    London 2012 Chairman Barbara Cassani has hailed the new Wembley stadium as a "world-class venue . . .  that shows what we can do in this country." The so-called Venue of Legends - location of the 1948 London Olympics - is a part of Olympic history and a link between the past and the future, she added. Speaking on a visit to see the progress of the on-time and on-budget construction, she said: " Wembley is a name that is known the world over. "It has a very famous past with its footballing history and is also part of Olympic history as the centrepiece of the 1948 Games, and so has a special place in the Olympic Movement. "Wembley links the past with the future. It will give the London bid for 2012 a tremendous resonance. "It is a glamorous state-of-the-art showpiece and will provide us with an instantly recognisable brand. It is very exciting to see the stadium take shape. It is awesome.

    Latest: Tuesday September 19, 2000 04:58 PM U.S. soccer head coach Clive Charles (left) directs his team from the bench during the 3-1 win over Kuwait. AP MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - The weather was perfect for football. American football, that is. Maybe that's why the Americans were able to make history. On a chilly, rainy evening that felt nothing like a Summer Olympics, the U.S. men's team advanced out of the first round of an Olympic soccer tournament for the first time, beating Kuwait 3-1 Tuesday. Danny Califf scored in the 40th minute, Chris Albright in the 63rd and Landon Donovan in the 89th as the Americans dominated their Middle East opponents, who no doubt were more used to sand and hot sun than the slippery, bone-chilling conditions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Substitute Bader Najem scored for Kuwait in the 83rd.

    Blackburn Olympic The Early Years. The Havelock Inn became the next headquarters for this progressive club around 1980 expanding to two teams both playing in the Blackburn Combination, the 1st team played in the 3rd Div while the reserve team started in the 5th division. This period was to be probably the most successful period in the clubs history, the club had always had a reputation for being well organised and in the early eighties attracted an enthusiastic manager by the name of Jimmy Roscoe. Jimmy knew many players from the local scene and brought them to The Olympic winning the 3rd division championship in his first season. I stated earlier that the 80s was an important time in the clubs history it was during this time that a young player Named David Lloyd joined the club, and in his own right would play a part in the History of this great club, for when Jack Barlow stood down as secretary after forty years service Dave became secrtary and has brought the club through many difficult periods but still keeping the old traditions at the club. Dave has now been Secretary for about ten years but is still as enthusiastic about the club as he was as was when he first came. Blackburn Olympic now have one team in the third division of the combination, as well as a team in the 1st Division of the Blackburn Rovers communnity league.

    , Olympic and professional athlete. Born in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), Thorpe was the son of a farmer of Irish and Sac and Fox Indian descent; his mother was part French and part Potawatomi Indian. The tribal name given him at birth was Wa-tho-huck, which meant Bright Path. In 1904, he was sent to the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. Glenn S. "Pop" Warner, the legendary coach at Carlisle, "discovered" Thorpe in 1907 when he saw him high-jump six feet in street clothing. Thorpe became a star on the Carlisle track team and in 1908, a promising substitute on the football team. Thorpe left Carlisle in 1909 to play baseball for two seasons in the newly formed East Carolina minor league. Unlike other "amateur" athletes who played in the league under aliases, Thorpe used his own name. After returning to Carlisle in 1911, he led the football team to an 11-1 record and was named to Walter Camp's All-American team. Thorpe's most notable achievement came at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm where he won two gold medals. He took four of the five track events in the Pentathlon and scored an astounding 8,412 points in winning the Decathlon, a score that was unsurpassed for fifteen years. King Gustav V of Sweden said to him, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world." Thorpe replied, "Thanks, King."

    The History Of English Football. The game of 'Association Football' undoubtedly originates in England. However the earliest records of man kicking something resembling a ball date back to the Chinese Han Dynasty, 2000 years ago. There are records of the ancient Greeks and Romans developing the pastime known as ‘Harpastum’, a curious mixture of association and rugby football. The Romans introduced this to Britain in the time of Julius Caesar. It was during the Middle Ages that the game took hold of the public with annual Shrovetide matches being played between neighbouring villages with teams of unlimited numbers. The ball was usually a pig’s bladder although on one infamous occasion in Chester the head of a dead Viking was used to celebrate a recent victory over the invaders. In the late 13 th century and early 14 th century street matches were so popular in London that traders called on King Edward ll to outlaw the game in the city. Thus on 13 th April 1314 the first ever football ban came into force. The ban proved quite ineffective despite the threat of prison. Kings Edward lll, Richard ll, Henry lV and James lll made subsequent attempts at bans, all with similar effectiveness. The only ban with any level of effectiveness was that imposed by Oliver Cromwell, the game briefly disappeared but reappeared with even greater popularity following the Restoration in 1660. The popularity of the game continued to soar in Elizabethan times ( picture left ) , the

    Staffer shows his Olympic glory from the past
    Elizabeth Grimsley
    News Reporter The 2000 Summer Olympics are well under way and the world watches the finest amateur athletes from across the globe compete for the gold medal and Olympic glory in Sydney, Australia. However, for George Woods, an academic adviser at SIUE, watching the games brings back memories of his own days as an Olympic athlete. "To watch rekindles some of that old fire," Woods said. "I would love to be out there competing again. You can hardly watch the Olympic Games and not wish you were back out there." Woods first attended the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 where he received the silver medal as a shot-putter. He also received the silver in the 1972 games in Munich, Germany, and attended the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada, but finished out of medal contention. For Woods, success as a shot-putter stemmed from a high school football career. "Back when I was in high school, football was the sport to play, but the coach wanted us to go out for a spring sport to keep in shape," Woods said. Woods said he chose track and field because a tackle on the football team he admired held records in the shot put, the discus and weight lifting. By his junior year in high school, Woods had broken those records and began to realize he had some talent.

    History 7 - Olympic Stars Turned Pro In the early 1920s, many Olympic champions and medal winners tried their hand at professional wrestling, bringing the amateur and the pro sports closer together once again. The promoters were interested in packing the arenas and making money, not in real wrestling contests. In a desperate attempt to bring back the crowds of the Gotch era, they introduced pre-arranged matches that would include fancy maneuvers that were impossible to do in real matches. From that point on, double crosses and working matches were common in pro wrestling. The new emphasis was on entertainment, not competitive matches. However, there would still continue to be shoots for several more decades (more on that later). Some top amateur wrestlers decided they wanted a crack at the money, too. Among the Olympians trying the pro sport were:
    • Dr. Fred Myers of Chicago won four national AAU titles and placed third in the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium, at 176-plus pounds; Nat Pendleton was a native of Iowa who learned to wrestle from a Farmer Burns mail order course. He was unbeaten during his college career at Columbia University in New York, won four national AAU titles and captured a silver medal in the 1920 Olympics at 176-plus pounds; Robin Reed was a native of Portland, Oregon, who was one of the biggest amateur stars of all time. He never lost an amateur match any time, any place. He won four weight divisions at the Northwest Olympic Trials of 1924 and then breezed to a gold medal at 134 pounds at the Paris Olympics. He also won three national AAU titles;
