Hurdle plays, the flying wedge caused formation of the NCAA The early days of football in the U.S. were so violent that players were killed playing the game. In 1905, the college season resulted in 18 deaths and 149 serious injuries. Little wonder. There was no forward pass, no neutral zone between teams, and no limit to how many players could be on the line at once. "Hurdle" plays allowed teams to pick up their ball carriers and launch them over the opposing lines. Mass-momentum plays such as the "flying wedge" of players advanced the ball but frequently caused serious injuries. And there were few limits on what linemen could do to opposing players. Personal protection equipment was virtually nonexistent. There were no helmets, mouthpieces or face guards, and body pads in use at the time were ineffective. The game might have been banned had it not been for President Theodore Roosevelt. A Harvard man, former student athlete, and avid football fan, Roosevelt called representatives of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton to the White House. His message was clear: Reform the game or it would be outlawed, possibly by his own executive order. The universities embraced reform and promoted it.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Monday, January 6, 1997 Kathryn M. Reith Director of Public Information COLLEGE FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE NEAR RECORD IN 1996
OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS-NCAA college football attendance in 1996 rocketed to the second-best figure in history, mostly due to a continuing growth in the number of Division I-A football fans. Home-game attendance totals for 1996 were just short of the all-time best figure in 1994, which exceeded 36 million for the only time in college football history. This season's total for all 566 NCAA teams was 35,997,631 up 359,847 from 1995 but short of the all-time mark of 36,459,896 in 1994. The Division I-A total of 26,535,520 was the second best since the beginning of attendance compilations. Home-game attendance in Division I-A accounted for nearly 74 percent of the 1996 NCAA national totals. Division I-AA was the only one of the four NCAA football divisions showing a decrease from 1995 attendance. With the recent addition of many nonscholarship programs in I-AA, attendance went down for the second straight year. Division I-A recorded the biggest increase at 699,051 in 1996. Division II increased 54,449 and Division III was up 11,643 from last year. Division I-AA dropped 405,296 from its 1995 figure to 5,255,033, the lowest in the division since 1992.

Description
"In March [1892] Stanford and California had played the first college football game on the Pacific Coast in San Francisco . . . The pregame activities included a noisy parade down streets bedecked with school colors. Tickets sold so fast that the Stanford student manager, future president Herbert Hoover, and his California counterpart, could not keep count of the gold and silver coins. When they finally totaled up the proceeds, they found that the revenues amounted to $30,000a fair haul for a game that had to be temporarily postponed because no one had thought to bring a ball!"from College Football: History, Spectacle, Controversy, Chapter Three In this comprehensive history of America's popular pastime, John Sayle Watterson shows how college football in more than one hundred years has evolved from a simple game played by college students into a lucrative, semiprofessional enterprise. With a historian's grasp of the context and a novelist's eye for the telling detail, Watterson presents a compelling portrait rich in anecdotes, colorful personalities, and troubling patterns. He tells how the infamous Yale-Princeton "fiasco" of 1881, in which Yale forced a 0-0 tie in a championship game by retaining possession of the ball for the entire game, eventually led to the first-down rule that would begin to transform Americanized rugby into American football. He describes the kicks and punches, gouged eyes, broken collarbones, and flagrant rule violations that nearly led to the sport's demise (including such excesses as a Yale player who wore a uniform soaked in blood from a slaughterhouse). And he explains the reforms of 1910, which gave official approval to a radical new tactic traditionalists were sure would doom the game as they knew itthe forward pass.

