A History of the Irish National Team

Flag football in Ireland

History of the game in Ireland It was an advertisement in Ireland's national press that heralded the arrival of the Irish American Football Association in the Autumn of 1984. Sixty-five players attended a first training session in Phoenix Park, and in January 1985 the first American Football team in Ireland was formed - the Dublin Celts. The Celts would become, over the next few years, Ireland's dominant team. In October of 1985, the Celts played their first competitive match, as they to play the Bristol Bombers. They won the game with a 32-0 shutout. In February 1986, they returned to England to beat the Wirral Wolves 14-0, and the March they defeated the Newcastle Senators 16-14 (in England again). 1987 was to become the first official league season in Irish history. 11 teams reformed their own organisation to form the Irish American Football League. The Celts then went through the first IAFL unbeaten, and clinched the first Irish title with victory against Craigavon Cowboys in the final. Victory for the Celts gained themselves entry to the prestigious EuroBowl competition in 1988, that was to be held in England. To qualify they had to travel to Vienna to take on the Austrian champions, the Graz Giants. Unfortunately, the Celts lost 36-12. After retaining their title in 1988 (with a 34-6 victory against the Belfast Blitzers in Shamrock Bowl III), the Celts were back for another crack at European opposition in 1989. This time they would have to face the British champions, the Birmingham Bulls. The Bulls won 29-3.

Atari Football History
By Mike Albaugh, edited by us Several folks at Atari had wanted to do a football game for a while, by the time I got there. I believe Steve Bristow and Lyle Rains were the main promoters of the idea, however the technology was not quite up to it. With the move toward microprocessor-controlled games, it started looking possible. The problem of lots of moving objects remained. Early games used a dedicated circuit per object ( Indy 800 used a board per car), but soon various engineers came up with ways to share circuitry. An early success was Sprint , which shared the vertical positioning circuitry among four cars, and (historically interesting) shared a single RAM for the "playfield" and uProc RAM, using the 6502's synchronous memory access to "invisibly" access the RAM for video when the processor was not using it. This was later used to great advantage by the Apple ][, another story. Anyway, the folks at Cyan Engineering (Grass Valley) had designed a game named

The first 111 seasons of football at Virginia Tech
"It was not football and yet we had some fun ... suits were ordered, footballs of various descriptions bought and general enthusiasm prevailed." - The Bugle, Virginia Tech's Yearbook, describing the school's first football practices in 1892 Football at Virginia Tech officially kicked off on Oct. 21, 1892 when the school was known as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Its start, however, was slow. With VAMC President John McBryde's approval and support, an athletic association was organized in September 1891. The major efforts of this organization during its early years were concentrated on football. At the urging of a few interested students and faculty during the fall of 1891, a number of students assembled on campus to play pick-up games of the new sport. A year later, largely through the efforts of Professor W.E. Anderson, Professor E.A. Smyth and cadets H.B. Pratt and J.W. Stull, Tech's first football team was organized. Anderson played right tackle and served as the captain. Smyth was the "trainer" (or coach) and business manager. It was necessary for the organizers to go into the barracks every day and beg men to come out to play because those who were not placed on the first team one day would refuse to return the next.

A Glimpse of Harvard Football History
Formative Years:
Football as an organized sport at Harvard dates from the early 1870s, having had a robust, but abbreviated, tenure in the early 1800s with annual sophomore-freshman English rugby-style contests. Weary of the accompanying fights, the Faculty, banned the games between 1860 and 1872. Harvard resumed play on a club basis with loose "Boston rules" that permitted carrying, passing and holding. Yale, Princeton, Rutgers and Columbia invited Harvard to join an association for a soccer-type game, but Harvard declined. In 1874 it turned to McGill for its first game under intercollegiate rugby-type rules. By 1875 pressures mounted for a Harvard-Yale rivalry under new "Concessionary Rules". The first H-Y game was played in New Haven on November 13, 1874, with Harvard the victor. Yale won in 1876 and Harvard would not beat Yale again until 1890. Princeton and Columbia were added to the schedule in 1877 and organized football gained momentum. By 1890 Harvard had hired a head coach, instituted spring practice, and acquired an injury-causing tackling dummy.

Punting and Kicking Competitions The forerunner of American football may have been a game played by the ancient Greeks, called harpaston. In this game there was no limit to the number of players. The object was to move a ball across a goal line by kicking it, throwing it, or running with it. Classical literature contains detailed accounts of the game, including its rougher elements, such as ferocious tackling. Most modern versions of football originated in England, where a form of the game was known in the 12th century. In subsequent centuries football became so popular that various English monarchs, including Edward II and Henry VI, forbade the game because it took interest away from the military sport of archery. By the middle of the 19th century, football had split into two distinct entities. Still popular today, these two sports were soccer and rugby. American football evolved from these two sports. The sport called soccer in the United States is still known as football throughout much of the world. Knute Rockne As a player and team captain, Knute Rockne developed the forward pass, opening new areas of offense and helping popularize the game of football. As a coach, Rockne’s brilliant strategies and inspirational talks made him one of football’s most successful coaches ever.

History of Jamaica's Football Some of the records available indicates that football (soccer) was introduced in Jamaica towards the end of the 19th century and 1893 is listed as the year Jamaica formed it's first football club. Jamaica's first international appearance was against their Caribbean neighbors Haiti in 1925. They were invited to the French-speaking Caribbean island by Andre Chevalon, president of the then United Sporting Society and it was for a three-match series between the two countries. Jamaica won all three games by 1-0, 2-1 and 3-0. The following year Jamaica hosted their Haitians counterparts at Sabina Park and won by 6-0. The Haitians remained frequent opponents and it was not until 1932 that their run of defeats was broken with a 4-1 home win in Port-au-Prince.
