Wednesday, August 3, 2005 Pac-10 Football: History USC's toughest opponent By TED MILLER
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER LOS ANGELES Talk about accolades, trophies, national titles and all the rest, but you know you've arrived when your coach pinches your butt. That's what happened yesterday as USC quarterback Matt Leinart walked to the podium at Pac-10 media day with Pete Carroll. Perhaps Carroll just wanted to make sure one last time that the past two seasons weren't a dream. Unfortunately for the rest of the conference, neither of the Masters of the College Football Universe woke up. For the second consecutive year and second time in history Pac-10 media reached unanimity in the preseason poll. Any guess which team inspired such certainty?

1984 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP The Cougars were named No. 1 by the Associated Press, the United Press International, Sports Illustrated, CNN-USA Today, and the Football Writers of America. They won the Grantland Rice Trophy and the MacArthur Bowl. LaVell Edwards was selected as the NCAA National Coach of the Year and was invited to visit President Ronald Reagan in the White House. The dream season featured plays like wide receiver Adam Haysbert’s deep touchdown catch at third-ranked Pittsburgh, safety Kyle Morrell’s timed leap over the center on a goal-line stand at Hawaii, tight end David Mill’s catch with a clouded eye against Wyoming and running back Kelly Smith’s winning TD catch against Michigan, who had been ranked second earlier in the season. With a TV blimp in the sky over Jack Murphy Stadium, junior quarterback Robbie Bosco left the Holiday Bowl in the second quarter with an ankle injury and returned taped to play shotgun late in the second quar-ter. The 24-17 victory over Michigan was the first time a No. 1 team played in a non-New Year’s Day bowl. Other injuries throughout the season were to offensive lineman Craig Garrick and circus-catching wide receiver Glen Kozlowski, who came through time and again. The Cougars ascended to the number one spot on Nov. 17 following a 24-14 victory at Utah combined with a Nebraska loss to Oklahoma and a Navy upset over unbeaten and then second-ranked South Carolina.

Cincinnati Pro Football History
In 1937, a team known as the Cincinnati Bengals was formed as a member of the American Football League. The 1937 Bengals finished with a 2-4-2 record in their first year, but the AFL folded after the season. The Bengals continued as an independent team in 1938, and in 1939 joined a new AFL, finishing in second place with a 6-2 record. But again, the league folded after the season. Once again in 1940, another new AFL emerged, and again the Bengals joined. But that AFL suffered the fate of the two AFLs before it, folding after the 1941 season as the United States entered World World II, and the Bengals folded along with it. Pro football returned to Cincinnati 26 years later in 1967 when Paul Brown headed an ownership group that landed an expansion franchise in the modern-era American Football League. Brown, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who founded and coached the Cleveland Browns from 1946-62, picked the name Bengals for the new team "to give it a link with past professional football in Cincinnati."

Has football always been this confusing? In a nutshell, yes. Soccer, Rugby and More
In 1623, football resurfaced (legally) in England as a soccer-type game played on a field rather than in the town streets. Players were not allowed to touch the ball with anything except their feet. At about the same time, Irish teams took up a form of football that allowed players to hit the ball with their fists. One of the biggest changes in the game happened at Rugby College in 1823. According to legend, William Ellis suddenly stopped kicking the ball, picked it up and ran down the field and across the goal line. Sure, Ellis had broken one of the fundamental rules of the game, but the crowd loved it. Rugby College recognized that Ellis had a good idea and began allowing players to run with ball. This was the official beginning of rugby and the catalyst for what we know today as football.

History Of The RNFA

Where did it all start? Well it is of interest to note that the sailor of the Royal Navy in the 19th Century was playing his game of football under rules and conditions drawn up to suit the occasion as well as for the physical benefit, so were other institutions. It is also true to say that whilst the game played by these various institutions had some commonalties, each set about the game in their own way and did their own thing. Therefore, on the 26th October 1863 the Football Association was formed. It was not until 1907, some 44 years later that the Royal Navy Football Association (RNFA) became an affiliated member, with a representative serving on its General Council.
The Birth of the Royal Navy Football Association took place on the 13th January 1904 in the offices of The Southern Daily Mail when a group of Royal Navy officers met and agreed that an Association be formed for the Guidance and Government of Naval Football.
On the 9th February 1904 a second meeting was held at The Southern Daily Mail where the general Council was formed. Also at this meeting resolutions were passed inviting His Majesty The King, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and The Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to become Patrons of the Association. Additionally that The First Sea Lord should be President and all Commanders-in-Chief and Senior Officers of Squadrons should be Vice Presidents. (With the exception of one or two years, The Association has enjoyed Royal Patronage ever since). This was the last time a meeting was held at the Offices of The Southern Daily Mail, to mark the occasion and to acknowledge the friendship between the 2 organisations, the management of the Southern Daily Mail presented to the Royal Navy Football Association its first trophy – the Navy Cup.

TICKETS SCHEDULE STADIUM ... TEAM HISTORY Minnesota Golden Gophers - History Early Minnesota Traditions
Beginnings
Minnesota football history was made on Sept. 29, 1882, when Minnesota played Hamline at the Col. King State Fairgrounds, near Riverside and Franklin in South Minneapolis. These two teams, along with Carleton, were to take part in a “Field Day” at the Fairgrounds. Carleton failed to show up, and Hamline nearly left, but Minnesota team captain A.J. Baldwin talked Hamline into staying and playing what would be the first football game in U of M history. Baldwin scored the first points of the game to lead the Gophers to a 4-0 win.
Alfred Pillsbury, one of Minnesota’s first star players, played for eight seasons.
Alfred Pillsbury
Alfred Pillsbury was one of the founders of football at Minnesota. In the early days, there were no governing bodies regulating collegiate eligibility, so Pillsbury played at Minnesota for eight seasons, from 1885-92. His greatest contribution may have been changing the team’s style of play from the soccer style to the rugby style. He accomplished this mainly because he owned the only rugby ball in town!
The First Championship
Minnesota recorded an undefeated season in 1892, playing future Big Ten opponents Michigan and Northwestern that season. That year the team won its first-ever conference title, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the Northwest.
