Safe recipes for children with food allergies. Finding something to feed your child after he has been diagnosed with food allergies can often be a daunting proposition for the overwhelmed parent.
Finding something to feed your child after he has been diagnosed with food allergies can often be a daunting proposition for the overwhelmed parent. These days, it appears that very few children are diagnosed early enough to be confined to a single allergen and if your child is like mine, it may actually seem like there is nothing “normal” for him to eat. Unless your child is anaphlyactic to a food, like peanuts or shellfish, it may actually be best for you to remove the allergens from his diet one by one. This reduces the inherent rebellion of taking away ALL his favourite foods at once and will also help to contain the withdrawal many children suffer when eliminating their identified allergic foods. Sometimes it is better to continue feeding one allergen while you eliminate another so that the child will be compliant with the dietary changes and can feel that he still has some control over his life. If, like my eldest son, your child were to be identified with allergies to gluten (the protein found in grains like wheat, rye, barley, spelt and kamut), bovine dairy products (cheese, milk, sour cream, butter and yoghurt), legumes (beans, peas and licorice and unfortunately including soy) it may be necessary for you to remove most of your child’s regular diet. We went cold turkey on all his identified allergens, and we somehow made it through that period, but recent studies have shown that it probably would have been easier on us, and on our son, if we had started by removing dairy or gluten products but not both.

Over the last 50-75 years, our eating habits have changed dramatically. Processed foods and chemical additives have upset our entire chemistry resulting in food allergies, sensitivities, even chronic disease. Most people are familiar with the kind that when you eat something you "break-out". It's estimated that up to 50% of Americans suffer from more subtle food allergies. More difficult to pinpoint, these allergies don't immediately make you puff up like a blowfish or break out in hives or a rash. Hidden food allergies affect your quality of life in more insidious ways; physically, emotionally and mentally. Dermatologic (Skin) Disorders of the Dog:
A Multipart Series Allergic and Non-Allergic Food Reactions Causing Skin Diseases Adverse reactions to food are difficult to differentiate from "atopy" in the dog because presenting symptoms are typically identical for both conditions. Additionally, although food reactions occur as a non-seasonal dermatitis, many instances of atopy will similarly demonstrate no seasonal pattern. One factor that may be helpful for differentiating these two conditions is the observation that many dogs with food reactions will demonstrate skin lesions localized to the ears only. Therefore, dogs with recurrent ear infection even in the presence of bacterial or yeast infections should be considered suspect for a primary adverse food reaction. On average, adverse food reactions account for up to 10% to 30% of hypersensitive conditions in the dog, and of these, 80% of dogs with adverse food reactions will have a concurrent condition of atopy (refer to the previous section for more information on atopy Cause.

What are food allergies?
Food allergies tend to be overdiagnosed, but about 5% of children have true allergic reactions to food. Your child may have a food allergy if he or she has any of the following allergic symptoms within 2 hours after eating certain foods:
  • lips, tongue, or mouth swelling diarrhea or vomiting hives itchy red skin (especially if a child already has eczema).
Some less common symptoms are:
  • sore throat or throat clearing nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, or sniffing (especially if a child has hay fever).
Rarely a child has a severe allergic reaction (called an "anaphylactic reaction") that may be life-threatening. Symptoms of such a reaction are a sudden difficulty breathing, sudden difficulty swallowing, weakness from a sudden fall in blood pressure (shock), or confused thinking.

HOW TO HELP YOUR DOG WITH FOOD ALLERGIES
B ecause every dog is unique, it's sometimes very difficult to determine what causes food-related allergies and what doesn't. Common pet food culprits include wheat, corn and soy. Various proteins also create their share of problems in certain dogs. I was shocked to learn that some dogs are allergic to chicken, while I know from first-hand experience that my Jack Russell Terrier Lucy used to be allergic to beef. Here's an approach worth trying if your dog is exessively itching and scratching. I f excessive itching and scratching are the problems, that may simply be the lack of Omega 3,6 and 9 fatty acids in your dog's diet that's making their skin and coat dry. Winter indoor heating may also be exacerbating the condition. Adding simple food additives to your dog's food may be the key without switching diets. Supplements like Mrs. Allen's Shed Stop Flaxseed Oil Royal Coat from Ark Naturals or are all viable solutions for supplementing your dog's diet with the needed Omegas that dog's and cats need to lubricate their skin and coats.

If it is a food or group of foods causing or aggravating your arthritis, it takes up to 5 days for the food(s) to completely pass through your body. After that, you can look to see if your health improves. Keep a diary recording what you eat and how you feel. Try a rare foods diet to test if you are allergic to some of the foods that you regularly eat. This means eating only foods that you eat less than once a week. The theory is you are most likely to develop allergies to foods you eat all the time and you are probably not allergic to foods you only eat once in awhile. For two weeks you must give up all foods you regularly eat. To identify these foods you have to identify every ingredient of all foods in your normal diet.