Guess where football originally came from? Thought it over? There is so much football history that we can’t even begin to write about it all.
http://library.thinkquest.org/6386/history.htm
Guess where football originally came from? Thought it over? Well, guess what? It originally came from the eastern United States. Now you may be thinking,"When did football start? And was it always played like it is today?" Well, let's find out...
Football Beginnings
Football began to develop in the 1800s. Football was originally a combination of soccer and rugby. In 1874, the first game resembling present-day football was played. The game was between Harvard and McGill College. As we said, at this time, they played football like soccer and rugby. Harvard wanted to play the game like soccer, and McGill wanted to play the game like rugby. So you can see there was a lot of confusion. They decided to play two games. One game was played like rugby and the other game was played like soccer. After the two games, Harvard agreed that McGill's way (like rugby) was better. They liked it so much that they decided to introduce the sport to other Eastern colleges. And that was how college football began. The first NFL (National Football League) game was played on August 31, 1895 between a team from Latrobe, PA and a team from Jeannette. Jeannette lost 12-0. It wasn't really until the 1950s though that the NFL earned its popularity.

Colorado College Football's History
A STORIED PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
Colorado College football officially was born on Christmas Day, 1882, when a small group of fans gathered on the sidelines of an improvised field near campus to watch the team's first game ever against an outside opponent. Those few fans in attendance had plenty to celebrate as CC defeated a group of local volunteer firemen, the Sigafus Hose Company, by a score of 10-8.
Football, however, was not a well-known sport in 1882. Just six years earlier, in 1876, Harvard and Yale staged the first intercollegiate game in history, playing under modified rugby rules in Cambridge, Mass. Only a few eastern colleges adopted the sport in the next few years, but it caught on quickly at CC. In February of 1882, the men students organized the Colorado College Athletic Association and elected officers to govern and regulate three sports under their its jurisdiction: baseball, track and football.
A little more than three years later, in the spring of 1885, the CC Athletic Association responded to a challenge from the University of Denver by scheduling a game early on April 11. A severe windstorm that morning forced postponement of the game until the afternoon, when a large crowd turned out at Colorado Springs Athletic Park to see CC claim a 12-0 victory. The contest lasted an hour and a half, and was the first intercollegiate football game played west of the Mississippi River.

History of Football at Alfred University 1896 A.U. Football Team College football is a game of tradition. The NCAA keeps records as far back as 1889 when Amos Alonzo Stagg was an All-American at Yale. Even though the game has changed considerably since Stagg’s day, tradition has remained its cornerstone. In 1995 Alfred University honored one of its finest traditions by celebrating the 100 th anniversary of its first football team. AU competed with 199 other Division III schools for the honor of playing for the national championship. The title game? It’s named after Stagg. Times may have changed, but tradition has remained constant. “It’s important for the students at AU to have a football program,” Saxons athletic director and former head coach Jim Moretti said. “There’s nothing like a cool, crisp fall Saturday afternoon on Merrill Field. The game inspires pride and is an opportunity for all students on campus to learn about teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship.” Those noble qualities were what inspired a group of AU students to form the school’s first team in the fall of 1895. The Alfred “eleven” as the team was known then played three games against local teams from Wellsville and Bradford, losing all three to the bigger and rougher players on those squads. W.F.Goodwin Thatcher, a student enrolled at the University in 1895, recalled the origins of AU’s first team in a 1951 letter. Thatcher admitted he was too small to play, but claimed to have knowledge of the game from watching his cousin Wellington Lee, a player on the town team from Hornell, and passed along the rudiments of the game to the eager AU players. The first practice was held without equipment or even a football. When some of the older students got involved equipment was acquired from a mail-order house.

Central football history wrapped in its own book STEUBENVILLE - Like family, high school sports is all about tradition, and Catholic Central is all about family and tradition. The Crusaders football team is one of the most storied programs at the high school, and now thanks to one of the school's graduates and lifelong supporters, fans of the Blue-and-Gold have a chance to relive that history year by year. Cicone's first piece concerning the football program was published for the school's golden anniversary. The new book has 152 pages, and is chalked full of stats and achievements for individual players and the team as a whole including a listing of all of Catholic Central's opponents and the Crusaders' record against them as well as little tidbits and sidebars. Those interested in purchasing a book are asked to call Cicone at (740) 283-4507, or he can be reached by email at Cicone39@yahoo.com.
