ANCIENT ORIGINS BEAUTIFUL GAME A MINORITY SPORT AT THE GAMES
To the pleasure of all those sports that are thoroughly swamped by football year in, year out, the beautiful game's vast popularity beyond the Olympiad has not translated to popularity within it and many a match at the Olympic Games, though not the final, is played to audiences of several hundred. In Sydney there are, however, 1.6 million tickets on sale because of the size of football stadiums compared with the venues of other sports. If sold, they would make football the most watched sport. The introduction of a women's event at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, and the fact that the title was won by the US, helped to generate a little more interest but only the stars of World Cup football could really turn the spotlight on the game when it becomes the first sport to be played at Sydney. Football is the only sport at the Games that will played outside Sydney, with matches scheduled for Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne, as well as the host city.

Cameroon got their hands on gold at the Sydney Olympics The Olympic tournament was the forerunner to the World Cup.
Although it has undeniably been superceded by the World Cup, the Olympics can boast a rich history. Pele always said an African team would win the World Cup in the 20th century, but that prediction fell flat with the likes of Brazil, Argentina and Germany dominating the roll of honour. Conversely, at the Olympics, variety is the watchword of the winners' rostrum. Gold medals have gone to Europe, North America, South America and, most recently, Africa, with Nigeria and Cameroon winning titles at each of the last two tournaments. Along with water polo, football is the oldest team sport played at the Olympics having been introduced in 1900. And like water polo, Great Britain took gold at the inaugural event when they were represented by Upton Park FC.

History of FIFA The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in the rear of the headquarters of the Union Française de Sports Athlétiques in Paris on 21 May 1904. The foundation act was signed by the authorized representatives of the following Associations:
  • France - Union des Sociétés Françaises de Sports Athlétiques USFSA Belgium - Union Belge des Sociétés de Sports UBSSA Denmark - Dansk Boldspil Union DBU Netherlands - Nederlandsche Voetbal Bond NVB Spain - Madrid Football Club Sweden - Svenska Bollspells Förbundet SBF Switzerland - Association Suisse de Football ASF
FIFA gets its shape
The first FIFA Congress held two days later on 23 May 1904 elected Robert Guérin (FRA) as President. Victor E. Schneider (SUI) and Carl Anton Wilhelm Hirschmann (NED) were made Vice-Presidents. Louis Muhlinghaus (BEL) was appointed Secretary and Treasurer, with the assistance of Ludvig Sylow (DEN). These pioneers were faced with an immense task because FIFA only existed on paper so to speak. One had to give it shape, create Associations as true national representations and get hold of new members. In the first place, the English had to be convinced that their membership to this newly created organization was indispensable.

History
Team games involving kicking the ball with one’s feet have been played in various parts of the world for thousands of years. A sample of such games includes “Tsu Chu”, a Chinese game which was played in the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C., “Kemari” in Japan, which appeared 500-600 years later and is still played today, the ancient Greek game “Episkyros” and the Roman “Ηarpastum”. These games had a pronounced ceremonial and symbolic character. In most cases the ball was the symbol of the sun whose “capture” would guarantee land fertility and good crops. Football, however, was mostly developed in England.  From the 8th to the 19th century it had a local character and the rules varied from place to place. At the end of the 19th century, sailors of the English navy introduced Football to the four corners of the earth. The year 1863 marks the beginning in the modern history of Football: the British Football Federation was established. Eight years later, the federation counted 50 club-members. The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFΑ) was founded in Paris in May 1904. The seven founding members were France, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands,  Sweden and Switzerland. As Football’s worldwide popularity increased, the number of FIFA country-members followed. Today, FIFA counts 204 members.
