Catalog Please Read ELIMINATION DIET TO DETECT AND RELIEVE HIDDEN FOOD ALLERGIESAND TO REDUCE STRESS ON THE IMMUNE SYSTEM by Elmer M. Cranton, M.D Click here to download as Adobe Acrobat file This diet is used in two ways: To help with a diagnosis of suspected food allergies: Adhere strictly to this diet for at least a month and observe whether any symptoms of illness, skin rash, fatigue, congestion, digestive tract problems, joint pain, discomfort, etc., improve at the end of that time. Suspect foods and beverages that were eliminated. These can then be added back one at a time, as described below, to confirm a diagnosis of food allergy. This process may need to be repeated if in doubt, and it is sometimes necessary to remain on the diet for more than a month to obtain greater relief of symptoms. A daily diary of symptoms and potentially allergic exposures is helpful. Keep in mind that food allergies are most often of the delayed type, persisting for some time after the allergic substance has been eliminated and recurring only after repeated daily exposures, once symptoms have improved. To relieve stress on the immune system: By reducing stress on the immune system for a period of several months, tolerance to previously offending foods and beverages often disappear. This period of rest can give the immune system time to recover its tolerance to some, if not all, previously reactive foods. Previously bothersome foods may once again be tolerated in moderation, especially when not consumed frequently. With this goal in mind, the diet can be followed strictly for three months. Yeast in the body, mainly in the colon, also stress the immune system and increase the severity of food allergies and chemical sensitivity. If yeast are eliminated with anti-fungal medication, previously allergic foods can often be better tolerated. Fixed allergies to gluten containing grains (such as wheat) and dairy products is common, however, and reactions to those foods may persist throughout life, fluctuating in sensitivity from time to time. Viral infections and other illnesses can reactivate food allergies.

Breastfeeding mothers warned about food allergies
From staff and wire reports ATLANTA, Georgia People with food allergies and nursing mothers with a history of asthma or eczema may need to be more cautious about the foods they consume. A Canadian study of 23 healthy women found that nursing mothers may pass peanut proteins in breast milk to their infants. Such early exposure to the allergen could put babies at risk for developing a potentially fatal peanut allergy. Eight foods are known to cause 90 percent of severe food allergies: Peanuts Eggs Milk and milk by products Wheat Tree nuts Soy Fish Shellfish Source: U.S. Food and Drug Administration A recent Food and Drug Administration study also found that many food manufacturers fail to list highly allergenic ingredients such as peanuts, eggs and milk that are in their products. The study involved 85 manufacturers of baked goods, candy and ice cream, in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The FDA asked state inspectors to sample egg and peanut ingredients nationwide, following an increase in food recalls for failure to list food allergens.

Food Allergy and Additive Intolerance. An Overview for Health workers by Dr Adrian Morris Food Allergy has always been a bit of a Cinderella Science often the topic of Media Fads and Fringe Medicine . It is falsely perceived to be the domain of controversial alternative medical practitioners and as a result is generally frowned upon by mainstream academic medicine. However, there can be some very serious and life threatening consequences of food allergy. Consider the dire results of Fish and Peanut Anaphylaxis. At our Allergy Clinic s at the Guildford Nuffield Hospital and at the London Medical Centre, of our referrals are for suspected food allergy . Patients are very aware of the symptoms of food allergy, which can be quite alarming. The prospect of a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction is always a major public concern. Patients may present with urticaria that they attribute to food allergy. An increasingly common food allergic presentation are oral symptoms such as itching and swelling of the mouth and throat obstruction with respiratory difficulties. Successful testing for allergy can be very difficult without a clear history implicating a particular food. The tests we have available are often not 100% specific. We see both false negative and false positive skin and blood tests and then fresh food challenge testing may be necessary.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Food Allergies: How Diet Could Be Effecting Your Symptoms
    by Melissa F. Thompson
    ImmuneSupport.com
Do you suffer from migraine headaches, confusion, hay fever, airborne allergies, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome or sinusitis? All of these problems are common with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). But, did you know that each of these symptoms could be caused or made worse by food allergies or sensitivities? Many people have food sensitivities or food allergies, and CFS patients often have food reactions as part of the symptoms of the disease. Classic food allergies are rare, but food sensitivities are very common. Similar to the malfunction of the immune system in CFS, food sensitivities are also caused by an over-production of cytokines. Cytokines help to kill foreign invaders, such as viruses. However, cytokines can also be produced when reactive foods are mistaken by the immune system for foreign invaders, resulting in severe fatigue. Food reactions can cause many symptoms that are similar to those experienced by people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.(1) These symptoms include joint pain, chronic pain, cognitive disorders, digestive disorders, acne, depression and anxiety. To determine whether these symptoms are a part of a larger disease, like CFS, or due to reactive foods, a medical blood test or an elimination diet can be performed. There are many physicians that specialize in food allergies and sensitivities, and they feel that doing a combination of both most often provides the most accurate test results.

WHAT ARE FOOD ALLERGIES?
ALLERGY TERMS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Allergy. The term "allergy" comes from two Greek words, alos (other) and argon (action). If you are allergic to something, you have a reaction other than what you would expect. You don't expect to get hives when you eat a red tomato. That kind of a reaction would be an allergy. An allergy may manifest itself in various target organs, meaning sites where allergy signs occur. These are usually one or more of four places: the skin, the intestines, the respiratory passages, and the brain, i.e., (behavior changes). Intolerance. The term food intolerance means that a food upsets your intestines, yet does not bother any other target organ. Food intolerances are usually due to an enzyme deficiency, (such as lactase deficiency), which causes lactose intolerance. Or, the intestines may be oversensitive to certain foods, resulting in abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and bloating. Intolerance is usually a reaction to the protein content of a food, yet you could be intolerant to any part of the food, including sugar and/or additives. Food hypersensitivity.