Food Allergies: When Food Becomes the Enemy
by Raymond Formanek Jr. Imagine what it would be like if eating a peanut butter sandwich or some shrimp, or drinking a tall glass of milk left you vomiting, gasping for breath, and furiously scratching a fresh crop of hives. For some people with food allergies, that's reality. A food allergy, or hypersensitivity, is an abnormal response to a food triggered by the immune system. While many people often have gas, bloating or another unpleasant reaction to something they eat, this is not an allergic response. Such a reaction is thought to not involve the immune system and is called "food intolerance." Only about 1.5 percent of adults and up to 6 percent of children younger than 3 years in the United Statesabout 4 million peoplehave a true food allergy, according to researchers who have examined the prevalence of food allergies. It's critical for people who have food allergies to identify them and to avoid foods that cause allergic reactions. Some foods can cause severe illness and, in some cases, a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) that can constrict airways in the lungs, severely lower blood pressure, and cause suffocation by the swelling of the tongue or throat. An estimated 150 Americans die each year from severe allergic reactions to food, says Hugh A. Sampson, M.D., director of the Elliot and Roslyn Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and a food allergy expert.

DOES YOUR DOG HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES?
If you knew the ingredients in commercial dog food you wouldn’t feed it to a dog, let alone your best friend.
West Highland White Terriers are known for having food allergies. I know most of the Westies on the block (it’s a big block) and most of them have some kind of stomach problem or skin allergies. I have two West Highland White Terriers. Spooky and Elle. Elle is one year old, strong and naturally healthy but Spooky has had problems since he was a small puppy. With vomiting, diarrhea and blood in his stools I visited different vets every few months. Dog food allergies
Food Allergies?
After $1200.00 dollars in examination, x-rays and drugs, they all told me that it was probably a food allergy because they couldn’t find anything wrong in the blood work or examination. They sent me home with a special diet of “Duck and potatoes”, “Venison and potatoes” and finally “Salmon and potatoes”. Nothing worked so they switched me to a hypoallergenic dog food at an exorbitant price. Still my Spooky-boy would loose his appetite, refuse to eat and vomit bile.
I was frantic so I finally went to see a vet in San Mateo who told me Spooky had Colitis along with food allergies. We kept him on the anti-allergy formula but added bran to his diet. He improved and started eating more, gained weight and looked happier. Westies with food allergies like these are all too common. We hope we can give you some hints on how to keep your Westie or any other dog with food allergies in tip top form.

A Guide to Suspected Food Allergy by Dr Adrian Morris Up to 15% of the population report having had adverse food reactions. The true prevalence of food allergy is lower and seems to range from 1% to 4% of the general population and about 6% of the paediatric population, but does occur in as much as 25% of children with eczema. Consequently the general public perceive that food-related allergy is under-diagnosed, whilst most doctors feel that it is over-diagnosed. Many individuals have themselves noted that they are prone to develop adverse reactions to a specific food. They have then dealt with the problem by simply avoiding that food without ever seeking the advice of a doctor. Four types of Adverse reactions to food occur: Food Reactions modulated by the Immune System, these involve immediate hypersensitivity (IgE) and delayed T-cell mediated responses (non-IgE). These reactions may occur to minute amounts of the offending food in the diet. They depend on the bowel surface integrity and the individual’s ability to mount an abnormal immune response. This is true FOOD ALLERGY and accounts for 20% of all adverse reactions to food.

Definitions and Causes
Food allergy is often mistaken for food intolerance. It is important to note that allergy is only one of a number of possible reasons for food intolerance. Food intolerance can be defined as a condition where particular adverse effects occur after eating a particular food or food ingredient. Genuine food intolerance is different from psychologically based food aversion, where a person strongly dislikes a food and believes that a food produces a particular reaction. A genuine food allergy is when a specific immune reaction occurs in the body in response to consuming a particular food. Allergies often run in families, and people who are allergic to some foods may also be allergic to other environmental factors, such as house dust, animal fur and pollen. A true allergic response involves an altered or abnormal tissue reaction to an antigen. An antigen can be a protein, a substance bound to a protein, a food additive or less commonly, a polysaccharide. The antigen combines with an antibody and produces an immune response, which results in cell damage and the release of histamine. The immune system plays an essential role in our bodies in protecting us from the invasion of harmful substances. An allergy occurs when the mechanism operates inappropriately in response to a harmless substance such as a particular food protein.
