Olympic Soccer Football history:
Football - the world's most popular sport and one of the first to become professional, sits uneasily on the programme of a movement foundered on the amateur ethos. Consequently, the Olympic soccer tournament has suffered a traumatic history. In early times, the Olympic movement banned the participation of professional soccer players. Now this has all changed, the tournament does include professionals but is effectively the world under-23 world championships. The under-23 age limit does allow for three over age players.

The History of Football The History of Football The Greeks, for whom ball games were an essential party of life, played a form of football as early as 4 BC. The game was known as pheninda and involved kicking the ball, running with it and handling it. There are other examples of early versions of the game evolving elsewhere around the world. In Japan, records show that around the fifth century AD a game called Kemari, which involved eight players ceremonially kicking the ball back to one another across a ground 14 metres square. The evolution of the game in England appears to have its roots in holy days. Written evidence confirms that in the twelfth century a game with a ball was played on Shrove Tuesday in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. On such occasions the whole town would get involved and the game could last for days. The purpose of the game was to gain possession of the ball and deliver it back to the town or parish. In many other places, Shrovetide football lasted until the latter half of the nineteenth century. Throughout the centuries English monarchs tried to ban this version of the game but Edward II, III, Richard II, Henry V and Elizabeth I were all unsuccessful in preventing the continued interest. In the eighteenth century, the game was taken up by the public schools who, realising the importance of team sport, invented their own versions of the game. By 1848 the first serious attempts were being made by Cambridge University to set up a common set of laws. Fifteen years later, The Football Association was founded and Association Football, the game that is played around the world today, was born.

John Woodruff, Connellsville's Olympic Champion
By Jim Kriek John Woodruff leaned back in his chair, looked far away and back over the years for a second, then smiled, "I have often wondered just how far I really ran that day." "The Day" was August 4, 1936, in Berlin, Germany, when Woodruff pulled what was then called "the most daring move ever seen on track" to win the 800-meters Gold Medal in the Olympic Games, the last ones held before World War Two. The international competition would not resume until 1948 in London. But back on that hot August day in 1936, Woodruff had finished his freshman year at the University of Pittsburgh, and after a short visit to his home in Connellsville, PA, had sailed to Berlin. As he reflected on that day, Woodruff also had to be remembering his early days in Connellsville, and how he came within a couple moves of perhaps not finishing high school, let alone competing in the Olympics.

Within 34 years, Nigerian sportsmen and women have entrenched Nigeria's name firmly on the map of great sporting nations. Though, the country is yet to win a gold medal in the Olympics, the country is known to possess great athletes and that it is a matter of time before the country gets to the optimum in the global fiesta. Sports began to take serious roots in the country in 1963 when the National Sports Commission (NSC) began to function under Abraham Ordia as secretary. The 60's was a period of laying foundations and the only visible achievement was the qualification of Nigeria's Green Eagles for the Olympic games held in Mexico in 1968.

    SOCCER 101
WORLD SOCCER HISTORY World Soccer History Timeline The origin of football can be found in every corner of geography and history. The Italians, Chinese, Japanese, Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, Toltecs, Native American Indians, Persians, Central Americans, Scottish Clans, Vikings and Assyrians played a ball game long before our era. Later, the Roman harpastum, using a bull's bladder, reached the shores of the Atlantic when the legions conquered Gaul. This game led the way to soule, considered together with the Florentine calcio which emerged during the Renaissance, as the real ancestor of football. Football and handball games reach back to the first steps of the human race. Over thousands of years, ancient communities introduced rules to their elementary play of kicking and throwing. Games also embellished religious or tribal festivals. The Chinese played "football" games at least 3000 years ago. It is suspected strongly that the shadowy Celtic nations of Europe and the Vikings had rather nasty football ceremonies. In South and Central America a game called "Tlatchi" once flourished. The Ancient Greeks and the Romans used football games to sharpen warriors for battle. Roman games such as Harpastum or Paganica, which all had elements of kicking or running with the ball, spread Europe-wide with their empire's armies. Traditional football games played throughout Europe in centuries past are still being staged in modern times, especially in the British Isles. They usually include an element of mob battles and chases over countryside and through water. Undertones of ancient Celtic pagan ceremonies as well
