, known in the world of baseball as Jackie Robinson, took the first steps toward integrating the sport's major league teams when he signed a contract to play with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. This gigantic stride, which prepared the way for the legendary feats of Willie Mays and Henry Aaron, was an early harbinger of the significant changes in contract negotiations, compensation, and general status of professional athletes addressed half a century later in the 1994-95 baseball strike. His individual challenge to the accepted policies of organized sports demonstrated that change was possible through the concentrated effort of a player's union.

About Guitarra Contact Us MUSICIANS GUITARRA MAGAZINE: We have the pleasure to be here with Professor Thomas Patterson, head of the guitar department at the University of Arizona. Professor Patterson, can you tell us a little about your professional background both as a guitarist and as a guitar teacher?
THOMAS PATTERSON: I studied with some important people like Segovia, Oscar Ghiglia, and Michael Lorimer, as well as Abel Carlevaro. Besides, I also learned from my friends that are professionals. All the knowledge I've gained over the years is from exchanging information with other professionals as well as from my students.
GM: We understand you not only took lessons from guitar teachers but also from a piano teacher at some point.
TP: Yes, when I was in school back in 1969, guitarists did not have the same luxury as of today of choosing the school they wanted to go to study in. Besides Northern California there was not much more around. Where I went to school I took lessons with a violin professor for a year or so and with a piano professor. They were my weekly teachers, instead of a guitarist. Then I traveled to the San Francisco Bay area to study with the people I mentioned earlier.
GM: How valuable was this experience of taking lessons from non-guitarist musicians? Do you think it is an experience that every guitarist should have at some point?

James P. Hoffa "When I was elected in 1998, I knew the journey to rebuild the Teamsters and the labor movement would be difficult. But if we are to build better lives for our families, our communities and our country, it is a journey that we must make. "The Teamsters are well on their way to transforming the labor movement into a social force that can improve the lives of all working people. To reach our goal, we must engage people in our struggle for social and economic justice. That means reaching out to those in need. We must remind the world that collectively we can make a difference. That one voice may get lost in the crowd, but together our voices will be heard. And when our voice is heard, its impact will be felt around the globe. "Solidarity is the key to our future, and through solidarity we will prevail in our struggle for fairness and justice.”

  • Born: 31 May 1943 Birthplace: Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania Best Known As: Professional football's "Broadway Joe"
Quarterback Joe Namath played American football from 1965 to 1977, but it was his performance in 1969's Super Bowl III that catapulted him to stardom and cemented his place in sports history. Namath was a star quarterback at the University of Alabama, where he played for legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and led the team to a 29-4 record in three seasons. In 1965 he won the Most Valuable Player award after Alabama's loss at the Orange Bowl, and almost immediately signed a contract to play with the New York Jets of the American Football League. At the time the league was overshadowed by the National Football League (they later merged), and Namath's natural charisma and swagger brought more public attention to the AFL. When the Jets made it to the Super Bowl in 1969, it was assumed the NFL's Baltimore Colts (led by Johnny Unitas ) would win the contest with ease. Namath made headlines by proclaiming in public that he could "guarantee" a Jets victory. Namath dominated the game, the Jets beat the Colts in a stunning upset and Namath was named the game's Most Valuable Player.
