Until the completion of the Amsterdam Arena it was used for matches for which more than 20,000 spectators were expected or which had to be played in the evening. Although the Olympic Stadium had not originally been intended as a football stadium and has never been the official property of one single football club, Ajax played many important matches in the stadium. Many people cherish their memories of these historic Ajax matches played against the concrete backdrop of the old Stadium.

The All Manipur Football Association was established in the year 1976 under Registration No. 2028 0f 1976 of the Registrar of Societies, Government of Manipur. Before this Football Activities in the State were taken up by All Manipur Sports Association. It was with the directive of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and on the principle of one game one Association that the AMFA got separated from AMSA. The AMFA is an affiliated unit of All India Football Federation and Manipur Olympic Association. Before 1992, AMFA was directly responsible for all activities including Inter-Club Leagues, Inter Districts, State/National Championships , preparation of State Teams and other Football Development Programmes. However from 1992, Inter Club Leagues were directly assigned to the District Associations. ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE ASSOCIATION So far, Manipur has produced as many as 200 Internationals. At present, a good number of footballers from this tiny state are playing for many big clubs all over the Indian Sub-continent including, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Md. Sporting Union, Air India, Services, Churchil Brothers etc.etc.etc. earning fabulous incomes. In the recent years, there are at least some players from this state in the Indian team squad. Manipur women players have complete domination in the country. Our girls lifted the Sr. Nationals Trophy for a record 8 times out of 10 editions. Not only this, there are 9-10 players of this state in the Indian Women's teams of all age groups.

Sunday, October 1 Cool Cameroon clinch shoot-out From Oliver Holt in Sydney A penalty shoot-out, so often a desultory dessert at the end of a sumptuous meal, illuminated the men’s football Olympic final yesterday afternoon. The Spain players did not shame themselves in the postscript to their 2-2 draw with Cameroon but the Indomitable Lions displayed such poise, such confidence in their own technical ability, that they turned the competition from the spot into a confirmation of African football’s quickening march. Cameroon did not miss one of their five kicks. They sent the Spain goalkeeper, Aranzubia, the wrong way each time. Even if he had guessed right, he would not have got near three of them. Those were hit high and powerfully towards the roof of the net. One, after a languid apology of a run-up from Samuel Eto’o Fils, the game’s outstanding player, was a chip that kissed the underside of the crossbar on its way in. After Spain missed once - Amaya’s drive bounced off the top of the bar - the contest was over. Pierre Wome completed the formalities. Even if football has not managed to figure highly on the Richter Scale of achievements that these Olympics have produced, Wome’s celebration, running round the net, leaping the advertising boards, dancing a wiggled-hip jig and hurling his shirt into the crowd, was undoubtedly one of the best of the Games. Pierre Wome scores the winning penalty in the shoot-out. Picture: Lionel Cironneau/AP

Olympic Soccer History The first official men's Olympic soccer tournament dates back to the 1908 London Games, where Great Britain defeated Denmark to claim the first soccer gold medal. Since that time soccer has been part of every Olympic Games Program, with the exception of the 1932 Los Angeles Games. The 1940 and 1944 Olympic Games were cancelled completely due to the political tensions surrounding World War II. The United States has competed in the men's Olympic finals 12 times, including five straight tournaments from 1984 to 2000. In addition, the U.S. qualified for but did not compete in the 1980 Moscow Games following a boycott by the U.S. Olympic Committee. The U.S. missed out on qualifying for the 2004 Athens Olympics, winning their group but then losing a one-game qualifying match against Mexico at Estadio Azteca in Mexico after the Mexicans had finished in second in their group. For the U.S. women, Olympic gold show twice for the team, with first place medals in 1996 in Atlanta and in 2004 in Athens.

The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

The Golden Days... Jim Ryun , in 1966, brought the world record for the mile back to the United States for the first time since 1937. His time of 3 minutes 51.3 seconds, made on July 17, at Berkeley, Calif., smashed Michel Jazy's previous mark of 3 minutes 53.6 seconds by 2.3 seconds. He was timed at the quarter mile posts in 57.6 seconds, 1 minute 55.5 seconds, and 2 minutes 55.3 seconds. Ryun also set a world record in the half-mile of 1 minute 44.9 seconds, and a U.S. record in the two-mile of 8 minutes 25.2 seconds Only one other athlete, sprinter Tommy Smith of San Jose State College, seriously challenged Ryun's supremacy on the track. Smith set four world records at 200 meters and 220 yards. On May 7, he lowered the standard for the straightaway race from 20 seconds to 19.5 seconds, and on June 11 he ran around a full turn in 20 seconds to take .2 (two tenths) of a second off the world record. Both marks were set at 220 yards, thus automatically applying to the shorter 200-meter distance (218 yards 2 feet 2 inches). Smith also excelled as a member of the U.S. team that set a world record for the 1,600-meter relay with a clocking of 2 minutes 59.6 seconds. His 400-meter leg of the relay took only 43.8 seconds, at that time the fastest ever. Smith also set a world record of 44.5 seconds for 400 meters in 1967.

Evening is still coming as Tommie Smith sits on a wooden bench and looks over the Santa Monica College track, his young charges heading off for the day while the football team continues to work out. He gives them all a long look, smiles a peaceful smile. "None of these kids know who I am," Smith said. "They don't have the slightest idea. To them I'm just 'coach'." In the late afternoon, John Carlos is trying to talk on the phone from Palm Springs High, but he has to keep barking out instructions to students. Carlos, too, found few knew who he was when he arrived on campus. "When I came here 17 years ago, they didn't particularly know," Carlos said. "A few years later a textbook came out and they happened to see my picture and name in the history book."

Amman, Jordan May 12, 2004 – In a stunning upset victory, the Iraq national football team defeated Saudi Arabia tonight 3 to1 to earn a trip to the 2004 Olympic Summer games in Athens. “This means Iraq is on the right path,” said Hawar Mulla Mohammed through tears moments after the game. He had scored the team’s go-ahead, and eventually winning, goal of the game. “Our entire country deserves this incredible win. When the bus pulled into the stadium tonight we refused to think of anything but winning and now we are headed to Athens,” concluded the soon to be Olympian.
“The Iraqi team played a great match tonight,” said National Olympic Committee of Iraq President Ahmed Al-Samarrai “Simply stated this is the biggest moment in Iraqi Olympic history.”
