Dance Music Events Photos ... Home Welcome to the Exeter University Folk Society! Spring Term Programme now on the Events page! View/Sign the Guestbook Great, you made the first step in the right direction and you found our homepage! Now you are curious and want to know what this is all about? This is all about folk music and dancing and having lots of fun! We meet up once a week on Monday nights for all sorts of dancing: some traditional English, Irish and Scottish dances (the stuff you dance at ceilidhs or "barn dances" in plain English) as well as all sorts of International folk dances. During the year we will dance around the world! In Fresher's week we usually hold a Ceilidh with a local band playing live music. This is a great way to have a try it out and to start the academic year... We also go to some ceilidhs in and around Exeter, but the absolute highlight is the IVFDF (pronounced "ifffdifff"). The Inter-Varsity Folk Dance Festival is a weekend packed with folk music and dancing, with ceilidhs, workshops, shows,... Each year it is hosted by a different University. Exeter hosted IVFDF '95 and '99 with great success, and we will host it again in 2004! This year we went all the way up to Sheffield and it was definitely worth every single mile! Now we are all getting ready to welcome to the event to Exeter next February! These weekends are great fun and you usually don't get much sleep at all. Check out our photo page for the evidence! If you play an instrument why don't you join in for some folk music? We meet on Monday nights before the dancing and just enjoy playing together. You don't need to be an expert. All levels are welcome! The same applies to the dancing: Beginners are welcome, no experience is necessary and you don't need to bring a partner. And if you know some dances please show us! We are always keen to try out some new stuff. Membership is only £2.50 per term which works out as 25p per week. A real bargain! The dancing then is free. Only if we have "specials" (like live bands or external instructors) we might charge something extra to cover the costs. Non-members pay £1 per session. For details of how to become a member ask any committee member or send us an email. You can join any time. Just come along on Monday night!

State Folk Dance, Square Dancing In 1994, the Utah State Legislature designated Square Dancing to be the state folk dance of Utah (Utah Code) . The Utah Code states "...square dancing means the folk dance which is called, cued, or prompted to the dancers, and includes squares, rounds, clogging, contra, line, and heritage dances." The Mormon Pioneers loved to dance and they participated in wholesome entertainment to escape the rigors of the harsh frontier life. Andrew Love Neff, in his book History of Utah 1847-1869 , says "The Mormons love dancing... almost every third man is a fiddler, and every one must learn to dance. In the winter of 1854-1855, there were dancing schools in almost every one of the nineteen school houses, and necessarily so much more attention to dancing involved so much less attention to study." He went on to say "Let it be remembered that only square dances were indulged in, that the gatherings were opened and closed with prayer, and that preachments were often interspersed with dancing, a happy combination of religion with pleasure and enjoyment..." The early British traveler, Richard Burton, noted that everyone danced including The Prophet, the Apostles, the Bishops which lent a highly cultural value and worth, and of course it did bring young women and young men together in a social setting which might result eventually in marriage.
