Folk dancing on the WWW
Final Update: 1996 December 24 I started this before there were large WWW indices like Yahoo or search engines like Altavista back when there was nobody making a profit by offering such services. Now they do a much better job than I can. I leave this page as a testament to the way things were. As of the end of 1996 there will be no further updates to this list. The links can be expected to erode as sites move around. When I find a point with dance info on the WWW, I put it here. I do this more out of personal curiosity than as a public service. Thanks to William Watson (watson@mpd.tandem.com) this list has been organized geographically. This has long been the most-often hit page on the UCO/Lick server; I don't know who stuck it into Yahoo.

Rupert Brooke, The Soldier England may be a tiny rain-sodden speck off the coast of Northern Europe but she has a unique cultural tradition. The concept of England as a multicultural society is nothing new. We have been one since the Romans came, and it is this very cultural diversity that gives us such a rich and varied heritage. English culture is a living tradition and successive generations of English folk have been proud to embrace their cultural heritage. Such quintessentially English sights as Morris Dancers performing outside a village pub on long summer evenings are testament to this. Many organizations are preserving the past, our goal is to preserve the present. We have embarked on an ongoing project to record as much contemporary English Folk Dance music as possible, to make it as widely available as we can, and to promote the dance-forms wherever the opportunity arises.

This site contains information on Greek folk music, Greek dance, and related folklore. I will be adding and changing information on a fairly regular basis, as the site is always "under construction." I have produced some recordings of Traditional Folk Music for many of the regional Greek folk dances and will list them here along with some information on the dances and songs. I also have dance descriptions available for the Greek dances that I have learned and researched over the years. Feel free to drop in and see what is new. Here is a brief rundown of what's currently available here. All of these sections are accessible through the nav bar to the left.

The Turkish Folk Dance Group at UF has been participating in festivals and celebrations throughout Florida for years. They have been dancing in front of large audiences and introducing Turkish folk dancing to those who have not been exposed to the culture of Turkey before. The names of the dancers in the group continuously change as graduating students leave town and new students replace them. The experienced help the newc omer s master the moves and in doing so assure the continuation of a tradition here at UF.Turkish folk dances and folk music create one of our traditions which, for centuries, was the most effective means of national feelings and culture. As a geographical, historical and cultural phenomenon, our folk dances and our music work, emerging in a variety of forms and of very rich character in different regions, are considered to be a cultural treasure. The number of our folk dances performed and folk songs sung reaches almost ten thousand that are observed in weddings, gatherings, festivals, friendship meetings, association meetings, seymenlik (performance of young men armed in national costume who take part in a wedding procession/festivals) ceremonies, various seasonal recreations, holidays and in many other traditional activities. It is necessary to regard the Turkish folk music and folk dances always as a whole completing each other. Including a many small kinds, our main folk dances are Bar's (performed in East Anatolia), Halay's (in Anatolia), Zeybek's (on the Aegean coast), Hora's (cyclic dance), Horon's (round dance) and Samah's (folk dance of villager Alevis or Mevlevi dervish dance).

      • Men's Dances ("Kartzilamas") : Men dance in pairs across from each other. These very lively dances demonstrate the virility and agility of the Cypriot men.
      • Women's Dances ("Kartzilamas"): Women dance in pairs to demonstrate their humility and grace. The movements of the dances show the Cypriot woman's needle work abilities.
      • Datsia: A dance performed in social gatherings and weddings. It demonstrates the agility of the dancer - a man - as well as his skill to balance glasses filled with wine centrifugally turned in a circular sieve.
      • Sickle Dance: A dance also performed in social gatherings and weddings by a man. He uses the sickle, which is very sharp, to show off his swiftness in harvesting.
