Biography of Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds (Ret.)
Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds
Major General, USMC (Ret.) President, The Citadel Major General John Southy Grinalds, United States Marine Corps (Retired), is the 18th president of The Citadel. He arrived at the historic military college on August 1, 1997, one year after the first female cadets were admitted. During his first year, General Grinalds announced his intentions to strengthen the communications, admissions and fundraising functions of the college while also focusing on cadet leadership training and the philosophy that leadership means service to others. His tenure as president has been marked by significant milestones in admissions, fundraising, coeducation and media relations. A less tangible but more far reaching influence, however, has been his advocacy of principled leadership as evidenced by his strong support for integrating leadership and ethics into all aspects of campus life. Interest in The Citadel has increased significantly under Grinalds' leadership and, in recent years, the college has set admissions records. As applications have increased, recent entering classes have been more competitive and retention has improved. Female enrollment in the Corps of Cadets has gone from four to more than 120 in eight years. The separate fundraising entities of the college are now coordinated under a unified organization - The Citadel Foundation - and donations to the college have grown dramatically.

Reggie White
Reginald Howard White Source Contemporary Black Biography , Gale Research. 1994. Dec. 19, 1961 - Dec. 26, 2004
Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States
Nationality : American
Occupation : Football player
Occupation : Minister (Religion)
Occupation : Philanthropist
Awards : Named Southeast Conference Player of the Year, 1984; named NFC rookie of the year, 1986; named NFL defensive player of the year by Associated Press 1986 and 1998; named to 1980s All-Decade Team Pro Football Weekly, 1991; named defensive player of the year by Pro Football Weekly, 1991; named to NFL Pro Bowl, 1986-98; Pro Bowl MVP, 1987; White's Jersey Number (92) retired by the Green Bay Packer's, 1999; named to NFL's All-time Team, 2000. For a decade and a half, Reggie White dominated the National Football League as one of its most ferocious defensive players. White habitually struck terror into many an offense with his strength; he possessed speed, stamina, and the ability to size up situations for maximum impact. Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Buddy Ryan once called White the "perfect defensive lineman...probably the most gifted defensive athlete I've ever been around." After eight seasons with the Eagles, in 1993 White signed a four-year, $17 million contract with the Green Bay Packers; it was an unprecedented amount for a defensive player. Upon his retirement from the NFL in 2001, White was credited with a record 198 career sacks; he had been named to the Pro Bowl an impressive 13 times in succession (although he failed to play in 1994 due to injury). In 1999, the Green Bay Packers retired White's jersey number (92) after his retirement from that team.

Ronnie Lott Biography
An All-American defensive back at the University of Southern California in 1980, Lott was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 1981 NFL draft. He started at cornerback for six seasons, leading the league with 10 interceptions in 1986. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound Lott, a very hard hitter, was moved to free safety the following season. He became a free agent in 1991 and signed with the Oakland Raiders, who used him at strong safety. Lott again led the NFL in interceptions with 8 in 1991. He joined the New York Jets as a free agent in 1993. He retired after the 1994 season. Ronnie Lott has been a defensive star from the moment he joined the 49ers in 1981, his dedication and fierce, all-out style of play have inspired his teammates. As a rookie, Lott started all 16 games, earned All-Pro honors and played in his first Pro Bowl. A four time Super Bowl champion, Lott played in 10 Pro Bowls. He ranks fifth on the NFL all time interception list, leading the league in 1986 and 1991, while registering over 1,000 tackles throughout his illustrious 14-year career. Besides his obvious physical skills, Lott was much respected as a team leader. He was an All-Pro at three positions, as a cornerback in 1981, a free safety in 1987 and 1990, and a strong safety in 1991. He was named to the NFL's 75th anniversary team in 1995.

Baird, David Lindsay 1895 - 1947 [ Football player ]
Born Friday, 26 July 1895 in Gore. David Baird, who was better known by his nickname "Scotty", was a leading exponent of the old wing forward position, especially in the early 20s. Baird played for Southland before the outbreak of World War I and that cut across what would probably have been his best rugby years. But in 1920 and 1921 he achieved considerable distinction. In 1920 he toured Australia with the first All Black team chosen after the end of the war. He was a leading player on tour missing only one midweek match and appearing in all three of the unofficial tests against the New South Wales Waratahs.
Tall at more than 1.83 and strongly built, Baird was an excellent all round athlete and adept as well in line outs. He had considerable pace, too, and was not out of place when running with a back line. He was, indeed, remarkably versatile and when the All Blacks met Wellington on their return home he appeared at centre. Baird was also a capable goal kicker landing a penalty in the win over Wellington and a conversion in Australia. The highlight of Baird's relatively short career came in 1920 but not with the All Blacks. Rather this was for Southland when he captained that province to its first ever Ranfurly Shield success, 17-6 over Wellington in Invercargill. It was perhaps inevitable that eventually in 1920 Wellington's liberal attitude to the shield in playing for it both in away and home matches would mean the shield's departure and then, as now, Southland were difficult to beat on their home ground.

This devotion has imprinted itself in popular culture artwork , even household items found in our society. The America's Smithsonian 150th Anniversary exhibition: American Pastimes: Entertainment shows how the Smithsonian's sports collections preserve objects representing sport on all levelsthe ordinary and extraordinary athlete, as well as sports fans and workers. In 1950, Jim Thorpe was named the greatest football player and the greatest male athlete of the first half of the twentieth century, by an Associated Press poll of nearly four-hundred sportswriters. Thorpe excelled not only in collegiate and professional football, but in baseball, track, and a number of other sports. However, his brilliant career as an athlete was punctuated by tragedy and disappointment off the field. Thorpe was born in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) to parents of mixed European and Native American heritage. Glenn S. "Pop" Warner, coach at Pennsylvania's Carlisle Indian Industrial School, where Thorpe became a student at age sixteen, was the first to recognize the young man's natural athletic ability. Though Thorpe primarily concentrated on track and field, he created a sensation on the football field when, as an emergency substitute halfback for Carlisle, he ran two touchdowns in an upset victory over rival University of Pennsylvania.

John Wayne (born Marion Morrison) was the son of pharmacist Clyde Morrison and his wife Mary. Clyde developed a lung condition that required him to move his family from Iowa to the warmer climate of southern California, where they tried ranching in the Mojave Desert. Until the ranch failed, Marion and his younger brother Robert E. Morrison Tom Mix got him a summer job as a prop man in exchange for football tickets. On the set he became close friends with director John Ford for whom, among others, he began doing bit parts, some billed as John Wayne . His first featured film was Men Without Women (1930). After more than 70 low-budget westerns and adventures, mostly routine, Wayne's career was stuck in a rut until Ford cast him in
